I don't know that "most painful bad songs" is the proper place to rate this moment in the chronology of the decline of western civilization. That such a unqualified lame lark could not only capture but hold onto the national attention for as long as it did says a lot about the current state of a culture that once built things like the Cathedral at Chartres and wrote the Hallelujah Chorus to last the ages.
