Before Grain is a pretty new product from the Merrick company, which is a pretty solid company that has dealt mostly with dog food in the past.
They've created the "Before Grain" line as a food that contains no grains as the title suggests. As a natural cat diet doesn't require grains, these tend to be the absolute best foods.
Unlike other "no grain" foods such as Orijen and Wellness CORE, it isn't super loaded with proteins. For instance, the percent of protein is around 50% at the aforementioned foods, but about 35% in this food. This isn't BAD persay, but if you have an active cat you may want to consider a higher protein food for the energy. If you have a lazy housecat like me, then this will work.
The downsides are two-fold...which I guess you can't blame them for. The first is that it's pretty dang expensive, but given the quality ingredients, that isn't hard to understand. Secondly, it's harder to find than most. Specialty pet food stores will carry it, but the major retailers will not. That's a good rule of thumb, though...if you can find it in a major store, it probably isn't that great of a product.
So give it a try....I'll bet your kitty will love it.
