A good man who was not a politician. I think he would have made a better president than some others who have been picked.
Also, he didn't sink Perot. Perot sank himself with a paranoid outburst just before the election which CBS reported. I don't remember the details right now but I know that it made Perot look like he had a few screws loose.

I remember him looking quite shell-shocked during the 'debates'. . .

Laughable choice. Stockdale appeared to be unable to pour piss out of a boot with the instructions written on the heel. Not that Perot had a hope in hell, but it made his attempt a total joke.

This was a very sad situation. Stockdale was a great American and he might well have been a good vp. He, however, was not a good campaigner, and wasn't comfortable on television. The line for which he is remembered (Who am I? What am I doing here?) was meant to be an answer to the question most people were asking. Instead, because of his bad delivery of this line, it made him seem lost, confused, and perhaps senile. There are a whole bunch of people who have made worse verbal gaffes still out there "leading" us.

I was young during this election, but I knew then that Stockdale wasn't a good selection. The man seemed lost and confused during the Vice Presidential debates, and helped people to remember Perot's candidacy as a joke.

Wasn't Stockdale the guy who said during the debate, "who am I, and why am I here?" Poor guy, he actually wasn't bad, a POW during the Vietnam War, he had some expertise on national security issues He ran only as a favor to Perot and only on a temporary basis initially until Perot could find someone else to fill in the VP slot. However due to ballot requirements in some states, Perot couldn't change his runningmate at the last minute, so Stockdale was stuck. Stockdale simply wasn't ready to run. He didn't even have a chance to prepare for the debates, nor was he ready for the rigors of campaigning. He simply didn't do too well, and many speculated at the time that Stockdale's weak performance might have cost Perot about 5 percentage points in the polls. He didn't lose the election for Perot, but he would have done much better with a stronger VP. A stronger peformance from Perot might have actually given the election to the elder Bush.

For a brief moment, people forget Perot actually led in the polls but things like picking Stockdale put an end to that quickly. I will give them credit for being entertaining though lol

Prior to the 1992 Presidential election, I thought H. Ross Perot was a rather bright man and an articulate salesman who could sell a ketchup popsicle to a blind man lacking taste buds. But if there was ever a moment where a presidential candidate probably wanted to turn back time and possibly take another running mate, it might have been Perot who picked a good, but clearly-overwhelmed man in James Stockdale, a respected and highly decorated U.S. Naval officer and a former prisoner of war in Vietnam. Even today, Stockdale's infamous retort, "Who am I? Why am I here?" makes political observers and historians cringe before bellowing in laughter, and all but destroyed the third party movement in presidential elections as a threat as Stockdale basically stumbled his way throughout the 1992 Presidential election cycle. It also made the once-serious Perot bid for the Presidency a recurring joke on late night talk shows, of which by 1996, Perot still had not fully recovered from (if ever).
