Only a deaf person could rate the Wolf less than *4*, and if I had my way, he'd get a *6*.

The Wolf was a great performer, and his best material is definately "up there" with the blues classics. It didn't hurt that he got excellent musicians in his band, such as Hubert Sumlin,or that many of his tunes were crafted by the ubiquitous and monumentally talented Willie Dixon.

Any box-set of Howlin' Wolf is a must-own for a blues fan. . .Wolf was as raw as they come. . .he couldn't read music thus he was difficult to work with- his anger/frustration/persona really comes to life in the music. . .

I do not feel as familiar with or emotionally close to all the great blues singers as I think I ought to be, but I do love Howlin' Wolf. My favorites are "Howlin' For My Darling" and the big hits--"Spoonful" and "Sitting On Top Of The World." I always thought Willie Dixon was a famous singer himself, but it was more like Willie wrote the songs and played bass while Wolf had the voice/personality that brought the songs to life. Howlin' Wolf was a little lewd but always soulful, plus he learned from the King himself, a bluesman who I do really appreciate--Charlie Patton.

Why is The Wolf way down here?! He's THE man.

My all-time favorite blues singer. I was such a fan when I was a kid that I wrote him a fan letter and sent him a souvenir from the state I was living in then, and he wrote me back. Whatta voice.

When it comes to absolutely raw and ferocious electric blues, nobody was better than Howlin' Wolf. (especially the sides he recorded for Sun.)
