What does "greatest" mean? That is the real question to ask here. If you are talking about a pitcher that completely dominated for some specific amount of years in a row, then no, Cy Young is not the greatest. But if you are talking about a man who just keeps bringing it, year after year after year. Well, then he is obviously the greatest. Think about what you think of Glavine right now. Ok, now imagine what you would think of him if he is still doing it 10 years from now? Now that would be truly great.

Denton True "Cy" Young was a pretty limber man early in his career, which allowed him to pitch a staggering amount of innings. His win total will never be surpassed because managers and GM's today are more concerned about maintaining their multi-million dollar investments' health. He was a great pitcher in his day, and the Walter Johnson award just doesn't have the same ring to it. The only thing that really shortened his career was the fact that he grew so rotund near the end of it, that players could bunt on him for singles.

Possibly the single most over rated player ever. Yes Cy Young does have the most wins ever, but that is a record that is formed because of the time period. While he has the most wins ever, he also has the most losses ever people tend to forget that though. Players nowadays rarely get as many starts in a career as Cy Young had wins. Also a little known fact is that through the first 3 years of Cy Youngs career the mound was just 45 feet away, as opposed the the 60 feet 6 inches it is today. He was good, no doubt, but doesn't deserve to even get mentioned when talking about the best pitchers ever.

Most Wins. Also the most Losses. A very good Pitcher for a long time but probably never the best in the game. Would not have won the Cy Young Award a single time.

Played much of his career with rules that grossly favoured pitchers against inferior opposition, hence the grotesque number of wins. Very good, however, even in old age against real ball players.

Dominated during the deadball era. Still, you have to give props to someone who wins over 500 games...

Cy's 511 career victories is a record that will almost certainly never be broken. He won at least 32 games in five different seasons and averaged nearly 27 wins a year over a 14-season span beginning in 1891. He also twice led the American League in ERA.

Dead Ball Era Pitcher...

Amazing pitcher.

Other pitchers at the time like Rusie and Nichols were maybe as good as Young and could match him in any particular year, but almost all of them blew their arm out after 8-10 years. Young just kept going and going. Unless something radically changes with the way the game is played now most of his records will never be broken..

He was a great player he was even good enough to have a major baseball award named after them.

One of the most consistent and durable pitchers the game has ever known, Denton True CY Young won 511 games - almost 100 more than any other pitcher in history. He won 30 games five times and topped 20 wins an astounding 15 times. In 1901 Young had his best season and became the fledgling American League's first superstar, leading the junior circuit in wins, strikeouts and ERA. In 1903, he won two games in the first modern World Series to help Boston to the championship.

Koufax rated higher than Cy Young, the greatest pitcher of all time? They don't call it the Sandy Koufax trophy, do they?

He won at least 32 games in five different seasons and averaged nearly 27 wins a year over a 14-season span beginning in 1891. He also twice led the AL in era. He also pitched three no-hitters. Young was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1937. Youngs's career numbers are 906 games played, 749 games started, 511 wins, 316 looses, 2.63 era, 7354.2/3 innings pitched, 1217 walks, and 2803 strikeouts.

CY YOUNG IS THE GREATEST PITCHER IN THE HISTORY OF BASEBALL!EVEN TY COBB WAS AFRAID TO BAT AGAINST HIM TO SAY THAT OTHER PITCHERS WERE BETTER IS SIMPLY STUPID.CY IS THE GREATEST!!!!!!!
jaywilton 05/06/2004
His 511 wins are maybe the most remote record that anyone will ever consider a possibility to break.
arete1952 04/29/2004
Far from the best pitcher in the history of the game. For those that think so, get a copy of Bills James' Historical Baseball Abstract.
Albert Brodeur 04/29/2004
One of the greats of all time

> 500 wins. End of story.
Hardwire 07/17/2003
He died recently before they named the pitching award after him. That's why its named after him and not Walter Johnson. He pitched his entire career in the Dead Ball era. Give me Johnson, Koufax, or even Mathewson over him.

Best Pitcher ever
getback 05/12/2003
Numbers no one will ever ever approach.Numbers that hard to imagine in this day of baseball were a pitcher can't go for more than six innnings.
ellajedlicka21 01/06/2002
We named a pitchig award after him. He is the absolute best of the best pitchers. He had more than 500 wins, an unprecedented amount. His name has become synonymous with pitching greatness.
Johnny Roulette 01/09/2001
Both Christy Mathewson & Walter Johnson were better pitchers. Sure, no one will ever break Young's wins record, but neither will many pass his losses mark(316). He's not even in the top ten for shutouts or strikeouts. He pitched more innings(not all as a starter) than anyone else in history.
jsba737et 11/02/1999
No one will ever pitch as much as he did ... they don't name the award for best pitcher after a bad one!
abox653om 11/01/1999
His wins record will never ever be broken -- how many records can you say that about?
