I have no recollection who this VP selection was, but I read a biography of Smith about 14 years ago, and I remember, in the main, admiring the guy... it's a good thing this isn't 1928, because both the rednecks and the hipper than thou's on the site would be going apeshit making anti- Smith weblists right now.
