Only Bob Dole could select Jack Kemp in an attempt to swing the youth vote.

This ticket looked like an AARP convention.

Always popular with the press and enthusiastic, Kemp was a decent pick. I doubt if he helped any, but he also probably didn't hurt any.

When the press and observers would ask Senator Robert Dole who would be his pick for Veep in 1996, Dole would characteristically say he wanted a '10'. When he chose Jack Kemp, he told the press corp that he had picked a '15' (in allusion to Kemp's Buffalo Bill's jersey number). '15' or not, it was not meant to be as Dole-Kemp were overwhelmed by incumbent President Bill Clinton and his Vice-President Al Gore. Along with subpar performances during debates against the Democratic ticket, including a drubbing on one by Gore over Kemp, Dole-Kemp were soundly defeated in the electoral college. At the end, though both Dole and Kemp were highly intelligent and well-spoken of, the Clinton-Gore team were the beneficiaries of a peacetime economy and stable international relations, and no ticket headed by Dole would have made any difference in 1996 with what the eventual outcome turned out to be.
