Humphrey was one of the better choices. He lacked charisma, but was a strong advocate for the liberal positions, especially civil rights.

Lyndon Johnson picked Triple H as the proper geographical and ideological choice. This brought Humphrey to the national stage and doomed his aspirations at the same time.

A very good choice, given the politics of the day, both within the Democratic party and in the general electorate. That being said, Johnson could probably have picked a wino off the street and beaten Goldwater that year.
