I enjoy rap, but not gangsta' rap. At the risk of sounding preachy, Li'l Kim is an intelligent woman, but I could say this about any foul-mouthed, foam-domed (if you're a woman and feel you need to alter what God has given you) person out there: use your smarts and brains, and your body, for things in life that will add spiritual value, not shock value. Lots of rappers (Tupac, Biggie Smalls, Ice Cube, Dre, Snoop, Eve, etc.) have claimed God and church have influenced their music and their outlook, and in turn they reflect this in their music and their flow. Fine. But would God, or Jesus, or Allah identify with certain lyrics that denigrate and abuse women? Or celebrate gettin' your freak on? Or do a little dope and gettin' your back? (And look what happened to Tupac and Biggie.) Not all rap is negative, to be sure. But I put very little faith in a genre of hip-hop that is not representative of me or my hood. Give me Al Green, Lou Rawls, Mahalia Jackson, Luther Vandross, and even country and classical any day.
