In terms of scifi, it doesn't get much better than Vernor Vinge. The Peace War is one of his very early works, and showcases a lot of the elements that his later books would adopt: a wise old engineer, a society that has destroyed itself with its own technology, a benevolent dictatorship, and of course, the triumph of capitalism and freedom over that dictatorship (no matter how benevolent it may have been).

The Peace War is not as polished as Vinge's later books nor is the technology as interesting (the killer tech in this book is a "bauble" that freezes time inside). But Vinge's intellect is still in full display, and as always, the battle in Vinge's mind between personal freedom and the advantages of a peaceful, repressed society under the thumb of a dictatorship is fascinating.

If you are a technologist with libertarian leanings, you should read ALL of Vinge's books, including this one.
