Mondale had been Carter's VP and was well known to Americans.  The choice of Geraldine, for all its historical significance, was controversial, even among democrats,  as there was a sort of heir-apparent, I think Shirley Chisolm, who had received a nomination for president from a 3rd party, and believed SHE should receive such a historic honor.  Anyway, Mondale, it turns out was not fit to carry Reagan's shoes and was drubbed soundly, sending the historic platform to a crushing and embarrassing defeat.
