For recent college graduates,
I would only recommend this job to those unable to find work. I have a lot of regrets choosing this company and not taking my other offers that were available upon graduating. The hours, pay, and no job security. I worked about 9-10 hour days unless there was a visit, then it was around 12-14 hour work week (you have visits once a month). I HAD to give up my days off for weeks that we had a visit. You RARELY get back to back days off, which isn't to bad, but it hard to make plans when you are off like Monday and Wednesdays or Tuesdays and Thursdays when all the rest of the world is off on Saturdays and Sundays. I was treated terrible by my assistant and store manager, but I know the stress they are going through because they are getting yelled at constantly. You are in charge of and evaluated on sells for your area. How are you supposed to increase sales if the advertising department cant bring people into the store? You get in trouble with sales being down, even with the economy is doing poorly. So where is the incentive to work if you are unlikely to get a raise at the end of the year, there are no incentives and no bonuses? My store manager was stressed and scared about losing her job, which carried over to the area sales managers, which then carried into the sales associates. I wish I would of read something like this message im posting today before I accepted the job. While working as an Area Sales Manager I had no job security, long hours, and recieved terrible pay. I stayed with the company about a year due to my apartment lease. If I didnt have a lease, I would have probably been out of there within 2 months. So for those college graduates looking to work for Dillard's, please rethink about it. I would try living in a hotel for a month just to see if you can stand it. But for those graduates with no offers available yet, try it out for 6 months and then look for better opportunity out there. This job gave me a consistant pay check for a year, but I also felt like I lost a year when I could have been starting a CAREER, instead of working a JOB.

My mom was just fired from the Oak Park store. She started with Dillard's 20 years ago and was more dedicated than I thought she should be. Over those 20 years I have told her that the management there was terrible. It doesn't seem like anyone there has ever taken even a "how to deal with employees" class. The employees are just a number. You don't get any support or caring from the owners or management. It is ALL about the bottom line to them it seems. So with the shoppers down in this time, my mom's numbers were not where they thought they should have been. So they fired her. No fan fare. No thank you for devoting 20 years of your life to us. Nothing! I will never set foot in there again.

My first shopping experience with Dillard's has been somewhat of a mixed bag. I decided to purchase some items recently because they were having a big sale online . . . I was mostly happy with the item selection, but it was very annoying when (numerous times) an item would show up as in stock but then immediately thereafter I'd see a message instructing me to the remove the item from my cart as it was not available after all.

Their online ordering process is a bit odd as well. I shop online all the time at macy's, bluefly, sephora, saks, bloomingdales, neiman marcus, etc—so I'm no stranger to the way these things usually work. Upon placing my order, I tried to view it in my order history and it didn't show up. I also didn't receive any email confirmation. At least an hour went by and there was still no sign that I'd actually placed an order. Now, I admit that in retrospect I probably should have called customer service before placing a new order but it was late and I was worried the items would sell out if I waited too long (especially with the whole being in stock on the item page and then out of stock in my shopping cart thing that I already mentioned), so I placed another very similar order. Well, about twenty minutes later I get an email confirmation about BOTH orders.

Again, I admit that part of this is my fault for not calling customer service before placing the second order, but in all of my online shopping experience (and I have a lot—the UPS guy comes by almost very day!) I've NEVER encountered a site that didn't provide immediate online access to my order history and send an email confirmation within two minutes or less. I would understand if the email didn't show up right away, but online order records should show up instantaneously.

Anyway, I did eventually call customer service and while the woman on the phone was perfectly friendly and was trying to be helpful, but what could have been a simple process ended up becoming overly complicated. I explained what had happened, and that I wanted to cancel the duplicate items and keep everything else. Well apparently it wasn't going to be as simple as all that— I still don't understand the exact reasoning/process but somehow even though the items I'd ordered were on hold for me, I was told that in re-doing the order I would lose a number of items that were now listed as out of stock.

It was all getting a bit roundabout so ultimately I just told them to cancel both orders (which they did) and I went ahead and placed a new one on my own for whatever items were still in stock online. The items got here relatively quickly (though one arrived damaged), and for the most part I'm happy with the purchase.

All in all, I probably would shop at Dillard's online again if they were having another sale (I did get some great deals), I'll just be more wary next time of the less-than-seamless ordering experience.

HORRIBLE!!! (DILLARDS OAK PARK MALL-KS). I'm a pretty laid back person and understand things happen, so after my first less than pleasant experience returning a defective/discolored shirt, I blew it off and continued to shop there thinking it was an isolated incident. When building our house and looking for new furniture, had my 2nd awful experience dealing with an exceptionally rude, un-informed and crass sales associate in the furnishings dept. Today however was MY 3RD AND FINAL BAD EXPERIENCE--I WILL NOT SHOP HERE ANY LONGER! While shopping for swimsuits (my purchase was nearly $600 btw--on swimsuits alone!) I encountered Lisa who became very abrasive with me regarding the # of swimsuits that were allowed to be taken into a changing room. Seriously?! Another associate of hers had misinformed me of the number of articles that was allowed in a room--Lisa came by and corrected her. Fine, no problem. Doesn't matter to me. I was doing lots of shopping and mixing and matching various pieces so was in an out of the dressing room several times when I began to notice Lisa eyeing me. She was making me uncomfortable but I disregarded it and continued doing my thing browsing the suits. On one occasion as I was headed into the room, she stopped me and demanded to know how many pieces I had--5 I replied and went about my business (the limit is 6btw). I was curious as to her demeanor but again I was trying to just get something picked out so I could get out of there! NEXT thing I know she comes over to me and very curtly (also raising her voice) informs me I'm only allowed X more suits to try on. What in the world? Long story short, she basically escalated the matter into a full out argument. I was mortified....never ever ever have I been treated in such a manner. Not only was it what she said and her tone, but more her implication that I was being deceptive and perhaps attempting to shoplift??!? Now, ironic thing is that I was dressed very casually that day, no jewelry. Obviously she made an incorrect assumption about my ability to pay for the purchase I was intending to make....(not that it matters but my husband is a physician--sweetie, no problem paying for a swimsuit I can assure you of that!). Once I'd selected my suits I continued to browse other items, she could be seen WATCHING me the entire time. Maybe she just had a bad day......or maybe they've had issues with other people, but not exactly a smart move to project all of those prior issues onto your faithful clientele (not to mention one who shops frequently and spends considerable)!

I obtained her name, went to customer service to speak with a manager. He assured me he would most definitely address the matter. I listened to him and then as he was telling me goodbye, I couldn't help but ask--'so, pardon me for asking, but you said you're going to take care of this situation--yet I never gave you the associates name....how can you follow through on your promise if you don't even know who it is I'm talking about?' Needless to say, he (manager's name was Wendell) blew me off.

So, while Wendell obviously isn't going to be correcting the situation I can make a statement with my money....I'm returning the swimsuits and will be shopping elsewhere going forward. I'm encouraging my friends to do the same. Your loss Dillard's.

I worked for Dillards for 18 years on the distribution side of the business. I was recently "laid off" because they closed my department in the distribution center. They decided they couldn't absorb myself and my two assistant mgrs. I was the only manager with a college degree, I guess that intimidated them. They made myself and all of my employees sign a waiver stating that we would never attempt to work for Dillard's again in exchange for severence pay. Only eight weeks of pay if you worked there at least ten years. What a weird thing to make you sign. I have had to try and explain it to possible future employers during interviews, and they don't get it -- neither do I.

I don't work for Dillards, but have applied. However, a friend of mine tells me that sometimes you have to work overnight to do inventory and if you dont' you will be fired. Does anyone know if that is true. They sure didn't tell me that when I applied.

LiquidSilver-you idiot!!! What country are you in where there are jobs everywhere!! No one is hiring anywhere and if they are, it's for $6.00 an hour-no one can live on that!
And saying that to the Dillard's employees-you are more of a beeping idiot!
Our management was asked if a cake would be purchased for an employee leaving after 20+ years and she said no! Where's the humanity in that!
Basically, what's going on is ever since the sons took over the company it has gone downhill. They are into real estate and don't care about retail. And what do realtors like most...$$$$$$$!!!!
There's your answer!

My friend and I and have both been there about a year. Boy, have we learned alot, and do not know how this company isn't being investigated for thier payroll practices, thier insane policies for breaks, vacation hours, SPH percentages and I could go on and on.... We have met some of the most wonderful coworkers and have been astonished and the behavior of others (management and other associates) I don't know of any one employed by this store that is happy with thier jobs. We work hard and do the best we can everyday because we have to, everyone is looking for another job. My friend and I have great resumes we are professional and have always adhered to policies and procedures to the best of our ability but trying to figure out the rules here is impossible to keep up with, this includes times punching in and out. They make it so difficult to feel like a valued employee/person while adding more pressure to sell and those stupid rip off credit cards. We will be so happy to end this experience with Dillards We have never worked retail before hope to never have to do it again.

I worked at the Dillards in Independence Missouri a few years back and after reading all these reviews it brought back some terrible memories of my time there. I was hired to work in the Juniors department after leaving Khols as a manager ( I wanted less hours). I was hired the same day as three other people who were also placed in the same department. They explained the SPH idea with me but assured me that the goal of $120.00 an hour sales were obtainable. They set my open availability to 9:30-5:30 Monday through Friday. My main job duty was not to sell but to do mark downs and floor moves while my scant customers wondered off with the merchandise and purchased them with the older sales ladies in Tommy who had nothing better to do but to wonder around the floor bothering customers in other departments.

One day I noticed I had a high number of returns. Shocked I went to management and asked them what it could be and that same week I lost a dollar an hour. Later I found out the girl in my same department would steal customers receipts (that I and others had rang) and return everything left on the receipt to a gift card and spend it on herself. She got fired but do you think Dillards gave me back that dollar an hour they docked me? NO.

I asked to be moved to a new department but I was told I would have to raise my SPH so I worked my butt of to organize my department and do what I did at Khols and manage it the best way I could (we had no floor manager at that time). In January we had a visit from Mr. Dillard's son and they were impressed with how the department looked and I was awarded employee of the month and was given a 25$ gift card. Two days later I received a letter in the mail for the company informing me that my SPH was low and if I did not bring it back up I would be terminated.

This same time we were inundated with shoplifters, after all I did work in the Juniors department. All of my high end items were being stolen right underneath my nose and we had ZERO security in the store other than the occasional uniformed police officer. That was a joke because all he did was flirt with the sales associates... Needless to say in one month I stopped 11 shoplifters who stole right on the sales floor. I was so mad they were stealing all the stuff I needed to sell to keep my job, that I would walk right up to them and demand it back. The last time it happened I called the officer and he stopped them and got the merchandise back but the people he stopped were in a gang and they threatened my life. It got back to the store manager who informed me that I do not need to not "stop people because that is what Dillards has insurance for"... Nice.

That was enough for me... I spent 1 year and 3 months with that company and on my lunch break one day I walked across the mall and found a job making 3 dollars less an hour working for Sears catching shoplifters! The best job move I ever made. 10 Years later I am a LP Manager and make a great living.

Dillards needs to do away with the SPH system. It does not work and it never will. If they want to keep good employees like myself they need to value them instead of their bottom dollar. Needless to say I have never stepped foot in there since.

I give this company a one rating (if there was the option for a zero or a negative one I would have given it). I've never been with a company that was so completely focused on profit. This company treats their employees like scum. Making people work for SPH is despicable. It turns co-worker against co-worker. Trying to make over $100/hr in the children's department on a Monday morning is a joke. I was one of the top three sellers in my department yet I never used the sly moves that some of the older employees used. I was kind to my fellow co-workers and respectful to my customers. I wasn't one of the "lazy" employees who stood at the register and rung up whoever came their way. There were plenty of those people who were employed there. Also, the kind of people they hired were pretty questionable. I really think that the turnover was so high they would hire anyone who would apply. Granted some of the sales they would have would be good but the quality of about 80% of their product is awful (ESPECIALLY IN THE JUNIORS DEPARTMENT!!!). I hope Dillard's goes out of business. They already closed one of their stores in Omaha (it was a sad, sad store...most of the time no one was in there). I would love if Macy's bought them out.

First of all, to Liquidsilver.. I agree with Anonomousme2, that was very ignorant!!  Some people will temporarily work at Dillard's WHILE they are searching for new jobs, but unfortunately have to stay until then.  You cannot just pick up and find a new job in one day.   Dillard's will hire anyone, and it unprofessionally reflects in their turnaround time.

Dillard's will hire just about anyone at a higher pay than other "dime a dozen" retail stores, (but mind you the higher pay is very very temporary.  They conivingly steer you away from that truth during the entire hiring process).  Because of that fact, it is sometimes people's last resort, as they are desperate for a job.  Once they get hired on to Dillard's, it is all they can do to ever so painfully work for the crappy, corrupt company while they are trying to raise a family, go to school and look for another job.

So Liquidsilver.. lay off and go post elsewhere.

When I quit ten months ago (the Ogden Utah store)  it was the best thing I ever did for myself.  It took me a good few weeks to fully get my health back.  Working at Dillard's really does poison the mind, body and spirit.  Almost everyone I knew who worked there had directly told me that after starting working at Dillard's their health deteriorated in one way or another.  Oh yes,  and another thing. To the few posters who said things such as; "people who complain about working at Dillard's are just lazy/bad workers/can't handle it (etc etc)" ... those people are content in their ignorance and really do need to post elsewhere until they can educate themselves as to how Dillard's really works.  I am always somewhat amused when they say such things, but it more-so irritates me.  These people either (A.) Work at Dillard's as a manager (B.) are one of the greedy sales associates who step on everyone's toes and do not do a single thing to help the department or their fellow associates just to keep their sales up and are just kissing ass thinking that one of their managers might read their post  (C.) are someone from Corporate or someone who is a higher-up and are by default defending their corrupt company (D.) is a customer of Dillard's who has absolutely no clue whatsover as to what really goes on behind the scenes.   Anyway, the great thing is that I have since obtained a high paying job where I am treated respectfully, I am rewarded for doing good work, I am not punished for having to take time off work and when I do miss a day or two from being sick or what not they are just fine with it, when I DO call in sick or go home sick I am not required to get a note from a doctor with my full diagnosis as to what is wrong with me (which is a complete violation of privacy laws),  they do not have an "eight tardies and you're fired" policy (To give one example which actually happened to me once, thirty SECONDS late equals a tardy even if it is because the people working in customer service or the surveillance room took their sweet time in unlocking the employee door.  They still gave the tardy to me anyway!) ... in fact where I work now they are pretty flexible with that as long as it does not get out of hand and I am not too late or if I have a good excuse for being late.  Anyway my point is that I am happy now with my current line of work.  It really puts things in perspective as to how horrendous, unreasonable, employee unfriendly and corrupt Dillard's is.  I am so happy for those of you who were able to escape the personal Hell you had to be subjected to. And for those of you who are still stuck there,  keep your heads held high because you will get out.  You will find a company out there who will give you the respect you rightfully deserve and you will no longer have to have your pay CUT for working your ass off.  Be patient and it will happen!

And to those of you who try to defend Dillard's here is some advice:  LEARN THE TRUTH and read all the posts before leaving your own! :o)

The worst ever. Purchased som perfume from them and was promised a free gift. The perfume came but no free gift. I will never order from this company again. Should have paid attention to the ratings and why they are so low. Hopefully this company will go out of business. Figure one reason would be poor customer service. Should have went to Macys.

To all the employees of Dillards who are complaining, all I can say is this: If the job really was THAT bad, then you would leave. Most Dillards are connected to malls and retail jobs are a dime a dozen. I suggest when you get off work one day, you apply for a job two doors down in the mall. To those who hated Dillards and left the job, what strikes me as odd is how long you stayed before you left. Again, if it was THAT terrible, you would have left in the first month. Someone went as far to say they would rather "shake their A$" then keep working at Dillard's -- well, why arn't you then? And yes, I have worked at Dillards before in case you are wondering.

I have shopped at Dillard's since my mom took me as a kid. When I was 18 and away at college, I had made a Dillard's purchase at South Park Mall in Lubbock, TX. After leaving the store, I was accused of shoplifting. When the the two security guards searched my belongings and purchases and found nothing, not only did they refuse to apologize or give me their names, but told me that they knew I had stolen, they just couldn't find what I had taken and where I had put it. I was wearing shorts, flip flops, and a t-shirt - where did they think I had put these supposed stolen items? When I called the manager to complain, his initial response was that there was no one on their security team matching my description, and that I was making up stories. When I explained what had happened, his ONLY response was 'Please shop again!' No apology from him either. I understand that people make mistakes, and if someone had just said 'I'm sorry' for falsely accusing me of shoplifting, I would have let it drop, but instead, the rudeness of everyone involved INCREASED. When I finally told the manager that I was chopping up my credit card and sending it to corporate and was going to encourage everyone I knew to do the same, he ALMOST apologized. I used to buy everything at Dillard's - clothes, shoes, linens, everything - but no more. This incident happened in 1986 and it still burns me up everytime I think about it. I figure over the years it has cost Dillard's between $60,000 and $100,000 in lost sales from me alone. All because no one would acknowledge they made a mistake and apologize. Jackasses.

I have been overly impressed with my shopping experience at Dillards. The employees that I have dealt with are kind and available to answer my questions. They call to notify me of store events such as promotions, sales, and new inventory arrivals of specific products where I have expressed interest. I highly recommend shopping at the two Northwest Arkansas locations in Rogers and Fayetteville.

i tried to order the kitchenade 5 qt mixer for the $199 price Dillards was offering on google and when i called customer service I was told the price was really $299. AS you can see in previous comments, Dillards has a habit of advertising their merchandise for cheaper to bait a customer then tells them the price is much higher. This definately will be reported to the Better Business Bureau! The manager told the associate that they don't price match and this discrepancy was not their fault. I will never shop at Dillards!

I think the shopping experience for the customer coming to Dillard's is very favorable. It's only if you work there that the problems begin. The SPH is not fair, especially in these economic times, and it causes a lot of problems between assocites fighting for that sale. All the talk that I hear is negative amongst associates and the fear of either not having a job to go to the next day or getting their pay cut is a direct result of having to make their quota. As any of you know that have worked for Dillard's for some time now, the "new recruits" have no idea of what is in store for them. I have worked retail for years and I have never in my life seen such behavior and intolerance from employees. It's time Dillard's changed!!

Will NEVER shop there again. They had advertised a KitchenAid Artisan mixer for real cheap. I ordered it, and the order went through just fine. I even got a confirmation number. A week later, I got an email saying the item is out of stock. I emailed them back and complained that they had plenty of KitchenAid mixers in stock as they were still advertised online but at a higher price. If they were out of stock, why wasn't that indicated on the site? They emailed me back some mumbo-jumbo that the ones that were lower priced were out of stock, but the ones at the normal selling price were in stock. This makes no sense whatsoever as it's the same mixer! I got tired of dealing with their idiocy and vowed to never shop there again. It's not worth the headache and apparently, the prices they advertise online are just a bait and switch method.

I am currently employed at Dillard's and overall enjoy my job. Retail is not for everyone, and it seems people want to bash Dillard's for what is standard in the retail industry. Working a couple nights a week, most weekends and yes...holidays. But if you want to make your sales, you have to be willing to work when people shop. If you want to make a pay increase instead of a pay cut then you have to go after business not just stand around and complain because there are no customers. They have an excellant clientele system and those that utilize it make their own customers and client base. This is an upscale department store and that is what the customers expect. If you can't or don't want to provide it then you will fail here. The retail industry is struggling and if you are a good salesperson then you will find the pay scale to be above average compared to other retailers. I agree there are some bad managers at Dillard's but there are bad managers everywhere. The grass is not always greener.....

I never have worked for Dillards, but I have to say that I have shopped the Colorado Springs Dillards in the past and could clearly see the disgruntled employees. (If I could find one at all.) I have been snubbed by some that I could find. After reading these comments I wonder if they were just so unhappy in thier jobs that they didn't care. I don't blame them! I can understand not feeling dedicated to a company that treats their employees so badly. It rolls downhill to treatment of the customers. I ordered one BCBG blouse online and after 4 weeks of no receipt, I called the number and they didn't even have record of my order. Even after I gave them my confirmation number. No apologies, just "nope, I don't show that order." So I told them to cancel it and went to the store. I asked the sales woman there what section the BCBG was in, she told me they no longer carried it. I continued looking around on my own and found the exact blouse I was trying to purchase and paid for it at the counter. She then looked like she was about to cry and said it had to have been some kind of mistake. I told her no worries. But I have not been back and don't plan to be. I have no respect for any company that cannot treat their employees with respect. My father was a very successful business man. He was also kind. Yes, you can be both and still thrive in this world. So many people getting out of school now justify cut-throat business practices with "Business is business" It's just a bunch of self-serving excuses for being greedy.

Responding again to the actions of Dillard's Department Stores.  The violent, aggressive and intense behavior against the employees is more than we will continue to put up with.  We are a beautiful and small college town in Texas.  Since about a year ago (September 2007) when this Snake of a Despicable Villain took over, she has destroyed  the wonderful harmony and rapport we had with each other.  Her desperation for control is beyond any reason.    The derogatory remarks and rumors she "enjoys" "spreading" shows her low gutter scum discontent she must have in her self.  The joy of her life is to "Incriminate" any Human Being who works at Dillard's.  She is indelicate with her works, actions, facial expressions and I could go on forever.  And, yes, I'm very bitter.  This raffish, fallacious and Liar will go the way of all the communism before her. Rot and degrade in her own misery.  Because that is what she is.  A Very Miserable and Putrid Demon.  We will not stop.  Remember, we will not stop.  Goodness and Kindness will win over this drunkard.

Dillards is a horrible company to work for. As a manager you are treated like dirt. The pressures that put upon you are unrealistic and goals are not attainable. You can never do a good enough job in anybodys eyes.
The pressures you must put upon your associates are just as bad.
unless you are horrific tyrant like my store manager you will never be
successful. If you don't conform to the unrealistic goals and you dare
to open your mouth and disagree you will be fired. If you are not fired you will be humiliated until you quit.

I have never worked for Dillards, but I have worked at competing deparment store in the same mall with Dillards here in Phoenix, AZ. Many of the sales staff that were hired came from Dillard's in the same mall. I used to hear horror stories about their unrealistic sales quota and pay cuts if SPH were not met. Also, some of the Dillard stores are in older or ghetto mall locations. So the clientele is different as well as the spending habits than affluent locations. Perhaps the sales staff have no problems meeting their sales quaotas at Dillard stores in affluent high income neighborhoods such as Scottsdale or Chandler, but you think Dillard's would evalaute SPH with Dillards stores in less affluent or "ghetto" malls where customers are more cost consious. Also, you would think since the economy sucks right now and people are not spending as much on non-essential things that they take this into consideration. You can't force people to buy your merchandise. Also, Dillards pushes their employees to get customers to open credit cards. Almost all department stores (Sears, Macy's, Mervyn's, etc) put pressure on employees to open credit and they use it against you on your evaluation. I have also have noticed that in our weekly employment section of Arizona Republic newspaper, Dillards constantly have big advertisments for sales staff for various Dillard locations throughout the Phoenix area locations. Which tells me they have high turnover. High turnover=unhappy workers. I have thought about applying for a part-time job at Dillard's but after the horror stories I keep hearing, I rather flip burgers for a living.

I WORKED FOR DILLARD'S FOR 9 MONTHS..I LEFT BECAUSE I COULDNT GET ALONG WITH COUPLE OF THE SALESMAN, SOMETIMES, I AM A BIT DIFFICULT..BUT I MUST SAY, THAT DILLARD"S IS A FINE COMPANY. THEY CARRY GOOD QUALITY MERCHANDISE AND FANTASTIC SALES FROM TIME TO TIME.. THE PROBLEM, IS THAT MANY THAT WORK FOR DILLARDS, HAVE OTHER JOBS. THEY ARE TIRED AND STRESSED OUT..I WORKED 22 HOURS A WEEK AS MY ONLY JOB AND I ENJOYED IT VERY MUCH..MOST MANAGERS WERE GOOD AND DESCENT PEOPLE. THIS WAS AT FRISCO ANYWAYS..MY WIFE STILL WORKS PART TIME THERE, SHE FEELS THE SAME AS I...THE ONLY PROBLEM, IS THAT SHE SPEND MOST OF HER PAYCHECK EVERY MONTH...I MISS DILLARDS..AND MOST OF THE EMPLOYEES . THIS COMPANY IS JUST SHITTY, my wife recently was let go by dillard's because she was honest about something that she had said when asked by the manager if she had said this about the managers leg licking pet who has worked there for 4 months. Most everyone has hit the main things, but there is atleast one more that everyone seamed to forget. Had any of you ever tried to get a holiday off work, or a day around a holiday? I am in the military stationed 800 miles from my family and 800 miles from her family, how in the hell are my wife and i ever supposed to be able to spend any holiday with our family when the idiots that run these stores won't let you off work. How about when they asked my wife if she wanted to move from clothing to cosmetics and she said that she didn't so they moved her anyway. Needless to say a few months later, she gets a pay cut for not making her sph, so all in all, she spent 3 1/2 years working in hell and ended her employment making less than what she started it at. I would rather go back to afghanistan for another 15 months than to see her go through the emotional termoil that she was experiencing within her first couple months of working there. The managers there are complete and total idiots, most of the employee's are full of shit and lie their ass's off. I dont know but it is my best advice that NO ONE EVER WORK FOR THEM. I have a friend whos wife is a manager for them, he has the exact same complaints that I have. He hasnt been home for the holidays in years. The best part of it is that if you are a loud mouthed, ignorant, rude, disrespectful lesbian then most of the managers will love you....  me personally i would rather casterate myself with a dull rusty spoon with no pain medication than work for a slave shop like this.  I know for a fact that any employee that says they are happy working for dillard's would probably have a better chance of suffering from PTSD (post traumatic stress disorder) than any of the soldiers coming home from Iraq or Afghanistan.......

I have worked at the Dillard's in Dothan, Alabama for just over a year. The first 11 months were pure hell. My ASM was the devil. Not a day went by that she didn't call me stupid or degrade me in front of fellow co-workers and customers. I am a huge animal lover and she was so not. I'll never forget the day that she told me to take my dogs out back and shoot them, I would be much better if I did. After 6 months of hell I went to the store manger and spoke with him. The name calling stopped but coming to work was unbareable. With alot of prayer, she left Dillard's after 20 years on employment. I cried the day I found out she was leaving!!!! I now have the best ASM. She is a very hard worker and listens to my cares and concerns. It is so great. Dillard's does of course still have its downsides. The monthly credit card quota is crazy and not a month goes by that I'm not called into the office to be told selling credit cards is part of my postion and if I want to keep my job I'd better get on it. The SPH is awful. The department I work in is so slow and I'm lucking if I do $200 a day. My daily goal is around $800. I am looking at a paycut my next review and will be giving my notice to Dillard's when this happens

Dillards is the bottomfeeder of so called big box "upscale" dept stores. Owned and managed by white trash in suits, Dillards is unable to compete sucessfully in any market where similar compitition is in place. The Augusta Mall store in Augusta, Ga has to be the most unfriendly shopping atmosphere I have ever encountered. The so-called store manager is an embarrassment to the profession. This idiot has been responsible for the wrecking of stores in Colorado, Florida, Louisiana, and now Georgia. profitable forward thinking companies do not export an incompetent from one division to another. Textron would never allow a senior exec to ruin a division and give said moron another opp. to do the same in another division. Dillards upper managment is composed of for the most part people who view human capital as s**t on their heel. Dillards standing in cities and towns where they arrived following the Merchantile acqusition is less than zero. I gave that disgrace of a company 1 star, only because there isn't a slot for rating a business "less than zero"!

I purchased a Brahmin handbag, originally priced at $410, named Jackie. I went to register the bag and it had a Mariella - Toasted Almond registration card in the zipper pocket. I have been unable to find the Mariella, but the Jackie North South Croc Tote is definitely not the bag I paid for. I cannot find anything close to this bag, but it smells like leather. In the bottom of the bag is a tiny little black tag marked, Brahmin on one side and made in China on the other.... Even Dillard's is not exempt from selling a legitimate fake! Jacksonville, Florida

(Whoops it cut off the end of the message. Here is the rest.)

And that I haven't been taking orders, which again, is another false accusation. I always got things done. The only thing I couldn't do anymore and that was moving fixtures and heavy objects. I wouldn't do it. Soooo, anyone who wants to work at Dillards. Don't do it! It's a horrible work site. There are so many things I didn't mention that was happening. . . just trust me or anyone who complains about it. It's real.

The people have sweatshop clothes for sale. I found nothing that appeals to my tastes and the prices for them are expensive. I do live in the Bay area, but I did shop at one before in Lexington, Ky and Cincinnati and found that they act the same way. What doesn't make sense is that the stores are located in the most inconvienient locations. I could not shop at a place where there is high crime or is run-down.  I do hope that there won't be another one opening soon close to me, Stockton is far enough!

As an Employee: I currently work at Dillards in Albuquerque. It is not all that bad but when it's bad, it is horrible. I agree, the Dillard's policy's are rediculous, I have NEVER worked at a job where I wasn't allowd to take a 15 minute break. Standing on your feet all day isn't easy and it would be nice to take a break once in a while. The worst part is working with the sales sharks that do nothing but stand behind a register not lifting a finger or contributing to their department. When these sharks think you are there to clean there mess and hog sales it makes you want to cry. When you try to tell management they lie to your face telling you they will take care of it but they won't! All they care about is weather or not your making your quota! It's sad and all it does is lower employee moral because when one person feels they don't have to do their job, it becomes a chain reaction and the few people who actually give a darn about their department get stuck with the crappy end of the stick. I work VERY hard for the amount of money I get paid and I am thankful that I have a job but it would be nice for positive changes to be made. As a customer: The quality of the clothing (unfortunatly) is completely horrific, it's absolutely NOT worth the money they ask for because you wear it once and it literally falls apart! No lie, everything I have EVER bought from dillards has not been the quality it promises to be and that includes Mens, Womens, Juniors, Kids with the exception of their shoe dept. This is COMPLETELY unexceptable! You can't get any customer service once you go in AS A CUSTOMER NOT AN EMPLOYEE because once the associates realize you work there, they think they owe you nothing, not even a friendly hello. The first day I worked on the floor, I was happy, all smiles, ready to work, friendly to everyone but it felt like I was working in a friggin mortuary and to this day is still feels this way! I hope Mr. Dillard reads this! He goes into the store, doesn't tell ANY of the associates hello. How does he get off treating people this way? A store that started with the intention of giving good quality service for the most reasonable prices is now doing the complete opposite. I'm sure Mr. Dillard Sr. is rolling over in his grave!!!!

I purchased a skirt that when worn once, the seams were pulling and it was ruined. I didn't have the tags, but I printed off a copy of our credit card statement, and they wouldn't take the skirt back! Not only was I dissapointed that they wouldn't take responsiblity for defective merchandise, but the woman helping me was very rude, and she was the manager.

I worked at store #773 and I just quit today!!!. I actually quit last week, but they called me to come back for their inventory. I was under so much stress that my head was pounding everytime I got to work and my face was breaking out. I am so happy I quit. It will take me a few days to recover though. The managers are assholes and my manager only gives a fuck about her top sellers. No matter what they do she gots their back. Dora is such a slut and the other managers use her like a dumb ass. She must really need her job.

Well, I was an ASM for Dillard's for a few years and I finally walked away because I got tired of the poor treatment of their employees. I was very honest when I interviewed people for the job which the other managers only said all the positives about working at Dillard's. I gave them all scenarios. Pay increases, Pay Cuts, and a possibility of losing their job if they did not make the 67% rule.

I was a hands on manager that was there to help out in anyway. I ran the shoes area and I knew about the markdowns and stock issues in regards to the staff not being on the sales floor to make sales. So, I would come in early and scan the entire stockroom and sometimes sticker the boxes before my associates would arrive and all they had to do was label the floor, arrange the markdowns, and take turns with the stock.  I had the best staff in the store and did whatever possible to make their day as fun as possible since they had their qoutas to deal with. I would purchase cakes on their birthdays and arrange a holiday buffet out of my pocket to show gratiude for all their hard work. I would thank them all for their hard work before I left for the day. But everyone knows the stupid sales, being hard working does not cut it so I would lose great people because they would either quit or get fired for the lack of sales. Where I worked the Dillard's sales were trending down for 10 years and no matter how hard the staff or I work we very rarely make the month and the year.

The ASM review is if I did not get an increase, I would not get a raise so I went the four years without a raise. My boss told me that since I could not get an increase in my department he would not consider promoting me to a larger volume department and gave me a deadline of making my months in the next three months or I would be fired.  Even with that lingering over my head, I still remain the same with the staff because it was not their fault that the store was losing business. So the week before inventory, my staff and I had everything ready and my maps were done and numbered for inventory. My boss called me and asked if I was done with my inventory and I said yes. Then later that afternoon, he called me to his office and said he was moving me to a larger area but with the same pay because that manager of that dept was lazy and had nothing ready for inventory which I had 5 days to get the department done. So, I remembered what he told me and about not moving me to a bigger area because of sales and I had a feeling he was using me to clean up another dept and then letting me go shortly after inevtory because he knew my inventories in the past were successful and the new one taking over my old area could sit and wait since everything was done. So as I look at my completed maps and assignments for inventory that night in my house. I said screw it and I ripped everything and the next morning I told my boss, I QUIT! He had the nerve to ask if my maps were done, and I said yes they are in my desk. (Ha Ha) if he only knew they were in my trash.  I am so happy to see Dillard's stocks down 46% for 2007. They deserve it!

I am a stock worker at Dillards in Tampa. I love my job! I enjoy the other employees and I think I have a great job! It's not that I do not have alternatives, I am a Masters student at USF in Tampa. Yeah, corporate have their goals, but I love working stock and dock because I make the store!! I can fashion counters and receive new displays. I bet most of these negative complaints against the company are from people who just CAN'T handle it. M. Hood Store #202

I work at a dillards in San Antonio Texas and, yes all the negative comments are true... and people who don't work there rly should keep out of it because you rly have no clue what its like on a daily basis working for idiots that know they are unethically taking advantaged of hard working people.... there are employees that work damn hard for there living that have been there for 6-22yrs and are actually making under what they were making when they started. Hard work and loyalty doesn't pay off there. I personally work extremely hard but of course that mean working in MANY other areas out of MY OWN and not getting speacial hours for it which also means not makeing your ridiculously high quota. The turn over rate is extremly high... and for the people that don't work there if you haven't noticed its not one loaction "complaining about there job" its EVERY location.... anyways one more thing.. don't yall love how when "The Dillards" come to visist how they just walk through and ignore all the employees...hmmm maybe if they cared to talk to them they could improve there company and profits

I currently work at Dillards and I am trying desperately to get out! I work at Dillards in Boise, Idaho and if we don't open a credit app for every 40 hours we work we have to go to a credit app class from 8-9am on Saturday mornings, then come back at 10am or 12am (depending on when our shift starts). And if we miss it (say because some people don't have childcare in the morning, or I have school!!!) we get an unexcused absence. Does anyone else have to do this? The interesting thing is: when corporate comes for a visit all the evidence of the credit app classes are taken down and there is no credit app class.... Also! If you still work there watch your quota card. I had been watching mine because my sales goal was changing overnight and they were screwing me over on purpose! For instance, I was $27 over on 10/14 and came back 10/15 and it said on 10/14 I was $112 under! Either way they're going to cut your pay, even if they have to sabotage. I could tell you of corrupt stories until I turn blue in the face. I hope they get what they deserve...

Speaking as former Dillard's employee. First,I was offered another job that is why I left Dillard's was an opportunity that sought me. I was very happy at Dillards. I would go back in a heartbeat provided I could work with the same management team. If you work hard and sell all the above (work and sales) can be done. Shoppers really do not shop until 12 ish and it is pretty scattered when they do shop. I was able to keep my salary after my 6 month sph was evaluated. Dillard's is a great opportunity. Especially if you want to get into management and willing to move out of area. Dillard's is sort of like the Army, they are looking for a few good men and women. The Comments about the Dillard's family are unfounded. They are just private and do not brag about there generosity. They come into the store once a month and are very pleasant. What minimum wage job opportunity pays $9.00 an hour and offers benefits including an awesome 401k? All Dillard's asks is for us to keep there standard of excellence. I found my manager more than fair and willing to help me with my schedule to meet my families needs. I hope the company makes it because Mr. Dillard SR. was one class act. I would say to anyone interested in working there? Who would not enjoy working at the Boston Ritz. Now that is class and if you time it right it is class with a deal!

your comment is very ignorant.  obviously you have no idea what you are talking about. How dare you say that the workers are just lazy.  if you had any idea as to the ways of dillards you would realize it is just the opposite.  the lazy workers are the ones who profit and the hard workers...the ones who take pride in their job actually suffer.  I worked at dillards for three years and had 3 different managers who all said what a hard worker i was.  but alas hard work does not pay off.  Instead all my hard work cost me my job.  in order to do mark downs and put up stock i had to be off the selling floor because i worked in shoes and our stock was in the back...so some days i would spend up to 5 hours in our stock room because the lazy ones wouldn't do it and since i was in the stock room and not on the floor selling my sales were not met and i was fired.  the lazy ones are the ones who will only sell and nothing else and they are the ones who get ahead at dillards.  before you make comments you should educate yourself on the topic.

I went to Dillard's to buy things for my new house and no one would help me. Sales people would not make eye contact with me and always went the other way when I was approaching them.
Finally they called the police. The officer came over to see what I was doing there.
This happened at a Dillard's in Phoenix Arizona.
Oh, I'm a Black man of 54.

Why didn't I say no when they hired me, working there is CRAP, they're living in a fantasy world and treat their employees like crap. Even my manager who were the best one in the world, quit because of the way they treated him. DON'T IGNORE THIS PLEASEE!!! I IGNORED THE COMMENTS HERE ONCE AND REGRET IT WITH MY LIFE. Anyway I quit and I have to say how HAPPY I AM NOW.
