Closest of course is not always best, particularly if you're in Phoenix in July. SHADE becomes the big qualifier, yet most places here offer none. Bastards...

To me the best parking spot is the one on the far edge of the lot where my car is least likely to get doored. Shade - on the rare occasions when there is some - is an additional bonus.

. . . because looking for the closest parking spot at the mall makes so much sense when you're going to be walking around for at least half an hour IN the mall . . .

Never understood this one. I cannot count how many times over the years I have watched people drive around endlessly, looking for that close spot. I am usually already in the store before they park. Nothing like good ol fashioned stupidity.

As long as my legs work do not need that space up front.  why waste time and gas.
