I'm flabbergasted by the positive reviews and BS claims about Saddam Hussein and the reasoning for his brutal actions. There is way too much indisputable evidence that this man is a lunatic murderer, and much of it was aired by liberal network shows before they decided to, by virtue of agenda and political ideology, turn against the war. Americans really need to read the goddamn newspaper more and study their history, and foreigners should inform themselves on the whole Iraq situation before making ignorant comments about how America is imperialist, which we aren't. I just came back from Canada and I've had to put up with so many ignorant comments from my relatives and acquaintances about America, and I'm tired. The same happened to me in Australia, Trinidad and Barbados. To many people, the idea that Bush and America are like Darth Vader and the Evil Empire is too irresistable to pass up. Sorry to ruin the party, but Iraq was long overdue to be toppled. I can't imagine how anyone could read up on the history of Saddam's regime on Wikipedia or anywhere else and not feel utter contempt for the man.

Ok, in light of recent events I had to revise my rating. This guy is terrible, in every way you can think of. He brutalized his people, then could not protect them or his own neck. Exactly what was his war strategy? This guy was a threat and danger to the world? LOL Has he provided us any useful info?

Saddam is many things to many people. What is true is the fact that he lead the most secular and FREE state in the Middle East. True, it was not a democracy like France or Germany. But, either was it Saudi Arabia. Saddam was a tough but fair leader I believe and he kept his country safe. Up until 2003, Iraq was one of the safest countries to visit (unless you interfered in internal politics of course). It was and is a shame what they are doing to Saddam. Just because they can't get the REAL villain (Bin Laden and co.), Bush and co. go for the easy option and settle an old dispute for personal reasons. Invading Iraq was an insult to all that died in 9/11. And as for those who think Iraq would be better off without Saddam, just listen to the news!

I adore him! So what if he's a power-hungry, promiscuous megalomaniac? Saddam is a truly strong (and not to mention, secular) leader. A man as great as him does not come often, and Saddam should be honored! It is very obvious that those 'bash' him have been listening to underhanded American propaganda for far too long. ~ Saddam's performance in the USA's funhouse-court was refreshing; his words ring true. He has shown us once more his ability to persevere under the most difficult of circumstances, and I can only hope that his followers in Iraq will find as much inspiration in his recent appearances as I did.

Saddam Hussein had great dreams of glory for Iraq, indeed, he saw himself as something of a latter day Nebuchenezzar, the ancient Babylonian emperor who ruled the Middle East. Here was a man who was born to rural poverty only rise in the Ba'ath party network to prominence. In a way, it was a stroke of luck that he made it alive and to the top, considering that politics in that part of the world is literally a blood sport. He became President of Iraq in 1979 and subsiquently began foreign wars of conquest in Iran and Kuwait respectively. Saddam's had two real goals in starting both the Iran-Iraq war and the Kuwait war. One was to establish a reliable connection to the Persian Gulf to ship out petroleum. The second was to consolidate his control over Iraq by invoking nationalism; there is obviously a personal component to this, he wanted to personify himself as a great military commander. Truth of the matter is, like his personal hero Josef Stalin, his medling in military matters ended up costing his army dearly. Still, even after Iran and Persian Gulf War he managed to hold on to power by way of mass massacre of his political opponents. Whole groups of people were subjected to genocide; witness his gassing of the Kurds in 1988 in retaliation of support for Iran or his repression of the Southern Marsh Arabs, who were suspected of rising against the regime after Persian Gulf War. The US supported Saddam through the 1980's in his war against Iran; we supplied him with weapons during that period. We were not exactly friendly with Iraq, but we did have diplomatic relations. Saddam attacked Kuwait with the understanding that the US would stay out of the conflict, another misreading of international politics. Saddam had the potential of de-stabilizing oil markets throughout the Middle East as a result of his plans of expansion in the region. As a result we rid Kuwait of the Iraqi army in 1991 and proceeded to establish a deterrent presence in the region to check Saddam's army. Saddam continued to rule with an iron fist, but deterrence de-fanged Saddam; even if he had weapons, he would have been unable to attack Israel or any other Arab country for that matter. The security threat was minimal, links to terrorism were weak; indeed there are other states that sponsor more terrorism than Saddam. The primary reason why we invaded Iraq in 2003 was that Iraq has began trading petroleum in euros rather than dollars; the thinking went that we needed to pre-empt this move towards establishing the euro as an oil transaction standard. We invaded primarily to establish control of these oil fields to give us leverage against OPEC when dealing with the Europeans. The wisdom of this strategy was weak in that the movement in foreign government funds towards the Euro has actually increased; in the long term, we weaken our position by not negotiating a currency band to trade oil for currency. But enough about macroeconomic policy; this is about Saddam. Really the public reasons to liberate Iraq were to liberate the people and to destroy Saddam's WMD program. The first count was a noble goal, but ultimately it's not our responsibility to be the great liberators. Such a philosophy leads to arrogance and hubris, as it always has throughout history. On the WMD and terrorism charge, Saddam didn't have anything that would have been a major threat to the US by a long shot, we informed the world that our intelligence agencies had proof of Saddam's WMD programs, but it turns out that a lot of it was based on hearsay. This has kind of weakened our credibility in the world. The bottom line is that we desposed this guy because he happened to be sitting on top of the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world. He was relatively weak and easy to hit off, so we did it. Saddam, who wasn't a nice character by any stretch of the imagination, was deposed, but the political situation remains very fluid and the issues involving the petro-dollar are far from resolved. In the aggregate, our strategic situation has been weakened by this war.

Just as the average Iraqi citizen what they think of Saddam and his criminal regime. I can understand why some people are against this war: they thing that there are bigger fish in the sea that pose a more dangerous threat to our national security. But when the anti-war people start denying that this man is a terrorist or a criminal, then they are crossing the line. Perhaps it is a double standard on our part, considering we put him in power, but anyone who doubts this man's affiliation with terrorism is smoking something. A man whose crimes against humanity are so vast and hideous yet so well concealed it may take decades before they are fully realized. And such an inventive little despot too! Just a few days ago, I heard about one particularly gruesome way that he may have managed to utilize current technology. Word has it that he has come up with a very creative use for large industrial sized shredding machines meant to chop heavy plastic materials. Never one to take the easy way out, Sadistic Insane has apparently put these machines to work grinding up human beings he no longer needs. And he feeds them live - feet first so they can suffer longer. Truth, fiction, legend? Who knows? What we do know though is that he has committed all sorts of crimes against his own countrymen and that his focus has always been on his own well-being - period. Strange that the far left - the very people who claim every humanitarian virtue known - never quite seem to find the opportunity to mention this.

This man is probably the most despicable example of a human being that anyone could think of. He sits in the lap of luxury while his people starve and struggle to support his regime. It isn't that he is "brave enough" to stand up to the US, it's that he's so scared he needs to keep making useless threats and changing his soiled underwear every half hour.

Let's just get something straight. Do not confuse evil with stupidity. The man is far from stupid. If he was, he would be dead already...or at least out of power. He is not a stupid man. He is evil and has no conscience, I'll say that much. On the other hand, I don't believe he has chemical or biological weapons any more...and Bush and Blair and Howard will have a lot to account for if they have blown up yet another country but find nothing to justify it. And whoever has said it is up to America to save the day again...you're wrong. It is never up to America to save the day...America chooses to involve itself in other countries' business and try to dictate to countries the governments they must have. It is not up to America to place governments in countries in order to have more yes men around the globe. If Saddam had all of these weapons and was such a threat...don't you think he would have already done something in the past 12 years...or at least in the past year knowing that Bush was out to blow up his country?
