Wheeler was an isolationist Democratic Senator from Montana who was anti-draft, anti-war, and anti-big business.  He certainly seems to have been a Democratic version of LaFollete on the big issues and so was a very good choice for this sort of protest candidancy.  I think he probably would have been a poor choice for president in later years, though, when world politics simply could not be brushed aside.
