Adrian Fenty (Washington, D.C.) 2007-Present 3

Adrian Fenty was just thirty-six years old when he began his term as mayor, and he brought a lot of enthusiasm to the position. Unlike his predecessor, Anthony Williams, Fenty was able to personally connect with the citizens of DC. However, Fenty's image has changed somewhat since he was elected. He has been a somewhat authoritarian mayor, best illustrated by his takeover of control of the DC school system. This was not part of the platform he ran on, but it was one of the first things he did in office. His selection of Michelle Rhee as Chancellor of DC Public Schools has been met with criticism by some, but is applauded by more conservative educational critics. Their combined overhaul of the DC school system has been dramatic, and this appears to be where Fenty will try to earn his legacy. Time will be needed in order to tell how successful Fenty will be as Mayor of Washington.
