 | rnickell (0) 03/18/2008 | We have a 1993 Grand Cherokee Jeep which we purchased new and have had minimal problems over the years. Some idiot hit it just in front of the drivers door so the door pops when it opens but it still opens and closes. The Jeep has over 120,000 miles. We are trying to decide whether to repair or move on. Any thoughts.

 | Renee777 (0) 11/12/2007 | I have had a lot of problems with my Jeep Grand Cherokee, but I think it's more of my dealership taking advantage of me than the car. The car rides great until I need a service and have to take it to River Oaks Jeep in Houston. That's when my service tech starts quoting away (and ironically there's always a sales guy two steps behind him saying 'we can always put you in a new one'). Strange how it'll be driving like a dream until I need service from them. Inititally I thought this was just the nature of the car but then it got excessive. They are the only people beside NTB who have touched my car and after a while I noticed I always had problems. Now they're talking TRANSMISSION, so at this point I'm hot because I maintained the car well and did everything I could think to do. It's a 2002 and I've driven less than 12,000 miles a year, so it has low mileage. I know cars will have problems but I think there's more to it with mine. If I had time I'd explain all the shady things they've told me and how many mistakes they've made that I have now on record, but anyway... To get back to the point of the discussion I've had lots of problems with mine. I'm, of course, switching dealerships and my male friends will be taking it in for me (hate to play the weak woman role but if it'll save me money I'm going for it). This is the first car I've ever purchased because my father bought my previous one (a Honda that NEVER had a problem). My Cherokee is an '02 and I expected it to last at least 7 or 8 years, but I can't afford all the issues. I hate to do this to my country but Honda, Toyota and Nissan here I come!

I will never by this american made crap again!!!! DO NOT BUY JEEP!!!I only rated it one star because I had to-I would like to rate it NO stars.

 | JohnInKY (0) 05/05/2006 | I had a 1997 Jeep GC Limited with over 150k on it and it was a sweet ride. All the bells and whisles very confortable to drive and when it snowed it was a monster. Would still have it if it had not been for a ford escort hitting me in the rear at 45+ and making it to expencive to repair. I now have a 2000 Cherokee Classic and am quite happy with it. I will always own a Jeep for the safty and dependablity.

 | kaseycarr (0) 03/22/2006 | I don't agree with the person saying that they had so many problems with their Jeep. Several family members of mine have owned Jeep Cherokees and have han zero problems. The Cherokee is a great quality made SUV. Any car or SUV or any other vehicle could stay in optimal condition, just as long as the owner treats it well. By treatign it well, i mean checking tires, looking under the hood once in a while, washing and waxing it, and not treating it brutally (example- not sitting on it and keepin g it out of the sun and elements when parked for any amount of time). So, if one would liek t oenjoy a car for any length of time, treat it well!

 | 2little2late (0) 12/06/2005 | Always wanted a Jeep Cherokee. Finally got a High paying job and bought one. Wish I had bought something else. Don't get me wrong I love her but for the money i spent I shouldn't have no where near the problems I do. She's a 2004 and I have already had the front sway bushings replaced passenger window trim replaced, passengerwindow motor replace, passenger side mirror replaced. And an array of problems the dealership will not admit are there. I too have the loud noise when shifting from park to reverse or drive. When I turn the wheel there's a loud noise in the front tires. The handling sometimes scares me, feels like the rear end has lost control. Plus my CD player will just die for no reason, or the speakers won't work. I thought I was paying for quality but apparently I paid for a "logo". If you have an honest dealership to help you with the kinks maybe you'll be alright but mine is as crooked as a question mark so I have to show myself to get anything fixed. Good Luck!

 | boognb (0) 09/23/2005 | QUESTION - '97 Grand Cherokee Laredo - LOVE MY JEEP but have a question. My car has died on me while coasting to a stop or at a stop...not good for So. Cal. busy freeways - it sort of sputters and you have to hit the gas or it will die.
The dealership says it didn't do it for them, had it over night, and no failure codes have registered. Anybody have any thoughts?!

 | legrille05 (0) 09/12/2005 | I own a 97 Grand Cherokee Laredo and it has only given me 2 problems, 2 sensors I have to replace and I'm getting a short in the ignition, but other than that it has been a better choice than a Blazer or Explorer. It only has 132,000 mi and with proper care it should make it to 300, 000 without a problem. Any car can give u problems even new ones, Japanese suv's may be good but they can't tow a boat the same way an Explorer or a Grand Cherokee can. I will buy A 2000 or 2001 Grand Cherokee Limited V8 next year since they are great performers. If u want a worry free car I would advise a European make like Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, Volvo, or BMW because they are better performers than Japanese cars.

 | Evol-1 (0) 08/22/2005 | 1997 GCLaredo with just over 100k, Why are my door latches ripping free of the door? I find it a wee bit alarming that the metal used on the latch mechanism is too thin to stand up to the riggors of getting in and out of the vehicle. Thankfully another GC owner pointed this problem of the fasteners tearing through the sheet metal, but the solution he came up with was nothing short of welding the door shut. I am not as spry as I used to be, and I do like functioning doors on my vehicles, as I am not a Duke nor do I live in Hazzard. Now I am working on a template to reinforce the latch mount to diamond-plate steel, this must be glued in place as the metal is far too thin for any reliable weld to hold...skew you chrysler, I am not thrilled at all. Other than that one issue, if the reccomended maintenance is performed (mostly fluids and grease fitting) it will hold up quite nice to even my abuse, now if I could keep the damn drivers door latched all the time it would be a great truck for trail and highway...
Once the template is made and installed I will be more than happy to give away all my information and designs for the rest of the unfortunate Grand Cherokee owners...

 | Tesla's Revenge (0) 06/21/2005 | Sorry, folks... I've known about a dozen people who one of these. They all just seem to love them but constantly have a whole array of mechanical problems, shell out the big bucks, and still claim they're great. Several go ahead and buy another after the previous one just sent them down into a financial vortex of repair hell. The whole Jeep thing with some of these people just amazes me, considering that EVERY one had MANY problems.

 | bigmuny (0) 05/12/2005 | Purchased 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee..after about 12k my brakes started pulsating, Jeep said it was a warped rotor caused from running through water??? New Mexico is dry..duh..also about the same time I am noticing a loud sound coming from my transmission when I put it from park to either reverse or drive. The sound is hard to explain, but it wasn't there when I purchased the vehicle new..Jeep dealer says those are natural sounds???? Then why didn't those sounds exist when new?? Are they waiting until my warranty expires??? I had my rotors turned and the transmission is OK by them?? Anyone else have these noises from their transmission, if so, what is the cause??? Help..

 | fishman (0) 02/12/2005 | 97 Grand Ch.Laredo. Worst car I have ever owned. More maintenance than my previous Honda, Toyota and Mazdas combined. I'm on my 3rd water pump, 3rd CD player, 2nd radiator, rear bearings, plus multiple seals, gaskets guages. Front stabilizer bar went and almost caused a crash at 60mph with 2 kids aboard. The original was junk and apparently the parts are too. Wrote twice to Jeep with no response. Dealer was no help either. People with new Jeeps are taking a big chance.

 | beernut (0) 01/19/2005 | 2004 Grand Cherokee Laredo - have slightly over 11,000 miles on car, less than a year old - loud clunking sound from suspension and handling is sloppy- sister has same vehicle with same problem. Dealer says sway bar bushings are defective and are on back order because of several vehicles with the same problem - if defective bushings were used in assembly - why no recall?

 | JeepCrazy (0) 11/29/2004 | I am the original owner of a '98 Grand Cherokee Laredo. It ran great for the first 60,000 miles, but ironically, as soon as the warranty ran out, all hell broke loose. For starters, my doorlocks and dome lights started going on and off randomly while driving, then I went to get out of the drivers side and when I pulled the door handle, it cracked off in my hands, I have leaks in the oil system, and the transmission/transfer case. Now, the newest problem is, the electronics system, when I drive, all of the guages, the radio, power windows, doorlocks, etc. flicker on and off. I got the battery and alternator checked out and they are fine. I will never buy another Jeep vehichle, it seems they built their reputation on the great vehicles they built in the 80's but since then, they suck. In fact, I will never buy another American made car, American quality has got to be the worst in the business. My next purchase will be German or Japanese, where they still care about building a quality product.

1995 Grand Cherokee 145,000 miles.
Universals, water pump and fuel pump.
Great ride, radio & handling. If this
is all it takes, I'll buy another. The
fuel pump apparently is a factory problem due to the tank. It may help to
change the fuel filter every 10 or 20
thousand miles.

 | nettzspot (0) 08/26/2004 | I own a 1988 Jeep Laredo with over 200,000 miles and she still runs strong and was quite impressed that she had pleanty of power to pull a party barge boat (pontoon) anyway, I recently upgraded to a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee, Ltd, 5.2L V8, that also towed the same boat with no hesitation, all the bells and whistles that come with this vehicle are wonderful, everything works beautifully with the exception that my switch for my sunroof needs to be replaced. (your everyday wear and tear). I love my Jeep and would never own anything else. I am sorry for those who have managed to find the lemons, but please remember ALL manufacuters have lemons. I personally cannot wait to get my Jeep dirty! Good luck to those who are not having a good experience in finding a vehicle that they love as much as I love my Jeep!

 | Regina9698 (0) 08/25/2004 | I purchased my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo brand new about 4 months ago. I have had more problems out it than any other car before. 1st it was an improperly installed tie-rod end bushing. Then a defective shim kit. My suv is at the dealership now for the same reason it was last week as well. The passenger side speakers quit working and there is a rubbing noise coming from the steering wheel when I turn. The service in the Memphis Tennessee area is terrible. I dont not recommend anyone to ever buy a Jeep vehicle. I know I wont ever do it again. I am now in the process of trying to get rid of it so I can purchase a Toyota 4Runner.

 | tikibar (0) 08/09/2004 | I bought my '97 JGC Orvis Edition with 55K miles about 4 months ago. I've had a few minor repairs so far (new front brake pads, frozen handbrake, recharge the A/C), but nothing worth carping about. I love the color combination, the silver exterior with the tan/green interior is something that everyone comments on when they see it for the first time. Power from my 5.2L V8 is more than adequate, though gas mileage is between 14 city and 18 highway. (We leased a 1996 JGC Limited with the V8 from '96 to '99 that got 18-20 city and 24-26 highway... Scout's honor!) Interior space is more than enough for us, I love being able to haul anything from an antique desk to 12 bags of refuse on all-city dump day. The best part is that since our other car is a two-seat roadster, we finally have a vehicle to pick up friends from the airport, et cetera. Do yourself a favor, find a lightly-used (MUCH cheaper than new) Grand Cherokee and let the good times roll!

 | moccasin (0) 08/08/2004 | i have a 95 grand cherokee with 183,000 miles on it. i purchased it at about 125,000 miles after the transmission had been dealer replaced. after reading a lot about grand cherokees from people familiar with the product, i understand that it is not entirely unreasonable for the tranny to fail at over a hundred thousand (often when it is abused). i am in total agreement that the in line 6 motor is outstanding in its reliability, performance and fuel efficiency. i drive about 800 miles per week or more in often extreme desert heat conditions. this vehicle has performed remarkably in very harsh driving conditions. yes sometimes components fail, but this vehicle is entirely worth every penny i ever put in to it. one day i will happily replace the motor rather than buy an s.u.v. that is bloated in price, not broken in and probably would be a gas hog if it had any size at all. this is the absolute best vehicle i have ever owned and is the perfect size for carrying loads and using for a work vehicle. the outside tire rack is much much better than the full size spare inside for storage reasons. i have had an annoying problem with the lower radiator hose where it won't seal quite completely.. but it is fine when the temperature gets below 100. this vehicle has climbed hills with a full load (note: the overdrive off button is for hill climbing) in 115 degree temperatures and performed perfect.
a final note: drive easy on your vehicle, there is a lot of weight and mass and friction and pressure combining with environmental forces and bad driving habits that will destroy your vehicle and often quite soon. take care of it, it will take care of you.

 | GS3303 (0) 08/06/2004 | I have a 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited with Quadra-trac. It has been an excellent vehicle and I would not trade it for the world. Not only does it have more torque at idle than most at near redline, but it handles great. It also has amenities that most utes could only hope for. I have 18 miradas on in the summer and 16 all-terrains in the winter, tire wear is good. I think that you people just need to maintain your ride and all is well. Daimler- Chrysler makes the best vehicles and one fine day everone will relize it! Mopar Man until I die!

 | Weston (0) 06/25/2004 | Always wanted a Jeep. Saw a silver 1995
on a local used dealer lot with 100,000 miles. Did loads of internet research and Carfax. One owner. Garage kept and MOPAR maintained. Beautiful. Was aware of some of the problems but got the Laredo with Selec-Trac and straight 6 Cyl which is best combo. Regular maintenance should keep it running for very long time. 126,000 miles presently.
Had recent speaker wire break which I fixed. Small rear main seal leak. No big deal and common with Jeeps. Replaced neutral safety switch and oil sending unit. Inexpensive. 20+ mpg.
Key is good maintenance, using ONLY Chrysler ATF for transmission fluid changes. DO NOT use Dexron. Could damage transmission (book says use Chrysler fluid and only Dexron if absolutely necessary). USE CHRYSLER FLUID. Also, READ THE DRIVERS MANUAL.
These vehicles are fairly advanced and
sometimes things can happen which may seem wrong but are normal; such as the transmission locking out overdrive if fluid temp gets too hot. This saves the transmission but if you didn't know what the vehicle was doing, you could freak out and possibly get screwed by an unscrupulous mechanic.
Aftermarket sales are awesome for Jeeps with good prices and lots of excellent stock. Do your homework and maintain and you should get lots of enjoyment. Oh, almost forgot, nothing touches this thing for off road use.

I have 120000 miles on the 94' and 93000 on the 98. I have not had a major problem with either despite continued abuse. They out class and out accelerate all other sport utes on the road under $65K. | jojojeep (0) 02/08/2004 | I own two Jeep Grand CherokeeLaredo's.
1994 with 139,000 miles on it. My teenage daughter now drives it and it runs like a clock. NO major problems with it since the day I bought it new. The way it is running it likely will be around for another 139,000 miles.
1998 Grand Cherokee: runs great with 70,000 miles on it again no major problems since the day I bought it.
Both provide a smooth comfortable ride. When it is snowing the 4 wheel drive provides a confident driving expereince.
They look sharp. Tires last a long time and wear down evenly.
I will never stray from Jeep as long as they last and perform like these two have.

 | paride82 (0) 08/28/2003 | I own a 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo equipped with the tried and true 4.0L I6. As of now no serious problems with over 90,000 miles. There's no secret to making the engine last. This has been a staple to Jeep. If your looking for a reliable long lasting vehcile, a straight six Jeep should be at the top of your list. And unlike many suburbanite Jeep owners, I actually utilize Jeep and its heritage by taking it off road and when ever 4X4 is truly needed. It's a dream off road, good low end torque, and superb traction. If you have heard horror stories about Jeeps, it's most likely because of the V8 powertrain. The V8 powertrain is all Dodge-Not Jeep. AWD Jeeps always have issues both with their diffentials and weak Chryler transmissions. The 4.0L Straight Six is such a good proven powertrain, that Mercedes-Benz(Daimler Chrysler) is slowely fading them out. Too GREAT and Proven for such a car company that likes complicating simple things. Only In A Jeep.

 | BIGBABY (10) 06/30/2003 | Terrible. While the front is reasonably roomy, the rear bench is low to the floor and can sit two at most. Very bad problems, especially with the horrible engine and the electricity. Prices go for about an entry level Expedition, being way over priced. Cargo room small, but no useless. Get an Explorer- there not small, can hold 7 people, and dosen't have as nearly close to being as unreliable.

 | Kurt Keller (0) 06/14/2003 | I have a 1998 Jeep Laredo with 44K miles on it that just failed on the road due to a clogged fuel system.
My daughter and others were at risk since the car came to a halt on a main road and could not be moved off ot it. It had to be towed to the dealer. The repair cost was $725.00. I was told there was a growth in the tank and the fix was to replace the tank or have it flushed out with bleach which is what they did along with replacing the fuel pump. If it was a growth then the tank was made without the proper inhibitors in it to prevent this. In reading another review it may be a liner problem. Obviously we are not getting a straight answer on this from the manufacturer and they are aware of the problem. The parts man at the dealer said he had seen numerous pump failures on this car,and unless the tank is flushed or replace the failure repeats in a very short period of time. Jeep said it was out of warranty and when I asked about the flushing with bleach procedure they started to dance and would not provide this in writing and claimed it was not something that applied to my car to begin with. I sense a cover up here. If any others have had this problem please contact me.
The car is a gas hog, I have the 4.0 liter engine, the tires wear out fast and it has poor quality brake rotors on it. Not worth what you pay for it expecially with the high maintenance cost to operate it.

 | nomorejeeps (0) 06/09/2003 | I have a 2000 Jeep Grand Cheroke. At 11,000 miles had to have new brake pads and rotors. Had to fight for warrany coverage. Now, 8000 miles later, the rotors are bad again! Have there been recalls? Has anyone else had this problem? I will never lease another Jeep.

 | Afrotrini79 (0) 05/06/2003 | Rotors changed 3 times in 19000 miles, bad fuel pump, loud rear differential, noises coming from dash board--terrible truck. Good looks dirty tricks. Chrysler shouldn't charge more than 12,000 dollars for this vehicle, I've driven a Kia Spotage that is more reliable.

 | jtristani (0) 03/28/2003 | I am in 1996 Jeep Grand Cherokee FUEL PUMP FAILURE HELL. I am on my 4th Fuel pump in three months, my mechanic is puzzled, he has not heard of the possible fuel tank corrosion issues, but says it is very plausible. Chrysler ought to be ashamed for not addressing the issue.

 | Bill G (0) 03/27/2003 | I will never buy another Chrysler product as long as I live (which may not be long if I keep driving my 99 Grand Cherokee). Nothing but problems since the day I bought it. Engine noise, multiple (4) failed power window motors - 2 of which I had to pay for, bad brake rotors, failed water pump (replacement only available through Chrysler for $135 plus labor), failed fuel pump (hard to start), driver seat losing shape, bad road noise, oil pressure problems. All of this with only $68K miles. If I wanted to make 2 car payments, I would have bought 2 cars. Instead I have a car payment and a Jeep Grand Cherokee corrective maintenance payment. This is precisely the reason Americans buy imports.

 | Kevin G (0) 03/22/2003 | I have had nothing but problems with warped Rotors on my 2001 Jeep GC. Jeep has been beyone arrogant and says it is a normal wear problem. Since when has a company made a vehicle that has to have brakes serviced every 20K miles? My last Chrysler product as their customer service has hit rock bottom since the Germans took over.

 | harv dew (0) 03/17/2003 | About the gasoline tank liner - I have a 1995 Jeep Grand and the fuel pump failed at 115,000 miles (May 2002). The dealer tried this "microbial growth" bs until I had some friends at Conoco put this line to rest. Nonetheless, $800 and a new fuel pump later, I was back on the road. This liner is crap - beware!!!

 | ma-usa (0) 02/03/2003 | Last Saturday, Feb 1, 2003, My '96 Gr Cherokee just sputtered to a stop in the high speed lane of a local highway. I had to get it towed to the dealer for diagnosis and repair. What I found out astonishes me.
It seems that putting gasoline in my fuel tank has caused my fuel pump to fail. I know, it seems ridiculous to me too, but its true. What's more, the dealer indicated it may be several days before he can get parts as several others are having similar problems.
The details: It seems in late 90's Chrysler put a liner in their fuel tanks that deteriorates or dissolves after prolonged contact with gasoline. The sludge that results fouls the fuel pump and the fuel pump eventually fails.
A call to Chrysler yielded only the form letter response "This vehicle is beyond it's warranty period, any maintenance is the responsiblity of the owner" that I have seen verbatim in other's postings on this site. .
When I inquired further, The Chrysler Customer Assistance Hot Line indicated that there were no others with similar issues. This is in direct conflict with the claims of my local Dealership's Service Mgr who has 2 others on his lot with this same problem and indicates he can't get parts because they are back-ordered.
SO, You can see, the replacement of the fuel tank and the fuel pump is obviously the owner's problem since I actually put Gasoline into my Gasoline Tank for the past 6 years!
Pretty Lame.
So let's do something about it! If you have had a similar occurence, please register it here. Daimler Chrysler arrogantly denies that there is any sort of trend - Let's show them a trend!
