Old Lloyd was one of the bigger hypocrits. He hated John Kennedy's guts and ran a vicious smear campaign against him for the benefit of fellow Texan Lyndon Johnson in 1960. He did deliver the phony putdown of Quayle with panache, almost like he meant it. You have to credit him with acting skills. Ted Kennedy went out of his way to give as much support to his friend Quayle as was politically possible as a Democrat. He and the family hadn't forgotten Lloyd's hatchet man turn in 1960.

While Bentsen was a great geographical choice and was able to outsmart Dan Quayle ( I'm impressed!), I don't recall any groundswell of support to elect him president.

Excellent choice, giving a strong ticket balance and providing one of the great debate moments of the last 30 years (when Bentsen told Quayle that he was "no Jack Kennedy) The downside was that Bentsen looked infinitely more appealing than Dukakis in the top spot on the ticket.
