05/01/2003 | The thing about Merengue is that there is not a lot of variations in it; not in the dance, not in the music itself. So it can get a little bit boring after a while. For at least a little while at a time, though, it can mean great fun (and relatively easy to learn) with your partner.

05/14/2001 | Merengue is the most fun to dance. The beat is fast, the footwork is easy, and you basically just find yourself whipping around and around with your partner - going faster and faster as the music speeds up. A Venezuelan friend of mine taught me how to dance Merengue when I was doing a semester in Caracas - every day after class we would go to her house and practice - and usually to the same sang, a "techno merengue" song called "otra noche sin tenerte" by Proyeto Uno. If you are an American who wants to experiment with Latin dancing, definitely start with Merengue - you'll find it much easier than Salsa.
