His real achievement was that he became president. Much of what he did is of little consequence at this point in time, but here we are discussing him 155 years after he left office. I can't wait for his dollar coin!

Was regarded by some as one of the very worst Presidents until we were awarded this Bush creature eight years ago- someone must have hit the target at a carnival in Hell. About the best thing this guy ever did is lend his surname to one of the great concert halls in rock history. Okay, I'm being facetious, he did accomplish a few things like opening up Japan but in the main, this was an uninspired Presidency- one of the worst of that fallow pre- Lincoln era. And I've never been fond of the Know Nothings, who ran Fillmore as a candidate in 1856.

He was a president of little leadership, few speeches, and few actions. The few actions he did take were often bad ones, in the conpromise of 1850 and his harsh enforcement of the fugitive slave law. He did open up Japan to other nations, as well as hold together the states for a few more years.

He stuck it out but the times were tough with all the tugging and hauling over slavery. We needed some leadership, and he didn't have it.

He tried hard and his intentions were honorable; unfortunately, his name will forever be linked to the terrible Missouri Compromise of 1850. Let it be said that some things can't be compromised, so that is why I give him two stars rather than three.

Fillmore is most remembered for signing the controversial Compromise of 1850. The compromise only deepened divisions between the South and North.

probably the most forgettable president if not for the name

Millard who?
bsd987 11/12/2004
Redoedo, what you said convinced me to give him a two. You said basically what I was thinking, but you convinced me to give him that 2 for the opposite reasons as why I'd give him a 1. I forgot about his opening up trade with Japan, but still. He had good intentions. People tend to forget that. Taylor was going to veto the Missouri Compromise but died...

Caused the Civil War.

Millard Fillmore ascended to the Presidency at a time in which the North and the South were more divided than ever before. Fillmore helped come up with and fully endorsed the Compromise of 1850, which he hoped would please both the North and the South. This Compromise granted territorial status to New Mexico and Utah and left slavery up to the territories themselves. The compromise also included the admittance of California as a free state, and the controversial Fugitive Slave Law. This Compromise, however, did nothing to please either side. The North was enraged over the Fugitive Slave Law and the South disliked the admittance of California as a free state. In order to wave of secession threats from the South, he ruthlessly enforced the Fugitive Slave Law. This cost him most all of his support in the North. Fillmore did his best, however, and he can, in some ways, be credited for putting off the Civil War for ten years. On the other hand, however, his actions did nothing to PREVENT the war itself. In foriegn affairs, Fillmore had a little more success. For three centuries, Japan had been an isolated nation. However, Fillmore ordered a trade mission to Japan. Although the mission was not completed during his administration, it did open up Japan for trade with the rest of the world. Also in the Pacific, Fillmore showed a lot of boldness in preventing the Hawaiian Islands from falling into European hands. Fillmore warned the powers of Europe that the United States would not tolerate any such action. Tensions over Cuba also aroused, and President Fillmore was directly blamed for the failure of an invasion of Cuba which was designed to promote rebellion from Spain (Remarkably like the Bay of Pigs a century later). In the final analysis, The Fillmore Presidency was indeed simply another stepping stone towards Civil War. He was the best, in my opinion of the Presidents who served in the 1850s, but he truly was a compromising man at a time when compromise was impossible. "An honorable defeat is better than a dishonorable victory."--- Millard Fillmore, 13th President of the United States.

Milliard Fillmore? BORING!

Fillmore makes good ink supply products (800.975.3100) ... ..... Actually (real Presidential comment) Fillmore wasn't as bad as his rating seems to indicate (now 2 1/4). Although lack of luster, his Presidency had some merit. .....

Anybody ever wonder why we don't have a Whig Party any more? (hint: Fillmore was the last Whig president.)

Millard? Was this a popular name?
