He has a strangly odd, creepy, and hypnoti csounding voice, which is perfect for the song.

Decent song, but the covers by Creedence Clearwater Revival and Nina Simone are better that Screamin' Jay's original.

Screamin Jay Hawkins is not necessarily a novelty act but the guy is hillarious and actually semi-talented.  He has probably one of the best album names ever: 'Black Music for White People.'
