I LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE Mary Kay!!! I don't know what others are talking about when they say the colors aren't up to par or are made for "old ladies." I'm 20 and have found perfect shades for summer, work, and night out on the town! Maybe the consultant you used wasn't the greatest, or you aren't very good at picking your own colors. Either way, I've never had any problems and my personal consultant is the best!

Like with anything else, you often get what you pay for. Of all the Mary Kay products, I must say, I am most impressed with their lipsticks and lip glosses. The color doesn't fade or bleed like a lot of drugstore and discount stuff. Even though I'm a big fan of L'Oreal and Revlon, I have to admit, most of their lip glosses don't contain enough pigment. This only disappoints and frustrates me as I don't want just a completely sheer shot of gloss. Sometimes I want something more than a hint of color, too. And Mary Kay's gloss isn't sticky either like a lot of cheaper stuff. Like another reviewer said, it's convenient to sample the products before committing to buying them. However, if you shop at Walgreens or Wal-mart, they're pretty good about allowing a return even if you sampled the make-up. In fact, the cosmetics dept. clerk at Walgreens even tells me that I can always return it if the color isn't right. It's just such a hassle to drive back and return stuff. Usually, I end up keeping it and then never using it. Despite the higher cost of Mary Kay products, I still recommend them. Even compared to the department stores, Mary Kay is still not as expensive. You won't ever have to pay $20 for a tube of gloss.

I am not a huge lipstick person (I tend to be more of a gloss person), but I do like what I've tried enough to buy a couple of colors. I am very pleased with them and have to disagree with those who say the quality is no different than drug store brands. I used to be addicted to going to Osco/Sav-On Drug store and try new lipsticks and such from Revlon, Almay, Cover Girl, Maybelline, etc. Mostly I ended up returning them (workers always rolled their eyes and sometimes tried to say that since I already tried it I couldn't return it). So I spent about 15 minutes driving to the nearest store, 15 minutes trying to imagine what the colors would look like on, 5 minutes in line, 15 minutes getting home, a couple of shots at trying to convince myself I liked it, deciding I didn't like it, and the horrible hassle of going through similar steps to try and return it. I like the idea of not feeling obligated to keep something I don't like. I also don't like that lip color never really looks the same on as it does in the package. Trying before I buy has become a must for me and I can either pay extremely steep prices at Departments stores where they are sometimes rude and pushy. Or, I can just call my Mary Kay lady and she will bring an entire collection of samples I can try right to my house. Bottom line-great lipstick, great value, great color selection.

Lipstick lasts all day. Love to be able to sample a color before I buy it (saves money in the long run). Even stayed on after eating a meal.

Not worth the price. I would rather just go to Wal-greens and get a tube of Revlon. I guess my big beef with Mary-Kay is that my friends who have started selling it have turned into annoying phonies who only want to push their junk on me. Mary kay is overrated and just the same as most Maybelline and Revlon products.

i haven't been able to find a good shade, and all of them are too shiny.

I have tried and tried to get RIA to add a section on cosmetic companies alone - opposed to individual products - because for a long time now I have wanted to pick a bone with this company. So far, no luck, so I guess I'll just have to send my little public service vent out here. I've used several of their products over the years - including the lipstick - so I will begin by saying that quality-wise the lipstick, as well as the other products I have used, are no better or worse than anything you might buy from Revlon, Almay, Cover Girl, Max Factor or any other popular cosmetic line that you can pick up on any given day at your local Target. But quality is not the issue with Mary Kay and myself. No, I don't really care for the home shopping invite your friends over and put them on the spot marketing routine either. It galls me even further to realize that this "party" method of shopping is only peddled to and by women. However, my real problem with this pink and ruffle-fussy little company came about when I bought several items from a distributor a few years back. I was told what a wonderful deal it was to be able to purchase the makeup cases separately because when I ran out of something I would then be able to just buy a refill, pop the old one out and the new one in (the line is cast and hits the water). And these marvelous cases, though sold separately, are such high quality they will last indefinitely (the fish bites and swallows). Well, for all the good this did me, they might as well have slapped them together using tinfoil and rubber bands because guess what happened when I actually needed to replace something? I found that those clever Mary Kay folks had decided to redesign not only the style of the case, but also the shape of the inserts (fish is now scaled, cleaned and in the frying pan)! Which, of course, meant that I would now be forced to toss out my collection of "fabulous cases" and start over. Could this be more transparently obvious? So, I don't care if their lipstick is made from spun gold and lasts for 100 years, because, as far as I'm concerned, the Mary Kay Company can throw one big party and all sit around and eat their over-priced products.

I'd have to agee with the colors just not up to par for these day and times. They don't seem to go on very easily and don't stay long. I cannot find a color that works for me in this line.

Great for African American women. There are many shades to chose from.

Great lipstick, good colors, seasonal changes makes it impossible to get favorites at times. On the high value side.

I don't really like Mary Kay lipsticks. They don't last very long and really are not moisturizing for your lips. They cost too much for the quality of the product. Plus, you can only get it from a representative.
Chucho 01/10/2001
Mary Kay lipsticks are pretty good. The colors tend to lighten up in color when you apply them to your lips. The color stays on for long periods of time. Mary Kay is expensive, but you get your own personal beauty consultant. Sometimes the consultant doesn't have the product on hand so you have to wait for it.

Not only do they not test on animals but their lipsticks stay on for a long time and feel soft on the lips.

They cost too much. Old women colors. They don't last long on your lips. When you take off the lipstick it makes your lips chapped. They leave a strange tint on your lips. It is not worth the $10 you spend for it. The colors they offer don't look good on dark complextions.

I've been a Mary Kay user for years and I think they have good quality products but I don't think their make-up offers enough variety in colors. Their lipstick stays on well. It is good quality but they need to add more colors that follow the fashion trends. More, more, more!

Good "classic" colors, but not enough "now" colors. By far the best coverage that lasts the longest. Smells okay. My second favorite lipstick.
