Ever wonder how many times a guy can take a butt-f'ing by his own party and keep getting up for more? Can't imagine it? Then ask Trent Lott.

Clueless. Ostensibly, OSTENSIBLY, one would think that reaching the level that he did would require at least SOME brains, or wisdom rather, the two are not necessarily a package deal, we've all known people who had great amounts of one and none of the other. WTF is a "White Citizen's Council?" Believe me, whatever it is, they don't share space with The Superfriends in The Hall of Justice. Lott did NOT just make some mistake, there's no errors or remarks taken out of context here, he was talking to Strom Thurmond- a reasonable candidate for most odious American politician of the last century, and the implicit message of those remarks is pretty crystal clear to me. It's not even a party issue in my view, the guy he was talking to was odious as a Democrat, as a Republican, and as The Know-Nothing he probably began as. Now, Lott comes from working class roots, so, if nothing else at least one can't accuse him of being a snob. Know what else I find despicable? The rich elitist bluebloods that still comprise a potent, if decreased section of that party, are doing what they always do, and have done since day one, pitting the poor against the poor by playing on racism and fear. In other words, people like Lott come from a comparatively humble background, but though ethnically and religiously they are often akin to the bluebloods, they are much poorer, in fact some of the poorest folks in the land. People in Appalachia and down South and elsewhere, are akin to the old money, yet behind their backs condescended to, manipulated, and laughed at by the elite of this land. I'd suggest that anyone doubting this, or wanting to defend this guy listen to Dylan's "Only a Pawn In Their Game" repeatedly until that message sinks in.

Lott was thrown overboard for toasting an old man at his birthday party. Not a great leader, but come on now!
GenghisTheHun 07/20/2005
He was a good leader. Talk about spinelessness on behalf of his friends! All he did was extend some Southern courtesy to a piece of history, Strom Thurmond, like him or not, and Lott is thrown to the wolves. I must conclude that he was not liked, or the outcome would have been different. You cannot legimately revise history retroactively, or at least I thought you can't.
weatherdude 02/12/2005
The least that can be said for him is that, well at least he helped show that there is still great intolerance in the Republican Party, and in politics and American society. It proves that in order to win against discrimination in America, there is still much work that remains to be done.
maikuhaiku 02/11/2005
Racist.

Not only a racist, but a stupid racist, for revealing himself so openly.

He is one of the most disgusting politicians to ever grace U.S. politics...totally gross in all ways...
DiamondDavid 04/25/2004
An awful majority leader who caved into the Democrats' agenda time and time again. The comments about Strom Thurmond were overblown, as Lott was probably wanting to compliment a 100 year old man on his birthday, but in a political climate such as this one, he should've found a better way to compliment Thurmond.
ironlaw 04/24/2004
What a gomer.
jgls 12/22/2003
shouldn't have lost his job over the thurmond comments, but was a mediocre majority leader.
LadyShark4534 12/06/2003
Trent Lott is the biggest frikking moron. He says segregation is wonderful, demeans gays, lesbians, and bisexuals, and refuses to make laws against animal cruelty? What's to like?
StanUzbeck 09/08/2003
Despite the fact that every member of his party dissociated themselves from Trent Lott and his bigoted views, Lott is perfectly representative of the Republican party. The louder they proclaim their lack of bigotry, the more they show themselves to be the ideological descendants of the Ku Klux Klan. Republicans are almost entirely rich white americans and poor white hillbillies. There are almost no black or hispanic republicans for a reason (and those cubans 'refugees' in Florida don't count - they're just sore that their businesses which exploited the cuban people were nationalized by Castro's regime, not because they were tortured or anything). Trent Lott is the average republican, whether they admit it or not.
huskerlaw03 08/09/2003
Where to start? This man is a racist hypocrit. Anyone who claims that the US would be better if Strom Thurmond's Dixiecrat Party had one an election can not possibly claim to be anything else. His attempt to redeem himself by appearing on BET only made matters worse...he claimed he was not a racist and offered the fact that he has one African-American staff member as proof. Give me a break.
wetsack 07/20/2003
He's better than Hillary Clinton.
Redoedo 07/05/2003
So if Strom Thurmond had been elected back in 1948, then we wouldn't be having all these "problems" now, Mr. Lott? I don't believe that allowing a black girl to go to a white school is a problem. I don't believe that letting a black man eat in a white restraunt is a problem. I don't believe that letting a black man sit down next to a white man on the bus is a problem. I don't believe that equality for all of our citizens is a problem.
RebelYell1861 06/19/2003
How come the same people that stick up for the Dixie Sh*ts' right to "free speech" are the very ones who are against what this guy said?
twinmom101 06/17/2003
So Trent Lott is gonna write a book and rat out all those big poopy-head liberals who ruined his career as the conservatives' poster child for bigotry. I'm up for a good laugh.
37102002 05/03/2003
Damn he is still in the Senate. Wish he would go back to good ole Mississipi so he can proudly and openly wear his white hood and robe and burn crosses.
Saltydog 05/02/2003
Excellent speaker, solid Republican, intelligent, articulate, and forceful, he has the best interests of this country at heart. Sometimes the good 'ole boys just need to control their comments, and keep them to themselves.

JTree 02/24/2003
In Mississippi, Trent is known as "Not-A-Lot". I can't say that I disagree with that assessment considering the trouble that his stupid comments made for the Republican Party. A senate majority leader should have known better and held his tongue and his nose at a testimonial for the old Dixiecrat. Not a very good politician.

StickFigurSici de 02/02/2003
Im mad at the media. I have read the transcripts of what he said. He said that he "wished THermin a happy birthday, and that he had one the presidential race back in..". Ok. So have ANY of you ENER heard of a complement? CHRIST! all he was doin was wishing an old guy happy B-Day, and the Media takes it a a racist coment! you should all be ashamed for screwing this guy over for no reason! ESPECIALLY THE DEMOCRATS! they're really annoying. Republicans hold this country together. The democrates sit around and debate what the republicans do. Grrr.

Gives the South a bad name. C'mon Dixie, show that you're not a bunch of rednecks by not reelected reactionary jerkoffs like Lott and Thurmond.
AmazingMole 12/31/2002
It is a shame that we cannot give Massa Trent Lott a one way ticket back to his Mississippi plantation. This man is a big loser. He wished that Strom Thurmond was elected in '48' because minorities knew their rightful place. Anybody could see that....To those people who doubt that Massa Trent is a racist. I suggest you check at his record. i.e Massa Lott supported discrimination at Bob Jones University ....Update: It appears that Lott's apologies was a bogus. Massa Trent whines that his enemies are out to get him because he is a God-fearing Christian. Hahahha, this guy is too much.
mikeholly93 12/29/2002
Trent Lott is a redneck racist Republican! He must GO!!!
missourihillbi lly 12/24/2002
What Trent Lott said is no more racist that "the United negro collage fund or affirmative action.
wmassie 12/19/2002
Hey! Segregation was a great idea. Sure Trent...By the way, how did you feel about that Adolf Hitler guy?
number8 12/18/2002
Pigwiggle misses the point -- Strom ran against the Republicans in '48. The GOP candidate that year was Thomas Dewey -- remember, the guy who didn't beat Truman? Had Thurmond not stirred ran on a strict segregationist ticket and stayed a loyal Republican, it's likely the GOP would have won the Presidency that year. So it's really puzzling for Trent to say "we supported you in '48" when a) Republicans didn't and b) Trent was, what, 7 years old?
pigwiggle 12/17/2002
Take Mr. Lott's recent comments the way he meant them! Which was in praise of Strom Thurmond! He said we'd have been better off with Mr. Thurmond as president , he DIDNT say we'd have been better off with the segregationist party in power--he didn't even mean that! Get real people, don't look for fire where there isn't even smoke! All Mr. Lott meant by his comments was to compliament an old man who is going into retirement, he was thinking of Strom Thurmond as a REPUBLICAN!!! not a segregationist!

My grandmother had a word for a person with this condition - simpleton. I think the entire situation can best be summed up in the immortal words of Homer Simpson, king of all simpletons - DOH!

I really think the whole situtaion has been blown out of proportion. After all there was only one editor that even thought it was news worthy and he was probaly bored for somthing to do,and of coarse the everyone had to get on the band wagon.I think we have come along way and maybe we have along way to go still, but why create more trouble. I bet if the truth was know I bet you could find other house and senate rep that have voted for the opposite they are now for. That was then and this is now. GIVE IT A REST.
crowbar 12/16/2002
T. Lott a terrible representive for any state. Remarks that he recently made clearly depict a fatal flaw that occurs in our political structure: in this day and age people still hold racisim as a strong quality, worth voting for to represent a common voice. Very disturbing!
swanoak 12/16/2002
No matter how many times he apologizes it will always be a lie. I never liked his smug smile. Signed: "A Republican"
af40 12/16/2002
Trent Lott, like so many other relics from our sorrowful racist past, obviously harbor some ill sentiment towards minorities in this country. But the real question is: will this hinder his ability to lead, and lead fairly? I guess since he made such an obvious public 'snafu' it will be easy to shoot arrows at the guy, but let's be real folks. Don't you think there are a whole lot more closet racists out there who have the same feelings? At least now that Lott has been 'outed' he may watch his steps more carefully from now on. (Is that really a solution?) But there are many more racists who will continue to (presumably) espouse a hidden racist agenda while claiming publicly to be pro-racial equality. What good is it that we are all now becoming homogenized under the rubric of an unfortunately too liberal political correctness campaign that aims to remedy inequality while actually only serving to hide it even further. Think about it. What has the Lott fiasco taught us, and more importantly, what has it taught the Lotts of this world? Well, assuming Lott will be censured in some public forum or other, all it will really have accomplished is to tell those Lottists to keep their mouth shut even tighter. In the end the Lotts will make a public image appearing to be pro equality at an increasing rate, serving only to obfuscate the real problem. Look at what candidates do next time to see the real racists, rather than denounce them publicly for their words. Sure, words do hurt, but politicians are there to serve, and if they serve a racist agenda while publicly proclaiming one of racial equality, then you truly know who you are dealing with.
magellan 12/15/2002
What is wrong with this guy? It's bad enough that a redneck is in heading the senate... but a moron??? What could he possibly have been thinking? I hate the whole "political correct" phenomenon as much of the next guy, but a leader in America's government just can't get away with saying that segregation would be better for the country. He needs to resign ASAP, or he will bring Bush down.
abichara 12/15/2002
I don't believe that Trent Lott should lose his career over the recent statement he made on Strom Thurmond's birthday. He just wanted to make the old man happy on his birthday; I don't believe he wants segregation back and even if he did, there is no way he could bring that about. I think he is a pretty effective Republican caucus leader. This is no way for a man who has had a long and prosperous career to end it. He may have been supportive of segregation a long time ago, but so were a lot of politicians in the South at the time. That does not mean that he wants a return to those days. Unfortunately, Mr. Lott has been turned into a latter day Newt Gingrich; he won't be as effective anymore as Senate leader because others won't want to work with him. The Congress is a collegial body, people mostly argue on the basis of philosophy and not personality. Lott has inflamed plenty of people he will have to work with to get legislation passed. The initial reaction may be overhyped, but the long term implications of this may be that nothing gets done if Mr. Lott remains leader. I believe that he has received a bad deal on this, but if he becomes politically incapacitated, then by all means the Republicans should pick a new leader that will get things done.
simplus 12/12/2002
Every time Trent Lott opens his mouth he says something so incredibly stupid and insensitive that I'm beginning to wonder if this guy might not be a mole for the Democratic party.

Seemed like a great guy at first...then he apparently got Potomac fever, and started selling out to the liberals repeatedly. It's because of timid men like him that people like Clinton get rewarded for their misdeeds.
ellajedlicka21 12/19/2001
I agree with Proud Democrat. He is a conservative that has a radical right-wing agenda. He is an unreasonable person that has finally lost his seat as majority leader of the Senate because of Jeffords' switch.
