Nissan Xterra 5

While our piece of crap Jeep Liberty is in the shop for repairs we are driving a Nissan Xterra. Wow! I love this thing! It feels solid yet comfortable while driving. The interior is quite a bit more roomy than the Liberty. And the pick-up the engine has is phenominal. Passing some idot on their cell phone driving half the speed limit is a breeze. I like this vehicle.

Drives good, looks nice, does not handle wet roads, snow or ice very well. Crashed into guard rail when roads had light rain and i was getting onto a express way. Did this just 1 month after having had to take both of my xterras into the dealer to complain about major rust showing on both my 2003's Dealer gave me so many bad excuses.( acid rain, michigan winters, salt, normal to see rust all over body with 20k miles and one year of normal driving, your suv is white, then i showed them the blue one i also own and they said yea blue does that too. I bet there are hundreds of rust spots on each of my xterras now and have had the dealer repait almost the entire body of the white one and about 30 percent of the blue one. Do not buy one of these unless you dont mind paying top dollor to drive around a rust bucket.Warrenty will gladly cover the rust as long as you can poke your finger into the holes within the first 36k miles or 3 years. Like that would ever happen. I would feel guilty even selling the ones i have to someone else and the dealer told me that they are not even worth 10 k and i only have 32k miles on one of them. Paid close to 27k each so ill just drop them on my property and use it in a place that no one will see me driving it as it will certainly make me look like a fool if i drive it in public. Needless to say i wont by nissan ever again. Maybe ill try the chinese next.

I have the 2002 and cannot wait for the lease to be up... I like it (note: not love it) it's rugid and very truck like (which I like) but it handles terribly in snow (light in the back and heavy up top) If you live where it snows, I would NOT reccommend it!!! I have had so many close calls (with the 4x4 on!)

Among poor gas mileage are underpowered and rust susceptible within the first year. I don't even think the new Xterra's are made in Japan but maybe Mexico, or at least that's what I've been told. Did I mention the engine was made by Ford? Remember the commerical ROCK SOLID well I personally don't want a vehicle that SINKS and this is definitely one that will. Sorry, but I'd prefer one really made in Japan with quality.

I have a 2000 Xterra. I've had it since 2000 and it had 13,000 miles on it. So far, I've had no major mechanical problems or anything. But I definitely think they could have done a better job on the body work. The rubber that goes around the edges of the edge of the door keep coming off, and the "glue" or whatever they used to put them on is black and sticky. It gets all over everything and is damaging my paint. Also, the powder coat on the running boards is peeling. And the coating on the windshield wiper arms (front and back) is coming off. I think they could have put higher quality items on it. Looks are decieving sometimes. If any of you have a 2000, there was a recall on a part in the gearshift. Take it to a Nissan dealer and they will fix it free of charge.

If you want to feel out of control at highway speeds (assuming you can get up to highways speeds due to the lack of power), spend a lot of time at the pump, and experience rust in the first 12 months of ownership (something we haven't seen since the late 70's) AND HAVE THE DEALERSHIP TELL YOU "WE KNOW THERE'S A RUST PROBLEM BUT WE WILL HAVE TO DECIDE WHAT TO DO ABOUT IT" then go buy an XTERRA. Otherwise, spend your money somewhere else. Disclosure: I own a white 2002 Xterra SE with 12k. Bought new 9/17/02 but won't own on 9/17/03.

We have this Xterra se. It is a good suv for the price tag. It gets pretty good gas mileage. I am 4'11 and it fits me perfectly. On the other hand my husband is 6'2 and he feels a little cramped. The engine is a v-6 but doesnt have much power, I wouldn't buy this with the idea of pulling anything. The stadium seating is a nice feature for the kids. I can't really imagine using this off road but it is a reliable family suv. I had to lower my ranking, for our xterra has died at 65,000 miles. It doesn't start at all something to do with the starter and other things. Anyway we have waited almost two months for the parts as they are on National back order. In my opinoun something on National back order should be a recall and honored by Nissan, but it has yet to be! Trading it in when it's fixed! Oh yes forgot to mention now we have electrical shorts engine light and gas empty lights get stuck on.Thinking maybe the Honda Element!

This one is mixed, but overall fails to catch my attaention. Its good off road, and gets good gas mileage for a midsize SUV. But its unreliable, and underpowered. A standard V4?! Many other competitors offer more features and a third row seat.

turn this baby down for 4runner GOOD: roomy, price. ..... BAD: power, gas milage, shocks absorber..... bottom line:.... if you are an offroad/ camping/ skiing..etc kinda person it might be better looking else where..... if you are not... it is better to use that money and buy a GOOD car.. camry/ accord/ maximas/ avalon .. you get better milage too...... if you dont know what to get ... find out what you want then decide on a car.

After test driving a few SUV's, I found the XTERRA to be not only afordable, but comfortable as well! It gets very reasonable gas mileage and handles well on both the highway and city streets.

Great SUV...my mom has one, I drive it occassionally...smooth turning, comfortable ride, & gives you the feeling of a 4-wheel-drive, even when it's not equipped to drive as such.

A great idea that starts at a great price. I'd pay for an XTerra. Lots of options make this worth it.

The Xterra has to be the most innovative SUV I've seen in a while.
