Awesome bluesman. . .I was overseas when I heard of his death and it saddened me. Carlos Santana once said, "His guitar sounds like a combination of God and the Devil." You can e-bay any of his greatest hits CD collections and work off of there- any serious blues fan has Hooker in the catalog.

He's my favorite. At least my favorite of the electric era, but howling wolf is a close second.

Hugely important figure in blues history, and a damn fine voice and musician as well. Seemingly lived forever, and recorded about 500 thousand albums, so he's pretty accessible.

One of the giants in a genre loaded with them. A distinctive guitarist, with a great, growling voice, many classic tunes, and an enormous influence on subsequent blues and rock artists.

Too many songs sounded the same but the ones that didn't were amazing.

He wasn't a great guitarist. Raw blues. I love it.

A master of blues. It was a sad day last week to learn of John Lee Hooker's death. I have seen him on stage 3 or 4 times and have always been moved by his spirit and that boogie beat. A very giving man and entertainer and an immense influence on both blues and rock musicians for decades. "Boogie Chillen" and "Boom Boom" are 2 of his best and most well-known songs, but he's recorded almost 100 albums, so those songs are just the tip of the iceberg. A great man, he will be sorely missed.

John Lee Hooker has been and continues to be a giant of blues music. I saw him in San Francisco over the summer of '99, and this guy still has it. He was performing at a Guinness festival with Elvis Costello, Van Morisson, and a bunch of others, and he put them all to shame. Maybe all the Guinness in my stomach had something to do with it, but it seemed to me that Hooker is getting even better with age.

Is it true that JL Hooker was a janitor at LSU before before he was "discovered" in a local bar playing the blues?

The Great-Granddaddy. Indeed.
