Shrek 3

Dreamworks Pictures' wonderful, whimsical Shrek proves to be the latest family film to live up to its billing. With its blend of high adventure, light romance, and double-layered dialogue (which will take on a slightly different meaning for the under- and over-12 crowd), Shrek is capable of enthralling both children and their parents. In fact, this movie is so good that adults unaccompanied by offspring can venture into a theater without having to dress up in a disguise. Shrek is not a guilty pleasure for sophisticated movie-goers; it is, purely and simply, a pleasure.

When it comes to computer-generated motion pictures, Shrek has once more raised the bar - and this one was already at an impressively high level in the wake of Toy Story 2 and Dinosaur. Yet Shrek outshines them both, boasting the most impressive detail and most amazingly rendered creatures of any motion picture in its class. And, although the human beings still don't look entirely realistic, they're getting close. In fact, this is the first major computer animated film in which human beings have had a significant role (they played secondary parts in the two Toy Storys), and their appearance is such that we have no more trouble accepting them than we do in traditional animated fare.

Shrek is essentially Beauty and the Beast with a few clever twists. In the quirky, irreverent way that it views fairy tales and their conventions, it's not unlike The Princess Bride. Fans of those two stories will find much to like here. And, both kids and adults can play a game of "guess how many famous faces we can see". There are certainly a large number of cameos: Pinnochio (a "possessed toy"), Snow White and the Seven Dwarves, Cinderella, the Big Bad Wolf, the Three Little Pigs, the Gingerbread Man, the Three Blind Mice, the Mirror (as in "Mirror, mirror on the wall, who's the fairest of them all..."), and many others.

Our protagonist is an ogre named Shrek (voice of Mike Myers, using a Scottish accent). Except for scaring off the odd knight who comes in search of his hide-out, Shrek leads a relatively peaceful life, until the day that he stumbles into Donkey (voice of Eddie Murphy). Donkey is fleeing soldiers who are rounding up all the fairy tale creatures with the intent of resettling them. Unfortunately for Shrek, the local landholder, Lord Farquaad (John Lithgow), has decided to deport them to Shrek's swamp. This causes the irritated ogre, accompanied by his new best friend, Donkey, to head for the city of Duloc, where Farquaad holds court. There, he makes a deal with the noble - in return for getting back his swamp, Shrek will perform a quest and rescue Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz) from the tower where she is held prisoner. The catch: she's guarded by a fire-breathing dragon. Farquaad wants Fiona for his wife (he chose her over Cinderella and Snow White), and figures that the ogre might be his best chance to rescue her. But what he doesn't count on, and what Shrek doesn't expect, is that the beauty and the beast will develop feelings for each other.

Many of Shrek's funniest lines (like "a castle that big must mean he's compensating for something") will go over younger viewer's heads, but there are still plenty that won't ("I'm going to save my ass", referring to Donkey). The screenplay was obviously written with all age groups in mind. Shrek is not on such a lofty plane that children will feel as if they're missing something, but it isn't lobotomized in a way that will insult the intelligence of older viewers.

As impressive as the visuals are - and they are very impressive - Shrek wouldn't be the movie it is without a quartet of effective vocal performances. As this kind of animation becomes more prevalent, the importance of choosing the right voices will need equal care and attention. Voices help to define the characters, and a bad choice can do irreparable damage. Just as not all silent stars were suitable for talkie roles, so not all live-action actors can do vocal performances. Fortunately, Shrek has four capable actors. First and foremost is Mike Myers, who is known as a vocal chameleon. Without seeing his name in the opening credits, you'd never know it was him. John Lithgow plays Faquaad as nasty and short-sighted, but not really evil, which makes a pleasant change from the usual animated villain. Eddie Murphy shows that a real comic genius can get laughs without relying on his own facial expressions and body language. Murphy's Donkey is one of the funniest characters he has brought to the screen. (Here, he improves upon what he did in Mulan.) Finally, Cameron Diaz's princess is equal parts sugar and vinegar. She believes in true love and Prince Charming, but, like her Charlie's Angels alter-ego, she's not afraid to do a little Matrix-style butt kicking.

The interplay between Shrek and Princess Fiona is sweet and tender, while the exchanges between the ogre and the ass are often barbed and subversively funny. Like The Princess Bride, Shrek breaks with convention, but not so far that viewers will be put off by it. And, while there is a happy ending (as there must be in any fairy tale, no matter how unconventional), it's not necessarily the conclusion that many people will be expecting (at least up until the 2/3 point, when the movie reveals its hand). First-time co-directors Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson (he has worked as a visual supervisor on other films, including the two Joel Schumacher Batmans; this is her first credit) have crafted a movie to be proud of, and one that will hopefully receive a lot of attention, even during the crowded summer season. Shrek is easily one of the year's most magical experiences.

I saw this when it came out in theatres. An ogre named Shrek goes out with a donkey to save a princess and ends up falling in love with her. There's some nice animation and the actors are hilarious.

Both one and two...in fact I kind of liked the second one better. I like a film that kids can enjoy and the adults get something out of it too.

Great movie! After I bought this for my son, he drew pictures of Shrek, Donkey, and Dragon. (He frequently draws pictures of characters from his favorite cartoons.) And "Shrek 2" was even better!

Shrek was an excellent movie. I love these family oriented films that have a really deep meaning. I actually shed a tear during the scene where all the main characters had separated after Shrek thought Fiona didn't really want him and that sad song was playing. They were all thinking about each other and it was just a moving moment for me (I had just broken up with me significant other myself lol). Just a great film, very funny too.

More like a 3.5. Admittedly, the movie had some great moments. It breaks the fourth wall once or twice and every scene involving established fairy tale characters was great. However, for an animated comedy, the movie takes itself a bit too seriously at times. Also, the bodily function gags just aren't funny. The sequel, however, looks to be an imporvement with more pop-culture references, fairy tale characters and breaking the fourth wall (judging from the trailers).

I absolutely loved this movie. It was so cute, because it was pretty much a spoof of all the fairy tales. It had a real good meaning involving looks isn't that important as some people make it out to be. Ooh and it was funny. I just had to say I loved this movie again.

A pretty good film- like all Children's Movies- not one that I thought that I would be pleased with. However, they chose just the right people to do the voices and the story was surprisingly good. While keeping up with the typical "save the princess" theme, there were some great comedy scenes along the way.

Great movie. I havent met a child that doesnt like it, and the only adults that dont like it are compaining about "Adult Jokes." True, there is adult humor, but is well written so that young children will not be scandalized. They remain as innocent as they were before, and adults can sit with their children and watch the movie together.

Wow, was I disappointed and surprised with Shrek, especially the first 20 minutes or so. I found it rather crass and not terrible entertaining. 10 year old boy humor was my initial thought and even though the animation is appealing for young children, it is far too adult for young children(thus the PG rating). Warner Brothers does it right in combining entertaining animation for both young and old (especially early Warner Brothers). The kids enjoy the animation and the adult reference is subtle and clever. The ending, however, was quite endearing and poignant; that for me was the saving grace of the film.

A very unique film, and what I really like about it is the way they make the jokes kind of tongue in cheek. But as they grow older, some kids will eventually catch on and it will make them appreciate the film even more. These characters are totally hilarious too. The scene where John Lithgow's character keeps asking the gingerbread man "do you know the muffin man?" just cracks me up everytime.

This movie was, to tell it truthfully, painfully boring. I have watched it twice now, and everyone time it gets more painful. Ignore the people that called this movie something that would entertain your family. It doesn't even come close to that. This movie was overblown and is not as good as people say it is.

“Shrek” would still be excellent entertainment even without the voice of Eddie Murphy, but it wouldn’t have sparkled quite as much. This state of the art animated film never ceased to amaze and amuse on several levels at once. One of the most impressive things about it was the very realistic attention to detail. Facial expressions were especially impressive and spoke volumes about the personality of each character. Even the “lighting” was so oddly real looking I noticed a couple of times what appeared to be lens spot glare. Young children will enjoy the action and the characters but won’t get much of the more off the wall stuff at this point. Since it appears to have all the earmarks of a future classic most of them will no doubt be watching “Shrek” with their own families one-day.

For some reason I just didn't like this movie. It seems like it has too much adult humor. I mean, does a kid's movie really have to be laced with enough adult humor to require a PG rating? Just because the parents want to be entertained while taking the kids to this? If the parents want entertainment for themselves, hire a baby sitter and go out to see Bridget Jones Diary, but don't fill America's youth with foul humor even if it is 'sugarcoated'. Shrek was a dissapointment to say the least. The one good thing about it was the "I'm a Believer" remake, but again, that's for our own enjoyment, does a young child really care about Smashmouth or want a 'rock song' as their movie theme song? I would hope that the answer, even in our jaded world is still no.

An all around great movie. We brought our boys..ages 4 and 5..and everyone enjoyed Shrek. I sit through many childrens' movies for the sake of my kids (although I have dozed off now and again and have found myself bored to tears in others) but this ranks up there with the best. Myers, Murphy and Diaz all do an excellent job, as well as Lithgow. The animation is unbelievable and the story line is moralistic while being entertaining and humorous. My kids and my husband and I were all entertained for the duration of the movie..the stab at many Disney movies was hilarious, there was plenty of adult humor that I hope flew right over my kids' heads. I highly recommend Shrek unless you are overly sensitive and want an ultracensored childrens movie..they do say a** in reference to the donkey..the gingerbread man does say eat me and there are a few references to flatulence..for me and my family, none of this was a problem..but I do know some people who would be horrified..not us, we LOVED Shrek!
