HTC Dream / HTC G1 3

This is an "okay" phone. The touch screen is great except it locks the dial pad on calls, so if you need to press a # for an extension or to enter your password to check voice mail or something, you have to double tap it to unlock it, OR sometimes it totally closes. This is a pain in the arse if you are checking voicemail and you want to save or delete a message and you are driving. Just looking down to have to unlock the keypad and then see/press the 9 or 7 is not good to have to do... not so bad if it was ALL you had to do, but the added step of having to unlock the keypad or bring it back up is totally idiotic. I do not have time to listen to vpicemail except when I am in my car and have a little down/driving time and peace o be able to do so. If I want to press 8 to call the person who left me the voicemail of press ## to return to voicemail, again, I have to unlock or bring the dial pad back up to do so. It is really a huge inconvenience. The "Android" system is great though. I like the GPS and mapping and I like being able to do google searches and check my e-mail and stuff.

The swivel out keyboard is a nice feature for typing long-worded text or email messages, BUT it is bulky and it is a heavy phone AND I hate my keyboard... I got one of the first G1's and I hope they no longer even have this keyboard, but mine is light colored and the letters blend in with the pad so you can SEE the letters/#'s if it is lit up in a light setting. I HAVE TO LOOK to type! (yeah, pitiful, but I do) so it is a struggle to see. Most of the time my on screen keyboard will not work. I have contacted T-Mobile and motorola requesting a different phone, but I cannot get them to work with me unless I PAY for a new one. This phone was not cheap and I cannot afford that, so I am stuck with it.

HTC Dream / HTC G1 5

I just want to say that this is a wonderful and great mobile phone. The phone is a touch screen based phone. The phone also uses the open source operating system "Android". The OS is a Linux based OS. This phone is a must for any one who loves to get their hands "dirty" with programming. This phone also uses T-Mobile USA's 3G network. If you live or work in a T-Mobile USA 3G network covered area you must get this phone. This phone does have one major drawback. This phone puts ALL current T-Mobile USA phones to shame. Well except for Blackberries. You are still limited to how many email and txt messages you can store on the phone before the phone starts acting sluggish. I also love the swivel out screen that was once exclusive to the Sidekicks. The keyboard is great for typing long-worded txt or email messages. I have yet to meet someone who returned their phone just because they "did not like it". T-Mobile USA and Google really out did themselves on this phone.

HTC Dream / HTC G1 5

Just got this toy 2 days ago.

[For iPhone fans] I just want to mentioned upfront - I never owned iPhone as well as never really had a chance to play with it for longer than couple minutes, so for me it would be hard to compare those two.

My previous phone was Motorola Razr v3, so getting G1 after Razr it feels like purchasing Porsche after owning an Yugo.

Well, now about device itself.

It is pretty nice and it feels that Google engineers spent enough time thinking it through. I find the functionality to be VERY intuitive so far except music player, which I still did not figure out how to shut down.

It is awesome that G1  has the actual keyboard - makes typing very quick. I like a lot "draw a pattern" instead of letter-numerical  password.

"Mouse" - on G1 is super helpful while browsing Internet and makes it much easier to click on links instead of using touch screen.

I think you can expect from G1 everything you would expect from modern cellphone - PDA plus some nice extras.

As a conclusion I should say, I expected G1 to be more of a toy than something really useful, but it turned out to be the other way.

On my way to work this morning - I replied to my emails and read a technical article with lots of graphics, and I felt pretty comfortable the way G1 let me do that.
