Macy's 3

This seems to be an item for people to complain about their employment at Macy's so I feel a little out of place posting a review as a consumer. I've been in perhaps ten of their stores in various parts of the country (mostly but not entirely in Washington, Oregon and California) They seem about the same as every other big department store, no better and no worse. Prices are about the same as other places, service runs from indifferent to average, and the general experience is thoroughly mediocre. Which puts them in pretty much the same bag as their competitors.

I have worked for Macy's for about 3 weeks now and it's probably been one of the worst jobs I've had and I have informed my manager that I'm quitting and taking a better, higher paying job. The only thing that has even kept me afloat this long has been the my cool coworkers, and of course the need to pay my bills.

Like some others have touched on, it is a very unprofessional workplace. While waiting for my group interview I could hear managers trying to pass the interview off on each other before finally, about ten minutes late, one manager reluctantly agreed to do the interview. I came back in a couple days later for my scheduled meeting with the manager of the dept. I was to be hired in. He wasn't even there. I waited about 10 mins, he never showed up. He called me later, didn't apologize for missing the meeting, and asked if I might come back in a few hours later to meet with a different manager for a position in another department. This was a red flag for me, but I needed the job.

So then the fun really began. Like everyone else says, they push their sales associates way too hard to get credit and make sales goals. In one shift you might have three or four different managers asking you if you have made your sales goal yet or if you got any credit for the day. I just don't think it's right to push customers to sign up for a credit card with a ridiculously high interest rate, especially when they have already said no, they aren't interested. It's one of those 'don't take no for an answer' kind of things. While Macy's and its managers would insist that they never want to force the customers into anything, that is absolutely not true. They do expect their employees to force, and I think that is just poor customer service. And all of this wouldn't even be THAT bad except they pay their associates shit. I was making $.35 above minimum wage which is absurd for the effort they expected me to put into the job. The bottom line is, I'm not falling for it. I'm not as stupid as they think I am.

A lot of people on here have been saying things like, "Hey if you don't like it, then leave! Macy's isn't holding a gun to your head." Well, first of all, people need jobs to pay their bills. I applied for about 25 jobs before Macy's hired me. I was grateful to Macy's for giving me a job and the ability to pay my bills (kind of). But once I found a better job (where I will be making more than $3 an hour more than Macy's was paying me and I don't have to push credit or make sales goals) you better believe I was out of there. I told my manager I was quitting the same day I was told I would be hired at the new job. The other thing is, if you're a good employee, Macy's practically does hold a gun to your head to stay. My manager countered every reason I had to leave, trying to convince me that I would soon be making as much as I would at the new job if I just stuck it out (which I know is b.s. cause I asked the other girls in the dept. what they were making and it was still shit, even after having been there for years), telling me that Macy's is a great company, etc. She even tried to get me to work on call. She made it extremely hard to quit, but thank GOD I did and I only have two more days there and then I'm free.

For anyone considering employment at Macy's, be forewarned. It sucks.

I'm going to review as a customer and a former employee. I worked at the brand Macy's San Tan in Gilbert, AZ. It is a prototype store, so very different than most macy's. More boutiqueish.

First with the good: As a customer, if you are dilligent, you can find some screaming bargains that are cheaper than before they sell it to Ross or Marshalls. I discovered that by working there and seeing the clearance items, etc. My daughter is now dressed in designer outfits that I bought cheaper than I could have at Wal-Mart. The return policy is amazing. 6 months from the time you buy is unheard of. If your item is damaged (much of time even if it is fault of your own) they return it. They have several different methods of finding the item purchased if you lose your receipt.

The not so good: They have several brands in departments that can be bought at Wal-Mart, such as Playtex bras. I thought this was a higher end store? As an employee, if you happen to shop at the store you work in, it is more stressful than fun. As soon as you make your purchase you better high tail it out of there and put it away for fear of LP accusing you of theft.

As an employee

First with the good. I was lucky to have an awesome manager and I really loved the people I worked with. Many of them were in the same boat I was, which is suddenly losing their job, or having trouble finding one.

Now the not so good: It has been said time and time before on this thread but here goes the confirmation that this shit really happens. My story:

I am licensed esthetician and thought working in the Cosmetics Dept. in a dept. store would be awesome. I saw an ad for Macy's hiring for the cosmetics dept. I applied and received an email inviting me to a "group" interview. Ok, never had that before, but then again I never worked retail before.

I go to the interview that was scheduled for 3. About 25 of us are there. We are all patiently waiting until 3:20 when a frazzled freshly showered HR manager comes in. Her hair is still wet. okey dokes. She starts off the "interview" by announcing that there are no cosmetic positions available, but there is one position in shoes, and jewelry. We all look at each other. After a ridiculous group rah rah session, we are taken in one by one. When my turn comes, she asks me which of these four depts would you like to work in: Men's, shoes, children's or lingirie. I was little caught off guard but said, lingerie or children's. Perfect she says and schedules an interview with the dept. manager. WTF? Didn't she just say there were only two positions? She calls to confirm interview with a different time but ok, whatever. So I show up with another applicant. She was there for the Starbucks that was going to be in the new store. She gets called in only to leave minutes later saying that she assumed she had the job when they said welcome to Macy's but was just then told that there are no positions for her. Wow, that was weird. I wait my turn. 15 minutes after my scheduled interview, a frazzled lady says she will be with me in a minute. She comes back five minutes later to say she didn't even know I was coming etc. Awkward! we sit in the dimly lit home section, she asks a few questions, I am clear with her that I want cosmetics but am willing to get my foot in the door, know I won't get rich in retail, but I willing to work my butt off. She says welcome to Macy's. Now I'm not really sure if I actually had the job based on the previous lady, but alas, I am hired! So all of that, just for the interview... the day before a bra fitting class I was invited to interview with the Benefit counter which just happened to be at the same time as the bra fitting class. I decided to not burn bridges (since I didn't know if I would get it or not) and keep my commitment. My manager was very appreciative, and vowed to help me get into Cosmetics.

then the store is brand new, so all of us newly hired employees (many of which were in my interview) put the store together. It was hard work, but actually pretty amazing to see what we did and the bonding with everyone from all departments was great.

So we are all excited to open our store. Of course credit is the MOST important thing. And twice had to watch a non-union message encouraging us that it is NOT in our best interest to sign a petition to have one. ok, whatever, I'm not pro-union anyway. No big deal. Much to my surprise, I was actually pretty good at retail. I quickly became a pro at bra fittings, did pretty well with credit without even trying hard, did really well in sales despite the fact that we were WAAAY over what our goals should have been. so I got the employee award three months in a row. Four months in, they do a major shake-up in cosmetics. I had several friends in the dept. One of them told the Store Manager Negative Nancy (I mean Mary) Too make a long story a tad shorter, Mary basically tears me apart. Doesn't know my numbers which were stellar, but knows all my habits. Yeah right. This woman introduced herself to employees who had been there from the beginning SEVERAL times and asked if they were knew. Funny at the time, but at that moment infuriating. One week later, I get the employee award again. But I'm not good enough for cosmetics. SO... After that little talking to, I lose my excitement. I was still always super nice to the customers (its not their fault!) and had people come in time and time again just to see me. Not usual when in lingerie! But mary thought I couldn't pull in clientele. Really Mary?

During this time, loyalty (my manager actually told a customer that she would give ME a brownie (the one she just offered them) if they opened a credit. I was so shocked and embarrassed, I'm pretty sure I never made eye contact with them the rest of the time), Clientele, Call from the phone book, catch a thief, work six days in a row, market while not on the job, do go backs, do the start teams job, and correct their problems, sign and circle, etc. All for 9.25. AND a hope of a raise at the year mark which is apparently around 1 percent, assuming EVERYONE meets the goals. Nice. Someone earlier said, you don't like it, leave. They aren't putting a gun to your head to work there. Well, sort of they are. Since jobs are hard to come by around here, you did feel lucky to have a job at all and we were reminded at least once a week, if we don't get results there are plenty of people out there looking for a job. My days off consisted of me getting out of bed only for necessary purposes, since I was usually exhausted and needed to recover.

A co-worker was fired for buying his mom a pair of shoes, and using his discount for them. Major paranoia when buying there. Then Macy's West turned into My Macy's and the East Coast Policies now applied.

the best way to summarize the experience is like boot camp to break you and a cult where they brainwash you. If you are a customer, know that yes, some people are just rude, whether they work there or not so you will get the bad associate, like we sometimes get the bad customer. But please try to understand that they are put under an enormous amount of stress and not just a cashier.

Whoa, I guess I had a lot more to get off my chest than I thought!

I HAD AN AWFUL AND RUDE EXPERIENCE FROM UTC MACYS COUNTER ON THURSDAY SEPT 10, 2009 AT 2:07 PM. THE SALES ASSISTANT WAS NAMED Atoosa AT THE CLINIQUE COUNTER and she was soooo rude to me. I have always been a loyal customer of clinique from eyelinear to mascara to lipglosses and even macys, its one of my favorite stores from fashion to shoes to makeup, but i had never had such a hard time returning this cosmetic item that i was not satisfied with, but my experience there was so bad and i have never been treated that way and i definitely dont deserve it. I wanted to return a product and she gave me a really hard time, claiming i had used too much product even though when purchased it i had a long conversation with another sale person who said that the bottle can be empty and i can still return it because she suggested this product and said it takes 4-6 weeks to see results, i didnt see any results. if im extremely unsatisfied and angry. any way i feel like macys scammed me and i am so angry at atoosa and the manager who worked at that store. the rudness level is just UNBELIEVABLE, i would curse on the review if i didnt have my class!!!!! they now have three disgruntled customers because i went with my friends and we were all very shocked at the ridiculously poor service. The rude manager and sales assistant should reconsider their occupations in CUSTOMER SERVICE. they aren't even pretty with good skin. Especially these people, They shouldnt be selling and giving advice with that attitude

I opened a Macy's card account a few months back and purchased a few bedding items. The Calvin Klein bedding set I bought looked very nice, but was very thin for the price I paid. Over $307 on sale for 50% off I purchased a Queen Sheet set, Coverlet, and Duvet (essentially 2 sheets sewn together). All of which wrinkle very easily. Now I am still happy with the product over all, but I am not happy with their card service. For missing a single monthly payment of $8 my next bill had a $29 Late fee!! Not only this but I received numerous phone calls requesting payment even though the bill clearly states it is not due until the end of the month. I do not recommend having a Macy's card unless you never forget a payment or don't mind being gouged with ridiculous fees and harassed with phone calls. After using it only once, I am cutting up my card and will never use it again. I highly doubt that I will purchase from Macy's again either.

My daughter wanted a backpack. We bought it at PacSun. It was on sale. We went into Macy's and she saw the same backpack which was priced .50 higher than the regular price at PacSun and no sale or discount was being advertised. My daughter then saw another backpack, same brand, same style but in a different color that she preferred. Macy's supposedly has a price match policy so I asked a clerk at Macy's to do a price match. She said she had to get permission from the manager. After 20 minutes or so, she came back and said the manger said they would not be able to match the price PacSun was offering. I asked the clerk for the contact information of the district manager and she said she would have to get that from the manager. After waiting another 15 minutes the clerk came back and this time the manager came with her. The manager said there was no reason to contact the district manager, that she was there and was able to explain the store policy and that she wanted to make sure she understood what I was asking for. I explained that PacSun had a better price and an even lower sale price, showed the manager the receipt from PacSun and requested a price match. The manager again said that Macy's would not be able to match the PacSun price and explained that Macy's doesn't consider PacSun a competitor and stated that the Macy's price match policy only applies to large department store competitors like K-Mart and JC Penney. I bet Macy's shareholders, if I could share this information with them, would not agree that PacSun is not a competitor. I asked the manager for district manager's contact information and she refused to provide that information. This is a Sunday early afternoon, two weeks before school starts. The mall is packed with shoppers and stores like Hollister, Aeropostale, Buckle, Forever21 and PacSun are very busy. While I was waiting those twenty minutes for the manager to come over and talk to me, I notice Macy's has exactly four shoppers in their Junior's Department, two of which are just passing through and never leave the main aisle. My guess is they are on their way to one of these stores that Macy's does not recognize as a competitor. As for me, I just cut up my Macy's card and won't be back. I still wanted to discuss this experience with a district manager so when I arrived home I checked the Macy's website. The contact information is vague but there is a page that allows you to submit comments and answer a series of formatted questions with very narrow scaled answer selections. I also noticed that the Macy's website only provides a place to recognize associates for outstanding service. I am left to wonder why Macy's does not accept negative comments or complaints? Is that a reflection of the same arrogance that allows them the belief that PacSun is not worthy of being considered real competition? No telling how many thousands of dollars Macy's spends in advertising dollars to bring customersinto their stores - ironic that it cost them less than $10.00 to drive me out thedoor. I will spend about $700 on our family's back to school shopping and not one single cent will be spent at Macy's. They shouldn't be concerned though, because none of it is being spent at any of their competitors either. I will take my girls shopping at those "other" stores - they are the ones that they really want to go to anyway. I remember the good old days of Meier & Frank. Sad they were taken over by Macy's.

I worked there for 2 years, at first I really liked it because I was into fashion, and liked talking to people about clothes. I of course enjoyed the 20% employee discount since I liked shopping. I also learned a lot from my experience there. But that sadly turned for the worst. They started laying off people, cutting hours, getting rid of job positions, closing down departments (like gift wrap), making small changes to policies and procedures.

I would sometimes be the only one in my department. The department I worked in would always be busy, even on a "slow" day. I would have to check fitting rooms, do go-backs, ring customers, do recovery on the floor (fix tables, check price scanners, check racks, etc). If nothing of this was done I'd have my manager talking to me about it the next day. How could I do a three person job by myself. I at the time was also going to school. The go-backs in our departments were endless. I went to school in the morning, full-time. Went to work right after school, full-time also. I would always close. Sometimes I would be so tired that I would just stand at the register because I hated when I was doing something like go-backs and a customer helped for help. I had to drop very thing and help the customer. Back and fourth. If my manager saw me she would always say something rude. I didn't care what she said, I would just ignore it. I also had my fair share of bad customers. I would always keep my cool because I'm a very patience person. The same old stuff happened until things started to slow down.

Business wasn't what it use to be. Even on a big sale day it was quite. We associate liked that things slowed down so we could catch up with go-backs. Then the news came that Macy's was laying-off people again. But this time it was mostly executives getting fired, no associates. As the little people we were happy. Changes were made even if we didn't know what those changes were. The changes were strange but needed. This went on...

About a month or so I decide to work only four days instead of five so I could concentrate on school. I was suppose to change positions with my co-worker who wanted more hours. She worked four days and I worked five days a week so it was perfect for us to switch. Until my manager informed us that seniority comes first so who ever was on the waiting list was next to take my place. My co-worker had 7 months on the job. A lady from other was to take my place because she wanted more hours and I were to take her place. My manager informed me that this would be "like a promotion" because I was moving up from my current position. I didn't understand what this meant, if I was still doing the same thing but in a different area? and getting paid the same. I went with it any ways. Two months in my promotion, I got a surprise.

I was brought upstairs to the security's office and they told me they were going to ask me some "questions". They wanted me to pay back some money that they said I got from some price adjustments, which I did. However the policy had changed, so I had to pay... and later found out I was fired.

I was mad at the beginning, but later on was so happy that I didn't have to deal with people that were stupid, customers, managers, employees, etc.

This was the worst job any person can have, working at Macy's. Expecting working for MAC Cosmetics because Macy's doesn't control them.

I didn't talk about the Macy's credit card, because that is a long story. But I will say this that it is bulls**t. Enough said.

Look out for my tell all book soon...

Don't get the credit card unless you will go into the store and make your payments. Mail them and the rates go up because you have no control over when THEY say they received you payment. Paying bills online is not dependable. Paying the Macy's card had been ok but the Visa part has been a constant nightmare. The payments are rejected on the Visa and accepted on the Macy's, or somehow the payments are lost in space and you have to have your bank contact them to show they have your money.

i lost my job at jc penney and i've been looking for another job like crazy, its been 4 months and this is my third interview, Macy's emailed me having me schedule an interview, i look forward to working here because the pay is better than jc penneys (i heard it was $9) but i've been reading all these comments and im not so sure about this anymore, if anything i'll probably take the job and stay while i find another better paying job....its kinda scary all these goals they set up for you, i mean macy's is pretty expensive to think that you have to meet the 1000 dollar goal..it seems unrealistic specially now that the economy is so bad, people dont even want to buy let alone from macys....oh gosh, im a bit nervous now, i mean from what i read macy's sound way worse than jc penney...

I agree with Jkool025,

Everyone complains about their job. Well I can say this. I have been with Macy's for over 3 years, I don't have to make sales goals or push credit. I have a set goal of shoplifters to catch a month. It's fairly easy.

I am there, paid to do a job, if I don't like it fine I can leave. But wait... there's really no other work out there right now. If you don't like it then leave, there is plenty of other people who would be glad to work!

I watch all the associates who BS around, do nothing and complain how boring it is. How they hate the work. "Why did you apply?" I watch and listen to the JR's girls who always complain of having to put Z-Racks away... OMG, work... what will I do, I can't sit back and do nothing, gossip and "FB" while I should work. Wait... do I smell time fraud? I think so... Macy's is much better than several other jobs I use to do. Including Fast Food, and janitorial!

Hate away!

Don't get their credit card because of "deals and coupons" because they ALWAYS have a huge list of exclusions! I don't know who has the time to check all of their purchases with the coupons to see if it is included. The coupons would be great if I could use them.

I have been working for Macy's for 8 years. This company is like many other large retailers. Credit is the most important thing for this company. At our store we have to open 12 accounts/month per associate. It is like any other retailer almost impossible to get time off from work during holidays for obvious reasons. I open about 12 accounts per month. I do that by asking pretty much everybody if they want a Macys card. Sales is important but not as important as in Stores like Dillards. And Macys has the best sales so even in your slow departments you usually make your sales. I have never had to have talks with my manager about sales and I am not even an aggressive sales associate. I am actually more passive. I like the customer to ask me rather then me chasing them all over the store.
Managers are also ok. They might be a little annoying about the credit card push but thats because they get an ear full by their manager ( store manager ) if their department don't meet their credit quota.
I honestly think Macys is pretty laid back. I am going to work with "I work as hard as they pay me" No more no less.

Ok, here is the deal. I have read several complaints about Macy's and how bad the customer service is, working conditions and the fact that they make their employees push credit. The funny thing about all of this is half these people start out with "I worked for Macy's for 5 years and..." First thing is, if the company is that bad and they treated you so poorly...you're a moron for sticking around. I loathe all the whining coming from sales people stating "oh no, the company is actually making me work for a living." They made me do my job and ask customers if they wanted a Macy's card instead of sitting around and gossiping all day while I ignore customers. This is a corporation and like any other job, it is what you make it. You have expectations that are usually spelled out for you during the interview process but can't hack it when it comes to walking the walk. If you don't like the job, then quit...you're probably not right for the organization anyways. All day long all I hear is "they are taking away this and they are changing that." Guess what...in a climate like this, NO company can afford to operate in the same manner it does and furthermore, if there is one thing you can ALWAYS count on...it's change! My advice is, if you want a job, can provide good customer service and sell the Macy's card as a benefit to the customer, you've got a career. If you want to bitch and moan about how the management and everyone is against you so you can justify doing a crappy job, go look for something else and quit wasting the company's time. Those that do Do and those that don't complain. My advice is...be lucky you have a job at all and if someone is giving you opportunities where you are struggling, fix it or get the hell out. No one is forcing you to stick around. Now that I am off my soapbox, Macy's is a great department store with awesome value and quality merchandise. I have always had a good experience with Macy's. Yes they ask me every time if I want to open a Macy's card but that's anywhere I go and I simply tell them no and move on. Where the hell else are you really going to go? JC Penney is about a half step up from Ross and Nordstrom is a total rip off with not that much better customer service. It's so funny when I hear people swear off Macy's for life and see them two days later in the store shopping away. Bottom line, cut the crap and get a life. Macy's rocks!

registered for my wedding- the online tracker was helpful to keep track- and generally retuning items was easy. Also registered for my silver- that was a large mistake. One place setting cost 150-200 more then a local store in La Jolla CA- so we are not talking discount store. Tried to use a 20% discount on some silver items. The order was canceled twice. The first time I got an email 2 weeks after the cancellation. After replacing the order and not having received the items 2 weeks after they were supposed to be shipped and 2 months after the order was placed - I called and found out it was canceled 1 weeks after I placed the order. Nice that I had to call to find out it was canceled 7 weeks earlier for the SECOND time.

Note:Macy's not always cheaper the Neimans- and online and store prices are not the some. Online my waterford glasses were $60 at Neimans vs $70 at Macy's.

If you asked me 2 days ago it would be 5 stars. I told them I wanted a career with them. I would stay at low pay for however how long. I have a degree and have stayed with the company for 2 long years, never missed one day, and I am disabled and take the bus to work. During Christmas I worked 68 hours per week and remained their credit star for two years. yesterday because of cutbacks they fired me!

I've worked for Macy's now for 3 years and Kaufmanns before that so all together I've been there almost 11 years. Right now it's a job that pays my bills. But it's the worst company I've ever worked for in my life. They took away everything from the associates. The black dress code is a little crazy. It looks like someone is in morning. But who can afford a new black dress code on the salary that they offer to there employees. I can tell you some horrible shit that happens in our store. The merchandise sucks ,that's if there is any. They want to be America's Department store well guess what you can't do that without stuff to sell. This company doesn't care about there employees at all and never will. With the economy the way it is. of course they had to make cuts and not give raises for the second year in a row. Which I think is wrong for the employees that actually go to work everyday and bust there ass. It doesn't matter how hard you work or what you achieve, if the company does poorly well so do you!!But did everyone now that works for this lovely company , now that TERRY LUNDGREN
still got his 6 DIGIT bonus!!!! They had to make cuts just so he could get his money!! It was on CNN! I wanted to reach through the screen and rip someones head off!

Macy's is very disappointing and absolutely unbearable. It does not matter how good their items and products are. Their horrifying customer service is absolutely NOT OK! The associate who was working with me did not even bother to crack a smile or even act like she was happy to serve me. And when I asked to see a different color of the Coach bag I was going to buy, she COMPLAINED! I ask her to do something, and she complains. Absolutely rude and NOT OK! I go into Macy's hoping to get some hospitable service and I am met with a lady who starts PMSing on me. If she hasn't noticed yet, I AM THE CUSTOMER and she justs happens to be some middle aged woman who still has to work at Macy's. Oh, and somehow I got myself signed up for a Macy's card without knowing it. Macy's is very disappointing and obviously blind when they hire workers. If you need a good place to shop, Nordstroms or something else would do WAY better. Anything but Macy's. *barf*

I am working at Macy's, I was a sales associate and now I am getting promoted. As any other place, there are bad parts, but if you are smart enough to see the good parts also, it's a great place to learn about retail and to build a career.
ANd to those, too many, who only complain on this forum, if you are not happy, if you think you are better, if you think you can do better, then be better, do better. Macy's is not putting a gun at your head to work here.

About getting loyalties open, all the big retailers are doing it. ANd there is a reason for it - increase traffic in the stores, tracking customers' purchases so the retailers can better cater to their preferences and needs.

About staying to do recovery - no manager expects the associates to clean during the peak hours when they help customers, moreover, most managers will actually pitch in for recovery and fitting room duties during those hours. But managers do expect some activity when there are no customers - and don't tell me there is never the case! Macy's (and for that matter, nobody) pays anyone to idle around.

And about the "greedy" macys wanting to make as much of a profit as it can. Helloooo, what world are you guys living on? Macy's is a corporation, macy's executives do answer to the shareholders, and in order to stay in business, they have to think business first. Maybe if Marshall's Fields and other stores had been more efficient, they would still be around.

I "worked" at Macy's this holiday season. First of all I was told about the all black dress code, which was fine because I would supposedly get a 60% discount on my first suit. Of course none of the suits they had were in my size, so I went to JcPenny's and bought it there. Secondly, the training was horrendous. I can't understand what weak minded employee would be brainwashed by thier credit card push.
My final worst moment was their online schedule system. I use Mozilla Firefox as a browser, and their schedule did not read properly. Too bad I didn't find this out until I got a call from them about me not being at work. Of course I offered to leave the family gathering I was at, and head over to work albeit late. However, I was greeted with a "No thats fine, I don't want to interrupt your gathering", in a very snotty wording. I was not scheduled for the remainder of my "employement". This is a terrible company, and I hope they realize that soon and fix their management.

Macy's makes no sense and the employees think they are FBI agents. I loved May company when it was Foleys. But this mess of a store does not work. They have the employees programmed to say strange memorized dialogue. They look at you strange when you dont want their help. The is no logic behind the way the store is set up. Its just depressing. I will never set foot in another Macy's.

My wife and I went to Macy's (Cherry Creek Mall in Denver) today so that I could get the band on my Christmas present watch adjusted. We walked up to the watch counter and were told that we had to go the Citizen watch area to have the work done. No one at that counter. Waited for 3 minutes and still no one. My wife goes off to find someone (because she knows that I am not happy) and 4 minutes later returns with a "sales associate" who removes some links from my watch band. I have no idea how Macy's stays in business. If I had been seeking to PURCHASE a watch, I would have given up and left the store.

I can sympathize with all the previous employees of Macy's. I worked for the company for almost 7 years. (I started in 2001 when it was Marshall Field's). Marshall Field's was a great company to work for and we were actually told that nothing was going to change. EVERYTHING changed!! A huge step back in technology, lack in quality merchandise, down to the cheap bags that always ripped to no gift boxes, no package pick up service....the list goes on.
Heres a list of the bullsh*t that Macys is about.
1) The push for credit - It wasn't even about selling products anymore - it is all about "selling the card". If you didn't make your credit goals, you would be reprimanded and told you had to or you would have to go to "credit university" where they pressure you even more to open charges. It's all about "how to overcome the objection" to get the charge because let's face it, they make money off of the credit card, not even off of selling merchandise anymore.

2)Managers undermine the sales associates at every turn just to please the customer - even if it is returning products that were years old and used (a coffee maker that we hadn't sold in years that still had coffee grounds in it!) and I had to give them a brand new one! Shame on the customer for pulling a stunt like that and shame on the company for bending their own policies and in the end, making the sales associate look bad when they were just adhereing to the policies of the company!
3) Managers do not manage - I was constantly harassed by another co-worker who caused trouble where ever she went and my manager did nothing about it...there are similar situations going on like that now and management does nothing.
4)**Most important** There was hardly any talk anymore about great customer service (the old "Go, Be Great, be Green" of Marshall Field's was sooooo awesome (even though at the time I thought it was cheesy) but it really stood for company pride. At Marshall Field's we had to immediatly drop what we were doing to greet a customer and offer assistance and that was great because it showed the customer we were there to help and Macy's is nothing like that. In fact, I went in there the other day to say hello to an old co-worker and walked by tons of employees and not one said hello or, "Can I help you find something" or anything....disgraceful. You expect that at other places but not there.

I could go on- but I don't want to write a book. Not that anyone here might care, but I quit there and got a great job that I really enjoy and I don't have the stress that I used to have when I was working for Macy's. I would literally dread going to work when I finally had it and moved on. I get weekends off now (which, for anyone who works in retail, is AWESOME!) I used to be scheduled to work 10 days in a row without a day off at Macys'!) I still have a lot of friends there and hear that things are still bad, if not worse.

Please go to www.fieldsfanschicago.org. It's a great website and hopefully something good will happen in the future!

Macys is a horrible place to work. I have been employed with them for 8 years now. I took the job as a part-time sales associate to supplement my income. Fortunately, I have a full time job or I would have shot myself. I was a Kaufmanns employee who was merged into Macys in 2006. Macys preached how everything was going to be the same and that after we became Macys it was going to be a better place to work and shop. Well, they didnt even have the Kaufmanns name off of the building and here we had to start circling the sales receipts about the online survey and put our name on each receipt so the customer could comment on the survey and we HAD to tell each customer to rate us OUTSTANDING otherwise we would get in trouble. Right after the 2006 Christmas season ended, here comes Macys filled with changes. The store where I worked at had its management staff cut in half. The employee discount was changed from 25% to 20%. Paper handle shopping bags were removed and replaced with cheap plastic bags, Gift boxes were removed from wrap desks. Not to long after came the re-assignment of some sales associates who were put on sign and merchandising crews and if you didnt want it, well there was the door. Kaufmanns never pressured its employees on hourly sales or instant credit goals. All of a sudden, there were posters down the hallways near the customer restrooms that showed how well each associate performed in obtaining new credit accounts. Then came the black dress codeplease I was a part-time sales associate making 7.80 an hour and I was told you now must change your entire wardrobe to black. I dont even have a black dress code at my day job. The worst came at the end of 2007 when the sales goals got way out of control. Macys came up with individual and team goals so no matter how hard you worked at making your goal, if the team didnt make the goal, guess what, no one did and it affected your raise! Go figure-- Finally, I said I had enough so I told them I was quitting and they said that they didnt want me to leave so I stupidly agreed to work one day a week (Tuesday or Wednesday nights). After three months I was pulled aside and consulted about my lack of new credit account openings and how my sales were down. How many people do you know who shop on a Tuesday or Wednesday night? I went to sign the coaching paperwork and also completed a letter of resignation. The next day, the store manager calls me and tells me that he wants me to work as an On-Call associate where I wouldnt have a set schedule and I could agree or refuse to work. I thought this sounded good and I still could keep my discount and seniority. Guess what, I was called every week and when I politely declined to work, I was told that I was not a team player and given a hard time about not wanting to work. The one time I did work, I was told I had to clean and dust (in black clothing of course) and then at the end of my shift I was questioned why I didnt make my sales and new account goals. They have tried to call me to work this holiday season and even scheduled me when I told them I couldnt work. I really miss Kaufmanns no one knew how good it was until the big M took over-- Macys does NOT care about their employees. All they care about is pushing their credit program until the customer either walks away or yells at you

Terry Lundgrun is living in a big bubble. The merger between May Company and Macys should NEVER have been allowed. I rate Macy's a 1 star because I can't go less, otherwise I would give them a big fat ZERO!

Watch out for unauthorized charges if you open a Macy's card. I gave them my credit card info and SPECIFICALLY asked them to put the purchase there and not on Macy's card. Still, they did it and after few months they charged me penalty fees equal twice the item I purchased.

Called the customer service many times. No help at all. They only pushed me to make the payment.

Will never put a foot in Macy's store and all of you also STAY AWAY from those cheaters.

Macy's has taken over so many department stores...Robinsons, etc, and now Macy's sucks...they offer no value compared to what Robinsons had. They have gotten too big and over their heads. They used to be decent, with lots of online promotions, etc. You can still print online coupons, but there are so many 'catches', that it's not even worth the ink and paper on your printer. They suck big time.

I felt compelled to write this, as I am a former employee.  It takes a lot to make me angry, and even more to make me write something (this is the first review I have ever done).  I worked a few years ago in the North Shore Mall Macy's in MA, and I had a wonderful time.  My work was seasonal, though, and I was laid off after the holidays.

Based on my previous experience, I applied to the Macy's at a different mall and was hired.  I was initially offered a full-time position in Juniors at $8.50 an hour, but I declined and opted for a part-time position in handbags.  I went to the sales floor days after I was hired, and was to 'shadow' a fellow employee.  This employee, "C" took numerous breaks, leaving me alone on the floor.  She ignored me when I asked her questions, grabbed items from my hands, and took off constantly without letting me know.

That aggravated me, but I just brushed it aside.  My first two weeks, I was being shuffled around to different departments because of call outs.  I am a very hard worker and often do more than I am asked, and I truly felt they took advantage of me.  I was hired as part-time and ended up working close to 40 hours, with no full-time benefits.

My biggest issue was with credit.  As soon as I would walk through the employee entrance, before I punched in, two or three different managers would greet me and tell me I needed to open up charges.  They would keep talking about how important it was, how they were counting on me and depending on it, all before I set down my purse.

Some of these methods we were supposed to use to open up charges were borderline unethical, and some were downright sickening and illegal.  We were told to offer cards, and if the customer told us that they had one, we were to try to get them to open a joint account with their mothers, daughters, friends, etc.  Some employees confessed to even opening joint accounts for people who were not present and did not consent.

Another method that was commonly used by employees and sometimes by managers, was to open up multiple accounts for a person under the premise that the customer just needed a picture ID and some information to process the transaction.

Employees would blatantly use these tactics, and managers knew about them, and nothing was done.  In fact, this was encouraged, and  employees who didn't open up enough accounts were held to the same expectations as those using those unethical tactics.

Also, I was frustrated because the managers would sometimes watch us with customers and rate how we were.  We were supposed to introduce ourselves and ask for the customer's name.  Then we had to offer other items for them to purchase (at least 2) and ask them if they had a Macy's card.  We had to circle and sign the Macy's survey at the bottom of the receipt.  Finally, we had to walk the customer's bag to them and shake their hand.  I felt this was overkill, and completely ridiculous.  Frankly, I was embarrassed.  I had a customer tell me that she felt the same way, and that it was "incredibly lame".  We would get bad reviews if we didn't do this each and every time.  My manager came over and put extreme pressure on me, in front of a customer, to do this.  The customer felt uncomfortable with all this dramatic overkill and I felt completely mortified.

Yet another problem was the fact that associate discounts could only be taken with a Macy's card or a pay-as-you-go card.  What I found extremely deceitful was the fact that I had to fill out an application for a credit card even though I didn't want one.  I told the HR manager this, and he insisted that it wouldn't be processed as a credit inquiry.  Sure enough, after checking my credit report sometime later, it was.

The whole atmosphere was terrible.  I quit within two months.  What got to me was that they wanted me to pick up extra hours and kept calling me while I was on vacation to come in.  I was a part-time employee making $ .50 above minimum wage!  I had it, and I got out.

I just really had to share my story...I have a million more but not enough time to write them all!

So, if you ever have the experience where a cashier tells you that the discount for the coupon (In my case a "spend at least $50 then get $20 off" coupon) you used won't show up on the receipt but will show up on your Macy's bill...DON'T BELIEVE THEM. The only reason I did was because it had happened once before and the discount did show up on the bill. But I realized that while that's fine if it works out, you are completely screwed if that discount does not show up on your bill. A: I signed the receipt saying I would pay the amount shown ($56 rather than $36 if the coupon had been applied). B: They take the coupon after you use it. C: You've already worn the clothes by the time that undiscounted bill arrives and can no longer return them. Customer Service says the only way that this can be resolved is to go to the specific store (an hour away) that I bought the items from, and plead my case. GREAT customer service, Macy's. Really. Excellent.

I was recently fired from Macys in bellingmah, WA due to a customer complaint, which was completly untrue, she claimed I was swearing and cursing her, which I never did, I was polite and patient, and i was talking to my co-worker to loudly while she was being rung up, they sent me home early and i had to talk to HR the next morning, needless to say they don't even consider the employees side of the story, or care, its all about the customer, one complaint can get you fired, regardless of whether or not it's even true, they want to "protect their image" when in reality all their doing is making it worse. No wonder they're dieing for new hires this season.

What they want out of their employees is perfection, no less, they tell us this daily, I told them to let me know if they ever found it.

I was recently dismissed from Macy's in Southern California. Why? Because their loss prevention and managment are incompetent. There was a certain customer that our store had for several months. She would make her purchases and be on her way. No problem. Until she started to bring back purchases to get discounts later than she should have. I had informed loss prevention of her actions time and time again, nothing happened. I told my supervisor. She did nothing but tell me to call loss prevention when the customer was in. I did so. My point is, I was let go due to a customer who was doing wrong. Why? I really don't know. The only thing I can see is that Macy's wanted to cover their asses because they were not paying attention as they should have been. When one manager actually said to call when the client was in, she too, was too busy most of the time to come down and observe the client or help them herself. So, yeah. In conclusion these people are lazy and they just dont care to what links you will go to make a sale, but once their butts are in a ringer, its your job not theirs.
Sad, but true.

I worked at Macy's twice - both times for 6 months. It was one of the worst jobs I ever had. The first time I worked there I was getting paid minimum wage with commission. The commission was nearly impossible to make. I had to sell $1,050 in 7 hours and anything over that amount was when I would make my commission. I was hired shortly after 9/11 so no one was really doing too much shopping. Needless to say, I hardly ever made commission and when I did it would simply go toward the negative balance I had for the previous day when business was slow. The way they had it set up was ridiculous. The only people who ever made commission were the ones who never helped put back clothes but instead would hog all the customers for themselves. I even had other sales associates steal customers from me. I worked full time for a while, but when I asked for benefits, my hours got cut. I was told I wasn't opening enough credit cards to be hired full time. I always felt bad trying to stuff those things down people's throats.

The next time I worked there, there was no commission, just an hourly rate. Which was good in a way - but we were still monitored on how much we sold. And they wouldn't let you sign in early, or sign out late unless you had to do recovery. Most of the time I worked in the department by myself. Which meant I was often the only one putting back all the clothes, and cashing out all 4 registers. I got to the point where I hated the company and wouldn't even attempt to sell the credit cards, or try to catch a customer stealing. I figured I was already being overworked and underpaid, why should I have to open credit and be a security guard too? This company only cares about making a profit and will do so at the expense of its employees. I hope they go out of business very soon - they don't deserve the hard work that the sales people put in, and they don't deserve to have people shopping there.

Macy's does indeed suck. I worked for them for about 5 years in their loss prevention department. They fucked me over big time. I recorded a conversation between myself and one of their big wigs harrassing me. When they found out I recorded the conversation which I had every right to. Two of the top security managers physicaly took the tape from me. Then their lawyer, completed asshole gets on the phone with me and says they're keeping the tape and I need to leave the store. Kiss my royal Irish ass you pricks. Don't ever let any of their security people question about shit. Tell them you're sick and need to go. You can also request a Human Resource associate be there at the time of questioning it's your right. Tell them you'll write out your own statement. They don't want that but then again fuck them and their wants.

Macys VISA used to give free shipping to its Platinum card holders. The way it worked is they would credit you on your credit card bill every month for the delivery charges. Then this month, my bill arrives, and NO CREDITS FOR SHIPPING. This, in spite of the fact, that the bill says I have 12 services available to apply to gift wrap or DELIVERY CHARGES. I call Macys credit card customer service where I was told that they had discontinued the free shipping for Platinum card members program in May 2008. Not only was I never notified of this change, but THE BILLING STATEMENT STILL SAYS PLATINUM MEMBERS GET FREE SHIPPING. So, they were either engaging in misleading advertising or just blatantly lying to me. In the end, the manager on duty only offered to credit us for partial shipping. I have NEVER had a problem with the free shipping program for Platinum members, so I guess when the tide goes out (slow economy), all the ugliness surfaces. I average at least $5000/yr at Macy's and Macys.com combined. So, Macy's, you screwed me for $12.95 and you're probably going to get away with it. But, you also just lost a $5000/yr customer. Put it another way, the future value annuitized value of my lifetime purchases at Macys is worth $100,000 to you. Way to go. Good job. Hope you like your $12.95.

I purchased Macy's "Hotel Collection" towels back in December 2007. Within 3 months almost all of the towels were discolored as if someone poured bleach on them. We do not use pure bleach in our laundry. Infrequently we use color safe bleach so I thought this could be the cause.

I decided to give the towels another try assuming that our laundering ruined the towels. I purchased the same "Macy's Hotel Collection" towels in another color 2 months ago and have been very careful w/the laundering. The same discoloration occurred again. Looks like someone poured bleach on the center of the towel. The dye has faded significantly over about 3/4 of the towel.

Anyone else have this problem? Is it me or Macy's?

I just started at a Macy's, mostly because I just needed any job at all. The dress code of black this and that, with three layers, well I had to take out a loan to pay rent, just to get clothes to wear that was uniform (I also just shopped in thrift stores and Ross if I have to), I don't actually buy from Macy's because I'd rather find a quality bargain. I don't hate the store, my mom used to buy stuff in there when I was growing up, but I think they need to be honest and not lie to their workers.(Both of my parents run their own companies, so I think they do not realize how well I know the game plan.

I had one day of training class, then the next day a few hours of sitting on a computer trying to brainwash me (I also knew more on how to use a computer then the HR lady...)before my manager scooped me up and thrust me up onto the floor, I said "I haven't been trained in POS or the safety!" so she let me ghost for the day. The associate I worked with was very frosty, and extreemly pissed that I couldn't log on and cover her kind of woman, ha- she says condescendingly "I sympathize with you, but do not tell anyone -I- said that."

gargh ...If they spent the time to show me the register and how to use the key commands maybe I would have been more productive instead of spending my hours cleaning the floor, and restocking. In fact, how about they just hire me for that. My friend told me most likely they do this to all new hires and you have three days to figure it all out or they fire you. Great training there!

Macy's well what can I say that hasn't been said already. Terrible/rude service both online and in store. I read some employee responses below and I was horrified how the employees are treated. No wonder they are so miserable! Don't purchase anything from Macy's and your life will be that much better. I have no clue why this poor excuse of a store still has it's doors open. Horrible at every level from the merchandise to service, rude employees not wanting to do THEIR JOBS etc. I WILL NEVER SHOP Macy's or Macys.com EVER AGAIN!

The sales people are snoody, condesending and overly pushy with their stupid credit cards. I don't hate many people or things in this

I enjoy the selection and the great sales. I do not enjoy the high pressure pitch at the cashier station to sign up for a store card. No means NO!!!!!

I will continue to shop there because of the selection and the excellent merchandising. But when I get to the counter, I say quickly, "Thank you, but no. I do NOT want to sign up for a Macys card." This saves me about a minute of time because they only ask me again 2 times instead of 3. lol

I had called in advance and spoke to someone who was cordial enough and was told that 1)there was a shiseido counter and 2)although there was no one working there at the moment any of the fine ladies in the neighboring counters would be pleased to help me find the right color foundation for my skin. Seeing how I very often get home to find that I look too orange or too pale I decided to go to the store with no make-up on at all. So, looking quite shabby and frustratingly a lot younger than I am I hurried to the cosmetics department, dodging any other passersby so they would not be shocked at my unkempt face. Finding the counter empty like I was told it would be, I approached three saleswomen at the Elizabeth Arden neighboring counter talking. Standing there and not wanting to be rude and interrupt, I say as cheerfully as I can "Excuse me, I was wondering if one of you ladies could give me a little make-over at the shiseido counter". All three, arms crossed, scoffed (actually gave indignant laughs), looked at each other, no one willing to budge, quickly replied "we don't do that here". Shocked and winded, I'm sure my eyes bulged a bit at such a catty response and my mouth was frozen in an awkward now-fake smile. Thinking back at what I must look like, haggard, too young to possibly buy any substantial amount in their eyes (not to mention asian features) I felt a humiliating pinch in my stomach and tried to hold back any tears that tend to accompany total utter embarrassment. As I stood there, looking from face to face, unsure of the correct response, one of these women said "here, maybe .... would want to help you" and took me to another lady (asian if that shows anything) and introduced me in a scoffing tone as "this young lady wants to know if you want to give her a facial massage"...Turning red and beginning to sweat with frustration I quickly respond (stammering) "No, I wanted to know if you could help me find the right shade for my skin" and her reply was to sign me up for some shiseido session and to pointedly ask "if you're going to cancel on us, please call first". Numb with surprise, I awkwardly try to walk into the mall and recover but get lost in the department store and flusteringly have to walk past these women again to find the mall entrance. Unable to find the restroom I just keep walking until I find myself in Dillards, my eyes already starting to water. A kind woman asked if I was alright and consoled me and when my eyes cleared again I found that she had a name-tag on. She actually worked in the cosmetics department! So she gave me a friendly and informative mini-session, simply helping me find the correct shade in foundation and neutralizing my now-puffy eyes. Having the intention on buying a whole new set of cosmetics that day, I immediately picked out the pieces that I needed. And I also signed up for another consultation in a few weeks. She gave me quite a bit of samples and I already know which items work for me. On my way out of the mall, I had to go back through Macy's because that's the side of the mall that I parked in and I stopped by to cancel my session with them (very politely might I add). I'm a cardholder to Macy's and this horrible horrible experience at the Collin Creek location makes me embarrassed for Macy's. I used to love Macy's, and honestly was more than willing to buy all my needs there. But at least at this mall, I'm going to start taking all my business to Dillards and will tell all my friends and family to do the same. The sad part is that I'm not even exaggerating, it's appalling how this could happen.

Macy's STINKS
There should be a way to give negative stars to a company.
I placed an order at Macys in good faith, for a ceramic figurine.
I wanted it as a gift for someone. The price the site had was $50.
The order was placed on 8/15 and I got a confirmation email from Macys
about my order. Then on 8/22 I discover, part of my order has been
canceled by Macy's (without anyone bothering to inform me). So I spent lord knows how much time on the phone with their credit dept., which was a total waste of time.
The gentleman first told me he does not see anything in my order as reason for cancellation and that he will put back the figurine for $50 and waive the shipping cost and that it will ship on 9/3. I said OK, even though my order confirmation email had the ship date as 8/26. Then he informs me that the order cannot be completed, the price now is $355 and if that makes me unhappy, he will give me a 20% promo code for my misery (not exactly his words, but the sentiment was the same). I should have told him what he could do with the 20%. I asked him why was part of my order canceled, for which he had no answer and told me that the order was voided on 8/20, 5 days after I placed my order.
I want to know, if Macy's can just cancel my order without informing me. Shouldn't there be some law, that company has to inform the customer first ?

I now work at Macys West. Worked at Macys South for a while before this one. I am leaving Macys for good. Gah, what is with this company? The store I work for treat their great employees like shit. Its all about CREDIT, CREDIT, CREDIT!!They don't care if you sell a million dollars worth of their shit, if you don't get credits, they don't want you! Our manager is a little weasel. He makes little idle threats to us employees. Like threatening to cut hours, or take away a position. I only work at Macys because of a little extra money. No big deal. Im also a grown woman, and I have a little 20-something wannabe spying on me to grade how I check people out. Then when I'm done he pulls me over to tell me what I've done wrong. Whats worse if the Loss Prevention team is AWFUL! They never come out of their room to catch the theives!! NEVER! MY other store was always catching people! But yet this stores LP is always coming around snooping in our drawers looking for candy, mints, etc. and writing up hard working associates if they don't ask for ID during a transaction. Maybe if they put that much emphasis on the people who steal, the store would be a lot richer. I am done with this company FOR GOOD.

I worked for Macy's for 6 months and was hurt moving furniture. As I was told to do. Asked for a back brace and was told they don't have any, stupid me moved the furniture anyway. At any rate I was hurt and have been laid up ever since. That was 9 months ago. They keep giving me the run around saying there is no way I could have hurt my self at work. But I am the one paying for it. I ended up getting a lawyer and as soon as I am able to return to work I will start looking for another job. As even at the store level they are giving me Sh**. This is a horrible company to work for. I worked for another large retail company for 7 years and I just got bored with them so I moved on. What A mistake. Macy's training sucks and so does there upper management. I can't wait to get back to work so I can find another job.!!!!!

Wow. I knew I wasn't alone when I read all the negative comments. I worked for Lord & Taylor for four years..it's like night and day compared to Macy's..L & T actually took an interest in their people. I also worked for McAlpins/Bacon's which were Mercantile stores. Macy's, like (shudder) Wal-Mart, is trying to take over the world. Their out of control greed with the credit card is shameless and they don't pay well. The management is usually bitter and angry..or young and inexperienced and being turned into their zombies...I could go on and on. I had a dream recently that the department stores that Macy's swallowed up had returned..Marshall Fields, Foley's, etc. Just another example of American corporate greed. Even when it was Lazarus/Federated it was better..they paid better..had better staffed stores, etc. I briefly thought about going back into the retail world but after working at a Macy's as a part-timer I really don't even want to continue that. I don't know what the answer is and it will continue to be this way until they start to go down the tubes..which I hope is soon. Ugh.

I ordered 2 personalized gift cards with my logo on it on 6/3 for an event I'm hosting on 6/26/08. I paid extra for the personalization and a delivery charge which included $6.10 for personalization and a $3.90 shipping fee.

As of 6/19, I did not receive the cards, so I contacted Macys.com through email as customer service provides and asked for a tracking number. They could not provide me with such because I'm assuming they never actually sent the cards out. Their response that they will send replacement cards. I just received an email that they are sending two REGULAR cards without my logo in the mail on 6/26! Which not only misses my event date but also does not include my logo. WHY DID I PAY EXTRA for regular cards? I could have just gotten them at a local macys!

On top of that, I told them to refund my money, and the refunded me $4! FOUR DOLLARS?!?! What is that?

Merchandise Total: $20.00
Standard Shipping: $3.90

Gift/Personalization Fee: $6.10
Sales Tax: $0.70
Order Total: $30.70

Amount Tendered: ---
$30.70
