 | GenghisTheHun (179) 05/23/2006 | This is a very unnecessary department of government that could easily be abolished and not missed.
We could roll up some the pork barrel projects that this department doles out and apply it towards Katrina or the deficit.

 | Redoedo (41) 10/22/2005 | Many states do not receive their fair share of funding from this bloated, pork-filled bureaucracy. Maryland, for example, only receives about 87 cents for every $1 in transportation tax dollars it sends to Washington. The massive highway transportation bill passed by Congress only increases the size of the budget deficit even more with very little to show in terms of meaningful improvement of our Nation's transportation infrastructure. The federal gasoline tax should be abolished, and this department should be dissolved with its responsibilities devolving to the states.

 | apparati (0) 01/01/2003 | I like the search-and-rescue function of the Coast Guard, but not necessarily all the law enforcement aspect of it. We have far too many miles of asphalt in this country, so stop building new roads and let the ones we already have deteriorate enough to slow people down and reduce traffic fatalities. I don't know anything about the International Ice Patrol, but we don't need such a big (pervasive) FAA. Airman Certification sounds good. I have mixed feelings about Railroad Administration, though. The Stop Red Light Running Campaign sounds dumb. I've seen more Chicago police run red lights in two years than ordinary citizens in 30 years.
