A long time favorite hoax of mine, this 1982 alleged purchase of a couple of small Connecticut weeklies by TASS, the official Soviet news organ, featured a story by John Reed in which it was revealed that the two former publishers had died in simutaneous hunting accidents after shooting each other in the back of the head with AK-47s. Like all great hoaxes, it had more than its share of believers, some of whom no doubt harbor doubts about the two paper's loyalty to America to this very day.

Here I love "Simultaneous hunting accidents" in which they had shot each other in the back of the head with "standard-issue Soviet Army rifles." most of all. It would be even more believable if this hoax would be produced earlier, in 50-ths or 60-ths, when the USA fear from Russians would be more severe. Like this new joke on Yahoo Answers, when some lady published a question: "I leave in Georgia, USA. I read that there are Russian tanks invasion. I see non. Where are they now?" She got multiple responses, and not all are really adequate :)
