I have a 2000 GT Avalanche that I bought on sale for $900. I put over 1000 rough miles on it (500 last summer), and it has held up very well. It has only required the regular maintenance and replacement parts (tires, rear derailleur, cables, chain, cassette), and I'm confident it will take me through a 1000 mile summer when the snow melts... very happy with it!

It is a good bike for the money. It has been sold for around $1,000. It can come with excellent components. Rockshox suspension is okay.

I've been very pleased with my GT. I didn't want to spend a ton on a mountain bike but I certainly wanted one that would stand up to test and my GT certainly did just that. I spent a month and 1,200 miles in Mexico on my GT loaded down with about 50lbs on the rack and it never let me down and I was riding on some pretty poor roads. In fact the only thing that let me down was the rack (blackburn)everything else held up and is still holding up. I've been very impressed and wouldn't hesitate to buy another.

The solid single frame construction provides a strong but durable bike. I also like the brake style which insures stopping power and derailers that are there when you need to change gears.

I gave this bike a four because I'm not really into mountain bikes, but I know they have different gears that help a person ride easier.
