One of those guys who was well above average in every aspect but not exactly truly outstanding in everything either. Never seemed to fit with the Yankees, for some reason, he's much easier to picture as an icon of a small market club like the one he started out with- The Padres. Terrific athlete, drafted by three pro teams. I liked him as a player and he seemed like a pretty classy guy. I thought Steinbrenner's investigation of him was pretty low- even by that monomaniacal sphincter's standard.. . Fine player, but although a credible HOF'er, not among the top 92 ever.

Winfield has impressive career statistics, but looking back on him it just never seemed that he lived up to what he could have been. He was a complete player who could do anything required of him, but his propensity for coming up short in the clutch while with the Yankees led George Steinbrenner to give him the nickname "Mr.May". There is little doubt that he belongs in the Hall of Fame, but Winfield is a step below the elite players like Aaron, Frank Robinson, Ruth, or Cobb.

Dave Winfield shouldn't be on this list.
