The Reaping 1

Hilary Swank is wasted in this silly movie that might have made an interesting X-Files episode, but even that would be a stretch. Even the effects are cheesy, as are the dialogue and plot. 1-star, mostly because Hilary looks good and tries hard to be better than the material.

The Reaping 2

I understood that this was a previously viewed DVD, but when I received it, it was clear that it was a copy of an original.

This film is not only not scary, it is unbearably boring and predictable. An embarrassment for everyone concerned. Save your money. I wish I had.

The Reaping 5

I really enjoyed his movie. Knowing the Bible's plaques and also knowing scientific facts of how they could be justified if you wanted to not take them to reason of it all being God's will I could appreciate this movie very much. I found this gripping, intense and also touching at times. I would say be your own critic in this particular movie. Don't watch the special features first! Not knowing how they did the locus scene made it more intense and horrific. I didn't notice the rating of this movie but I would give it a R rating myself and not let small children watch this movie. I would even not trust a PG-13 rating because of the occult message in the movie of Satin verses God message that was sent during this movie when they arrived in Haven. This is just my opinion. I am a Hilary Swank movie collector and have no regrets I've added this to my collection. I thought she did a great job in this movie. AnnaSophia was delightful yet frightening at times when she gave that glare of hers with those beautiful eyes. I am glad they selected her to play the little girl who lived in the swamps.

I'm not a big fan of horror movies, particularly recent ones, which replace any kind of intelligent creepiness with simpleminded gore and have the intellectual depth of a petrie dish.

That being said, even by those standards, this thing is a piece of shit.

Look, I didn't think "The Exorcist" was the best horror film to ever come out of Hollywood, but I can't help but compare it to nearly everything that calls itself a "horror film" that's come out in the decades since. Give "The Exorcist" its due-- it set out to shock and scare people, despite its absurd premise, and it succeeded by pulling out all the stops. Of course, it's difficult to top some of what appeared in it (how do you "top" a 12-year old girl masturbating with a crucifix or vomiting pea soup into a priest's face while shrieking gravel-voiced obscenities?), and, given the Reagan-style puritanism of subsequent decades, nobody's been too willing to try. "Shocking" and "Scary" in cinema now constitutes an ocean of blood flowing down a wall, or over a floor, or into a river. Or someone (or something) walking up suddenly behind someone else and scaring them into cardiac arrest. Or...well, that seems to be about it. And so..."The Reaping". I've never been diagnosed with Attention Deficit Disorder, but if a film loses me in the first half hour or so, it's hard to get me back. I'm off somewhere else in my mind, and by the time things wrap themselves up an hour or 2 later, I have little idea about what's supposed to be going on, and my only real concern is that I've just wasted 2 hours of my life that I could have better spent reading a book (or watching another movie). For me, "The Reaping" was a dull, incomprehensible mess, having something or other to do with Biblical plagues, some Louisiana death-cult, and a mysterious child who occasionally runs into the frame of the camera, stares woodenly into the lens, and then just as quickly runs out of the frame. Why? I never did know, and by the end of the picture I can assure you I didn't care. In truth, I was never quite sure about who the villain of the piece was supposed to be-- the child, the townspeople, the child's brother, the child's mother, the guy Swank is attracted to, the producers of the film? There are good actors in the film-- Hilary Swank, Idris Elba (he was brilliant as the vicious drug kingpin in one of my favorite TV series "The Wire"), and Annasophia Robb, who is one of the more talented juvenile actresses I've seen in recent years. As good as Robb generally is, though, she might as well be a piece of wood for all she's given to do in the film. Not her fault, of course...she didn't write the script, or direct her scenes...but she literally runs in and out of camera range, and then stares blankly into the camera as locusts swarm over her, or as red Kool-Aid that I guess is supposed to be blood pools about and over her feet. And that's about it. Terrifying!
