 | Automatt (43) 07/15/2008 | Popeye is really a terrible role model for children despite the fact that he encourages eating spinach. Let's look at the facts. He has tattoos and is constantly cursing under his breath everywhere he goes. He's always getting into fist fights with people. He has a baby with that Olive Oyl woman, but they're not married. He smokes a pipe. All in all he's not the best hero for your child to emulate.

 | ValkyrieVoice (0) 07/15/2008 | Okay, what's really up with Popeye anyway? Does he like Olive Oyle? Or does he like Bluto/Brutus? Why the Hell doesn't he marry Olive finally?

 | irishgit (151) 01/08/2005 | The early version, probably made in the thirties and forties were very good, a touch risque, and pretty funny. The later ones are just repulsive.

 | Flick01 (72) 06/08/2004 | As a kid I enjoyed both the 1930s version as well as the 1950s cartoons. I agree with what others have said about the art work on the earlier cartoons being better than the later ones but that wasn't something that I paid much attention to as a youngster. Popeye lived in that great cartoon world where he could get a vase stuck on his head and when removed, his face would be the shape of the vase, his pipe could be an airplane or ship propeller, and as mentioned, the stretching of body parts to ridiculous lengths made for a lot of laughs. The mumbling under his breath in the early cartoons is very amusing and quite clever. I have a soft spot for Popeye because it provided the basis for Jean Shepherd's award winning 1967 comedy piece, The Return of the Smiling Wimpy Doll first published in the December 1967 issue of Playboy and won the award for the best comedy article of the year.

 | Solenoid DH (20) 03/08/2002 | My 5 stars apply only to the EARLY Popeye cartoons, not the later dull ones. They were clever, both in plot and animation. "Wotta Nightmare" was an absolute classic. I never did understand why his nemesis was named Brutus part of the time and Bluto at other times. I also never knew whether Swee'pea was a boy or a girl, or where he/she/it came from. But that was part of the fun of the show. It cracked me up how those two guys could walk past a whole row of beautiful women, unfazed, but when they saw Olive Oyl, their eyes bugged out. Also liked it when they were pulling on her and stretching her arms out - great fun to watch when I was little. Oh yes --- Popeye used to mumble a lot of funny things if you listened closely. I didn't really pay attention to that part of it until I got older.

 | jesterr (0) 05/15/2001 | Which Popeye are we talking about? In the 30's. Max Fleischer made some excellent cartoons. In the fifties, pure crap was made. And God help us, in the eighties there was Popeye and Son.

 | CastleBee (85) 05/14/2001 | I'm sorry, but I really HATE Popeye. Simply put, he is just a grumbling, inarticulate, ugly, bone headed little squid whose only apparent goal in life is to occasionally pop spinach in his mouth and beat up his rival. I have no idea how he managed to find an adversary even less appealing and with fewer brain cells than himself, but he obviously did in Bluto/Brutus. I guess in some odd way it would make sense that both these retards would fall in love with and constantly fight over something that resembles a bean pole in a dress more than a woman ... they're so stupid they're probably not even sure what species they are let alone what sex they're opposite.

 | DirtDauber (0) 05/14/2001 | There were times when Popeye was ok and times when he was just really bad. The artwork was always inconsistent and the voice-overs were usually really bad. The plots were always the same between him and Brutus, same fight different street.
