Do they come any greedier than this guy?

Seemed to think that he was Speaker for the Whitehouse rather than Speaker of the Peoples' House. Oversaw multiple scandals on his watch, including the Terry Schiavo debacle. Very little if any legislative accomplishments under his tenure that benefited average Americans. Good riddance to bad rubbish.

A good man who is very good behind the scenes. He's not Newt, and maybe that's a good thing.
fierce_pajamas 09/11/2004
He's a goofy sack. Not too fond of him being 3rd in line to the presidency.
blueblitzkrieg 09/10/2004
A fat, GOP loser.

I like him.

Makes fun of John McCain because he dares to have a mind of his own. Truly despicable, in other words par for the GOP.
LoudKidB 07/03/2004
One of the most bi-partisan and non-controversial speakers in history. Truly cares about helping America, stays out of trouble, and unfortunatly gets a bad rap for it. Eitherway, good and effective leader of the house.

Delay's puppet, nothing more.

One of the most undistinguished Speakers of the House, ever. The old wrestling coach doesn't seem to have a clue, outside of playing wasteful and meaningless political games: the Congress he has presided over has passed some of the weakest and most inconsequential legislation in the history of that august body. His "leadership" has led us into record deficit spending again (read that: Reagan Redux), BSing the public into thinking this uncontrolled spending and borrowing is essential for national security (this entirely remains to be seen, and not likely tenable) while actually mortgaging away the futures of our unborn grandchildren. However, strange as it may seem, he is an improvement over the past two Speakers we've had, which isn't saying much: (1) Bob "The Speaker Who Wasn't" Livingston, who never actually made it to the chair because he was one of the biggest whoremasters ever in a city of whoremasters, and (2) Newt "The Ultimate Hypocrite" Gringrich, who's gonna have endless explanations to make on Judgment Day. Hastert is also one of the most morbidly obese members of our lardass Congress, which boasts the likes of Henry Hyde (475 pounds) and Jim Sensenbrenner (650 pounds). I guess alot of sirloin and lobster tails, as well as martinis and scotch, is consumed in those so-so but remarkably high priced restaurants in the district.

Since he assumed his role as Speaker of the House in 1999, Dennis Hastert has been an above average Speaker of the House who I have come to respect. He rose from the cornfields of Illinois to politics, even boasting a 16 year teaching and coaching career at a public high school before being elected as Illinois's Congressman. I respect his willingness to work with both parties to try and get things done to better the lives of all Americans. ".....Solutions to problems cannot be found in a pool of bitterness. They can be found in an environment in which we trust one another's word; where we generate heat and passion, but where we recognize that each member is equally important to our overall mission of improving the life of the American people."--- Dennis Hastert.

A great Speaker of the House.
abichara 07/19/2002
Hastert has been a very good speaker of the house. He is a very good manager and that is key to making sure that house business is done properly. He is not an raving ideologue like Gingrich; Mr. Hastert does everything in an understated manner, but that should not be mistaken for ineffectiveness. He has managed to work with the many different elements of both parties to come up with legislation that is moderate and bi-partisaned. He is definitely the polar opposite of Newt Gingrich, who never compromised. In legislative process, the key word is compromise. The main reason why Gingrich could not build on the Republican 1994 victory was that he misjudged his political mandate. Hastert hasn't and that is why the Republicans are still in the house.

Dennis Hastert plays go-along to get along. He seems to be a nice guy, but methinks a former high-school wrestling coach serving as Speaker of the House seems a bit apropo, nicht wahr? Hastert is a glad-handler who seems to enjoy relaxing on the patterned-daisy davenport after a hard day's work mowing the lawn on his John Deere E-Z Rider in his black knee-hi's and white converse stained chlorophyll-green, half-listening to the Cubbies or ChiSox game on his 1965 brown Zenith transistor whilst quaffing a few with his Midwestern cohorts from the Illinois cornfields, every so often tuning the dial to hear Springsteen belt out "Glory Days" or John Cougar (Mellencamp) rasp "Jack and Diane" or "Small Town." Just my own observation. He certainly is brighter than Dubya and most Re-smug-licans currently in power. Hastert hasn't seemed to have really done much of anything significant in the House aside from being seen talking to Dubya and swigging a few glasses of ice water from his Speaker podium. At least he is no Newtie-baby, and for that I am thankful.

The Speaker is a great leader and has great opinions. Those who are thumping him don't have the slightest idea of the kind of person he is!

It's Hastert, no?
emer2737om 12/14/1999
A party hack. If he has any ideas of his own, it doesn't matter...he'll follow the party line to the end ( which I hope will be soon).
jora2363et 12/02/1999
Ineffective as Speaker, but not as obscenicly dogmatic as most Republicans. History will forget him.

A wrestling coach caught in the headlights. A party hack.
