A class act who didn't let fame destroy him. He loved his wife and set an example of what true love is. He helped others and kept a down to earth style even after starring in many well known and well remembered films and he left being a legend and will be remembered fondly.

I really enjoyed Paul Newman as a pool shark in 'The Hustler.'  As a teenager, I worked in one of the hockey arenas where 'Slap Shot' was filmed, which was cool (for a little while at least).  Also, Newman's Own Balsamic Dressing kicks major ass.

I was having breakfast at Denny's when a couple of old bags in the next booth started talking about Paul Newman's death and how he was into health food and more. I can tell you I was shocked.

I have visited his tavern for about 40 years, Paul's place. I agree that he was into health food. Paul served the Newmanburger. He made these round burgers that were about the size of tennis balls. He had them cooking all day in a big castiron skillet along with lots of onions and other stuff. If you ordered a Newmanburger, he would slice off two large chunks of bread, plop a Newmanburger on one, put the other on the side. Then he would pile onions and whatever else he had in the skillet on top of the burger and pour a little grease on top of that. You could put the other slice of bread on top if you wanted. Ummm! This was all very healthy, let me say.

Well I walked into Paul's Place the other day and there he was in the flesh. He wasn't dead. I was shocked until I found out that he actually spelled his name as N-E-U-M-A-N.

For a while I thought the whole deal was false advertising!

this man was truly one of the great ones and not just as a star. he gave without fanfare and publicity and without the need to be patted on the back. he also managed to do what few other celebrities are able to accomplish and that was to stay married to the same woman , joanne woodward. i saw them both in an interview shortly before his death and you can see that they truly were soul mates.

I realized I took his career for granted and in a strange way always expected him to be there.  I can rattle off a few memorable films- loved "The Sting" / "The Hustler"/ "The Color of Money". . .and near the end of his career the underrated "Road to Perdition". . .Newman was graceful and modest- always mentioning good luck as the real reason behind his fame.  His aw-shucks attitude towards his fame always won me over.  And despite being a 'movie star' I can recall a few scenes when he did a decent job of acting.  I guess there are no real movie stars anymore. . .

Newman was an American icon who meant more to this country than just his acting. Of course he will live on through his film, but the Newman's Own brand which he founded will continue his charitable work although he has passed on. He was a great American who definitely left his mark on the world in his life, and will continue to do so.

A gifted actor and a generous human being. His movies have already been covered here so there is no point repeating them. He had a style all his own but in quality he was on par with the best of them, including Henry Fonda and Jimmy Stewart. He was slightly overshadowed in his earlier years by his contemporaries; James Dean and Marlon Brando but over time he proved himself to be the equall of both, maybe more so.

Paul Newman was one of the finest people in show business.  Even though he was a talented and convincing actor who had a long and productive career to consider, you really have to respect and admire the man for his very significant efforts at philanthropy.  His lemonade/salad dressing business has contributed about $250 million to various charities over the years.  This lefty pinko shelled out more money to the needy and disadvantaged than the Bush family, the Cheneys, the Reagans, the McCains, and every other GOP player on the political scene combined.   He was hardly greedy.  He walked the walk, and did so modestly.  In fact, he was somewhat shocked that the business did so well, and was also slightly embarrassed  when undue attention was brought to his charitable efforts.  He also had one of the most enduring marriages in Hollywood, and it was obvious that he and Ms. Woodward were truly committed to one another, not just going through the paces or putting up a false front.  And what was very decent about him was that he didn't get into all the hype and glittery self-importance nonsense of Tinseltown, preferring to live a quiet and private life with his family.  A truly great man.

He started off as a Brando clone; really good-looking, with those magnetic blue eyes, and what appeared to be at best only marginal talent. As an actor, though, he grew, and quickly outgrew that "Brando clone" label. During the 60's, he was a better than average actor-- not great, but he had the luck (or shrewdness) to appear in some very good movies that showed him off to best effect..."The Hustler", "Cool Hand Luke", "Cat On A Hot Tin Roof", "Hombre" (one of the 1960's best Westerns), etc. "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" wasn't a picture of great substance, but it had beautiful scenery, and Newman and Redford obviously had a lot of fun making it, and, if their performances didn't necessarily constitute great acting, they had the ability to draw the audience in and make them feel part of the "festivities" on screen and make them feel as if they were having as much fun watching the movie as Newman and Redford had acting in it. By the time he appeared in "The Verdict" he demonstrated once and for all that he was more than capable of turning in a superb acting performance when he wanted to. He didn't always want to, but in "The Verdict" he was excellent. Even when his movies weren't "excellent" they were generally absorbing and funny and moving, often demonstrations of the compassion and principles that Newman so obviously had. And, as others are mentioning, he was a great philanthropist, opening camps for cancer-stricken children and donating the profits from his food products to charity. He was a big, big actor, an even bigger man, and he will be sorely missed. R.I.P., Paul. You did good.

I'm not devastated (5) but I think Newman was a great actor and one that will be remembered not only for his talent but his philanthropy as well.

Fast Eddie Felson, Cool Hand Luke, Brick Pollitt, Frank Galvin, Joseph Reardon, Henry Gondorff, Reg Dunlop, Butch Cassidy....

Some of the finest characters in American cinema have lost their creator. A very fine actor, Newman made average movies good, and and good movies great.

And for those of you who don`t recognize the movies (The Hustler, Cool Hand Luke, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, The Verdict, The Mackintosh Man, The Sting, Slapshot, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.)
