 | Astromike (27) 09/05/2008 | This was and remains the worst of the worst as far as hurricanes to hit the U.S.
Most residents of Galveston at the time paid little attention to the category 4 storm just before it made land fall. By the time residents started realizing the hurricane's force it was too late. Also a lack of technology of course played a part in the high casualty numbers. The entire city of Galveston was destroyed. A few years later a "sea wall" was built along the coast to raise the city, and help prevent such a disaster again. Since then Galveston has been hit with several hurricanes, but the residents learned their lesson from the 1900 hurricane.
The Galveston TX Hurricane of 1900 is to date the deadliest natural disaster ever to strike the United States. The number most cited in reports as far as casualties is 8,000.
By contrast, Hurricane Katrina, claimed the lives of approximately 1,800 people.
