As Zuchinibut mentions, it was a little slower than your typical western, and I'm also not a big fan of Renee Zellweger, and would have preferred someone else in her role, but I still thought this was a really good movie. But then again, I just tend to like westerns, so take my four stars for what you will.

I wanted to like Appaloosa and had high expectations going in. However, it was really a boring movie. Westerns are supposed to be about gun fights, standoffs, and horse chases. Yes, Appaloosa had that, but all of those scenes were way too quick. Meanwhile, the scenes in which Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen's characters had elaborate conversations about seemingly nothing seemed to occur over and over again. Mortensen and Jeremy Irons had solid acting performances, and were the highlight of the movie to me. Harris was awful as was the usually annoying Renee Zellweger.
