I had the Cingular version back in 2002 when I had a good job, and it worked great. I gave it only 4 stars now because my battery wasn't very good and it needed charging constantly. However, the Cingular service was vastly improved from the nokia 5165.

I have the Motorola StarTac 7868, which I was told is the best of the StarTacs and why I got that particular model, and what it doesn't have in all the latest whistles and bells, it more than makes up for in reception. For anyone familiar with I-40 through TN/NC, this phone will go almost clear through the gorge without cutting out. Some posters have complained about no caller id, my model does have caller id. It does not have a volume off functions, another thing some posters have disliked, but I can set it to vibrate, so it makes a whirring noise but not an actual ring. Unfortunately, Motorola has discontinued the StarTac. I purchased mine off e-bay, and initially it would not hold a charge; I put a replacement battery in it, and it's been holding a charge fabulously now.

By far,one of the best phones ever made. Easy to use and compact design. Rather delicate but no matter.
pritteeyez 12/31/2002
It has the poorest reception of any cell phone that I have ever owned. It is a phone thqatq I would give to my grandma, someone who doesn't use a phone much.
MsVJP 10/16/2002
These phones have no battery life and make them virtually unuseable. I bought 2 of them and will NEVER purchase another one.
Duval 07/06/2001
I cannot get this phone to stay cnnected for over 2-3 minutes. I used to blame it on the service (Verizon), but my wife uses a Nokia and the same service and does not have a similar problem. This is my third StarTac. I love the size, convenience, design, etc., but it is just not dependable. Is anyone else having this problem?
afterglow70 06/12/2001
I love this phone! Had Nokia and others but this is the best. Easiest to use!
jiggafigga 01/15/2001
I like this phone- it's very compact, very handy. The only bad thing is that it is easy to lose.
arshad 01/12/2001
Although these phones are sleek, you have to sacrifice battery life and user friendliness. The smaller the phone, the less battery life and the buttons are harder to press. The buttons are almost at the same level as the phone surface, so if you have average size fingers you end up pressing two buttons at once.

I had this phone before my Audiovox. It's a pretty good phone also. It was a little staticky at times, but it was OK. Small was good!
Storf 12/19/2000
This product, though very small, has a major wear and tear issue. If you are a power user then you might have to deal with a broken encasing since constant opening and closing of the flip mechanisim causes extra stress on the plastic. Its reception is not as good as other mobile phones since it has a relatively weak antenna. You can get a PCS model, but is not recommendable for power users. OEM equipment is expensive as well.
Danman2 11/15/2000
Easy to use and convenient. Not very large, but light weight and no extra bells and whistles that you'll never use.
sport 11/15/2000
I have this particular phone and it's great. Calls are clear and not staticky. I love the caller ID on it. I like Motorola. Everyone in my family has StarTAC.
chronicrj 11/15/2000
Very good phone, either digital or analog. Has good distance and is very versatile. Only problem is, this is a very easy phone to crack.
ubursey 11/14/2000
This is rated a five for stability. Compact, reliable and very easy to conceal. Not to mention how clear it is. Very good.
andalusua40 11/10/2000
I feel the format and functions they use in this phone are very complicated for the normal consumer. It's very hard to easily get to the functions you need to get to. Plus, they have a problem with their LCD screen constantly going out and the phone easily falls apart.
mestrebj 11/08/2000
I have a Startac phone myself. It offers a variety of functions like, pager, voicemail, and ringing styles. The phone is very clear, and has good reception all over the place.
Oatcat 11/08/2000
I couldn't hold a charge and I would plug it in day and night. I still never could call out. It would disconnect me in the middle of calls!
cttibi43g8t 11/07/2000
The batteries have a short life. They are flimsy. The antenna breaks easily.
jose6868om 11/06/2000
They are cute phones. Small and convenient. Antenna breaks easily. Battery time sucks, only one hour of talk time with stock battery.
clien 11/06/2000
Easy to use, lightweight, and looks good. Also heard it didn't cause brain tumors from the radiation.
moniq 11/06/2000
This phone I have felt to be useful especially with storing phone numbers. The only bad part is how quickly it seems to go through the battery without an extra one.
kchakk 11/06/2000
This phone is lightweight and is the size of your had, but the phone itself is sometimes hard to hear and has bad reception.
freiscool 11/06/2000
I have a StarTAC. It gets good reception. If it didn't, I would miss all my booty calls.
bgirl 11/03/2000
I didn't like my starTAC because it didn't have caller ID. Also, it was difficult to understand all the functions and the antenna was cheap and kept breaking.
bubblz 11/02/2000
Great phone. Cool features. Wish the price was a little lower.
johnhs 11/02/2000
Good reception and voice quality. Small and light enough to be a wearable digital product. Nice finish and big display. Small battery has pretty impressive talk/standby time.
crystalguy 11/01/2000
My mom adn dad each have one of these phones and I have used them on many occasions. The phones are too light weight and the structure makes it very easy to break, not durable at all, especially the antenna. Also, quality is poor after it is dropped several times.
nguyenkha 11/01/2000
I personally have this phone and think it sucks. It has bad reception and the antenna always breaks off.
atoy 10/31/2000
I had this phone for a year. It was small and convenient, but once the flimsy, vulnerable antena broke it dropped to many calls.
Quisdom 10/31/2000
Nice and compact. Lots of features. Stylish enough to flash and small enough to keep in a pocket. Quite durable too. My friend has dropped his many times and it still works like new.
sanj6752om 10/30/2000
This phone works decently, but if it ever drops and hits the floor it's over for the phone. It's not durable at all, and the battery life is too short compared to Nokia phones.
lovjones619 10/30/2000
The StarTAC is a good phone. I love the flip action, and it's the perfect size. The thing wrong is its battery life. The bloody thing is usually dead by the end of the day.
rsantos 10/27/2000
This phone is nice looking and is very clear but the problem with this phone is that the battery dies out really quick. I have one, and it's a good phone.
kaos2lfe 10/26/2000
I have the StarTAC Web 7797. It's a great phone because it's very small, is a flip (so you don't scratch the screen), and the screen is indiglo blue for easy viewing at night. You can also go on the web (text only) and receive e-mails. Holds up to 396 phone numbers distributed to 99 stored names.
dtekone 10/24/2000
This was my favorite phone until it fell apart on me. It was very small, lightweight and the battery would last for many hours. But then my antenna broke off and my battery wouldn't charge anymore. The same thing happened to a few of my friends also.
rhoguy72 10/24/2000
Good thing about the phone is that it is small and easy to carry around. Bad thing is that it is difficult to use compared to Nokia. Many of my friends had it broken.
dhooker 10/19/2000
Motorola StarTAC is a small portable phone that fits nicely into a coat pocket. The phone can be purchased in either an analog or digital version. Functions are code driven (ie press function and 5 button to check battery) instead of scrolling through a menu. Physical battery size for the StarTAC is small so there is a maximum of two days of use. However, for an added expense extra battery packs can be purchased to increase battery life up to 7 days.
mgamboa 10/16/2000
Light phone, great small size, looks good in plain black. Options are easy to manuever, no manual needed to operate. Only negative comment is network selection is limited.
kidfusion 10/16/2000
I like how it was small, but the battery life was too short and it seemed like it would break too easily.
mkim 10/04/2000
Small, convenient, but weak. Long time to get reception. Confusing to use.
elai10315om 08/31/2000
This is the phone that I have right now. The Star TAC phones are nice in size and style. They are also easy to handle. They are light weight.
epal10064om 08/23/2000
I've been happy with my startac -- good battery life, very light and compact, nice ring features, etc. etc., but with one reservation-- it "runs hot." Long conversations tend to your ear (the whole side of your head, in fact) feeling like overcooked broccoli.
warr8961om 07/23/2000
Excellent phone with a great battery life and good quality. Motorolas are definitely the best phones out there. Unfortunately they are expensive.
Daid8810om 07/19/2000
The phone is small, but that's not all that matters in a phone. It's not really aesthetically pleasing. It's rather flimsy, and the antenna broke very easily. A sturdier version would be better.
Rajc8588om 07/14/2000
Good phone which is small and compact. Has good reception and is attractive. Very sleek and has a good memory.
Ashl8533om 07/13/2000
The StarTac is the phone of the future. This phone features a display which you can attach to your car and talk while you drive. I think this will decrease the amount of accidents because the driver will be more attentive on the road because he/she won't have to hold a phone.
rodg8438om 07/11/2000
Motorola products gives good reception, and they are sturdy and last long. Plus, the Motorola designs are attractive.
kahe8345om 07/09/2000
Compact size with an okay sound quality. The reception while roaming isn't very good. The battery life could be better.
pjak8317pl 07/08/2000
A very good telephone. The battery is very long, the menu is clear, and the phone is easy to carry and use.
