As Bentsen was preparing for the debate, staffers brought up this point Quayle might use. Bentsen was outraged at the suggestion of Quayle comparing himself to Kennedy, long a revered, democrat icon. Bentsen was ready for the question and the response, as were the partisans in the crowd. Quayle walked, enthusiastically, into the trap. Not that it helped Dukakis & Bentsen who were about to lose in a historic landslide. But it came in handy four years later when Clinton/Gore ran and knew how to use every advantage.

Perhaps the most memorable sound byte from a presidential election debate. This is the political equivalent of Vince Carter dunking on Fredric Weiss at the 2000 Olympics.
