 | cautious (0) 03/03/2006 | I own a Sony DCR, but work has a CCD that I have used, so I will repeat my review here.
I liked the camera until it broke. Sony and some of the places that sell them are now in a scam against consumers in the US.
Sony does not authorize anyone to service camcorders (you cannot find an authroized sony service center other than mailing it to Sony). However, Sony will fix whatever it is for $300+ dollars.
What you can buy is a service agreement for $250+. Re-sellers such as Best Buy will actually fix them, but ONLY if you purchased it from them with a service agreement, otherwise it is $300+ to send it to Sony.
It is a scam, clean and simple.
My company will never buy another Sony product again until they change the practice and authorize local service. I would recommend you do the same.
Even if you purchase one from Sony, do me a favor and ask for a list of locally authorized serice centers before agreeing to the puthace.

 | Mark Boyden (0) 05/07/2002 | !!!!! WARNING - DANGER WILL ROBINSON !!!!!
Beware of this camera. Even Sony does not believe in the reliability of this camera only giving it a 90-day warranty for labor (the most expensive part). They give a 1-year parts warranty, but mostly it's only labor that is needed. The parts are usually only a few dollars if even needed.
I bought the camera in late 2001 and less than six months later, when I pulled it out to record my baby's first steps (the major reason we bought the camera was to record my daughter's milestones), it fails. And then they tell me that I have to pay $166.71 to have it fixed.
Sony's gone downhill my friends, and I'd suggest that you look at other manufacturers.
This camera was well-rated and feature rich, but if you have to pay $500 only to pay 1/3 of that again every six months, then you start looking elsewhere.
-----
Amount Paid (US$): 500.00
Ease of Use: Good; all features are easy to learn and apply
Durability: Poor; may get beat up; it will last a year
Battery Life: Average; lasts 45-90 minutes
Movie Quality: Excellent; professional quality

 | Lavender slug (0) 01/23/2001 | This camcorder is small and light which makes it easy to carry to all candid camera moments. You can flip the screen out and around and replay the moment to an audience right after it was recorded. There are features such as backlight and night shot which allow for the best picture at any given time.

 | PERW8981om (0) 07/24/2000 | I love these camcorders. Fast auto focus, long battery life, and low light level are great features. If I were to upgrade, I will go to the Sony Digital version.
