He was good but overrated as blues man. John Lee Hooker could wipe the floor with him.

Wearing his heart on his sleeve, Stevie Ray Vaughn always brought intense emotional energy to his songs. That energy was matched by his fantastic guitar skills, soulful singing, and great sense of composition. His back up band, Double Trouble, always gave him the solid support he needed. The later addition of a keyboardist was a nice touch as well.

One of the very few to make the Blues a pleasurable listening experience. Let's be honest here. The Blues is a fairly dull genre as it's so completely formulaic. SRV injected it with fire and energy and brought it kicking and screaming into the late 20th century. With his death, it's now largely retreated back into its furrow. Only the much underrated Greg Koch is doing anything of interest with it right now.

a very good guitarist but doesnt even come close to Jimi Hendrix.
decalod85 12/06/2005
Stevie is great, did Hendrix better than Hendrix, but I feel a little worn out with him.

genius.

Stevie was great, his Hendrix stuff was excelent especially Little Wing and Voodoo Chile. when he played he was an open channel, ideas seemed to flow right through him. He never had to really think about the next lick. And to those that think blues is dead, guess again. It has never been mainstream, but it has always been around. Come to Trenton Blues Jersey the East coast Capitol of the Blues where guys like Joe Zook and Paul Plumeri hold court every weekend http://www.geocities.com/joezookblues/

sad that he left so soon. blues is actually dying out in the good ole US of A. But when SRV ware around it was actually getting main stream air time. I play blues and I like SRV, not one of my main guitar idols but as a player he must be respected for what he could do on the fret board.

Possibly the greatest guitarist ever, next to Jimi Hendrix-who was his Idol. This man wrote and sang terrific Blues songs. Not only an amazing guitarist, but a great vocalist as well.It is a great tragedy he died so young.

Only white blues guitarist worth a damn. Texas Flood is a must-have for any fan of electric blues. She's my pride and joy is an awesome song.

I've listened to some musicians and liked them immediately. I've heard others and said to myself This man/woman is amazing. Very seldom does a musician elicit the same reaction from large groups of people across genres of music. Where everyone says: Who is that! I've only seen it once in my life. It's very nearly spiritual, that one person can elicit that same reaction from so many. And yet, it's the only time I've ever witnessed it happen. Sure a whole generation of British guitarists (many, many, amazing guitarists), combined blues and rock n roll. Only one physically moved blues into the realm of rock n roll, effortlessly. I mean Clapton's been trying to do that his whole life. Hendrix would have gotten a major kick outta this guy. Probably after he beat him up for stealing the behhind the back and teeth thing. :-)

I have only one comment: Why isn't this man #1?
mcspongeicus 05/31/2004
I really wish he'd been around 10 years earlier or 20 years later because i desplise the production on all his albums. Great guitarist though.
jam 05/02/2004
BEST EVER? Come on. He did nothing new or innovative, and while he was obviously very skilled, MANY guitarists were at least as good: Lonnie Mack, Jeff Beck, Lightnin' Hopkins just to name a few!
Akeelm 04/25/2004
One of the most amazing guitarists to have ever lived!
irishgit 02/25/2004
A blazing, brilliant guitar, that was sometimes frightening in its intensity. I saw him twice live, once in a small venue, and he kept pushing the envelope past the point it seemed possible to go.
Schluggi 01/31/2004
Infamous... THough I would not put him into the blues category. He picked up and extended to that level where Hendrix was never able to get close to.
freebird_0128 01/23/2004
This man was truly one with his guitar. If you watch him perform, it's like watching him go through every emotion-from real pain to making love. His voice melded with those fantastic fingers have left an indelible mark on blues. No has ever compared.
jamestkirk 09/10/2003
The greatest white blues musician ever. Paid homage rightfully so to his many influences, especially Jimi Hendrix, on several occasions. Could really lay down the licks heavily on the guitar and had a beautiful soft blues touch as well. Left us too early tragically and is missed.
thearmbarkid 07/08/2003
Saw the man at his last performance in Alpine Valley, and I still cry every August 27th. SRV, we miss you.
kolby1973 07/01/2003
Boring, boring, boring ! And very, very, very overrated. I get so sick of hearing about this guy.
WellWellWell 07/01/2003
When Stevie played, time stood still. We still miss you, you left us too soon.
RebelYell1861 05/08/2003
Watch the man's hands up close when he plays. This guy was absolutely phenomenal.
ersken 05/08/2003
I have never seen anyone else revel so much emotion while performing. He was compleatly engulfed by the music everytime he went on stage. The technical skill of SRV may be matched someday. But no one will ever match the amount of heart and soul he put into his music.
Joe23665 02/23/2003
First heard "Tin Pan Alley" on a hot day trapped in a traffic jam. Took me 6 months to find out who he was. Never will be replaced.
Jason1978 02/09/2003
SRV, Tommy Shannon & Chris Layton were the definitive American blues rock trio.
Jason1972 12/03/2002
The one thing that saddens me the most about SRV is that he finally sobered and cleaned up his act about a year and a half before his death. His music was becoming more tight and solid and he left us too soon - indeed a terrible chapter in blues and rock and roll history.
Errol 03/10/2002
He is the best blues performer of of recent times.
jenjerspice 12/23/2001
SRV was one of the best blues musicians to have ever lived!!
Potch1214 10/01/2001
One listen to SRV, and you knew this guy was something special. Was he a Hendrix rip-off as some have said? I think not. He WAS a huge fan of Hendrix and covered several of his songs. Therefore he probably grew up playing Hendrix. It would be hard not to play like Jimi, then. But Stevie's style was all his own. One listen to ANYTHING Stevie played on and you know who it was like you could recognize someone's voice. The man was freakishly awesome. Possibly the best blues player ever. It is simply a shame that he was taken from us so young. Worth buying any of his albums, but especially "Texas Flood" and "In Step."

SADLY, I WAS INTRODUCED AND CAME TO LOVE SRV'S MUSIC JUST 1 SHORT YEAR BEFORE HIS DEATH. I BELIEVE HE WAS THE MAN WHO HAD THE TALENT AND FEELING TO BRING THE BLUES TO THE MASSES. HE WAS MUCH TOO YOUNG TO DIE. HE HAD COME SO FAR BUT SO MUCH MORE WAS RIGHT WITHIN HIS REACH. HIS MUSIC BOTH INSPIRES ME AND LEADS ME TO DEEP THOUGHT. THE ALTIMATE GUTARIST, ONLY HENDRIX COULD COME ANYWHERE NEAR HIM. THEN THERE'S HIS VOICE, I'M SURE THE CRITIC'S FIND NO GREAT TALENT. I HEAR SOUL AND DOWN TO EARTH EMOTION IN EVERY NOTE. I REGRET THAT HIS DEATH HAS MADE HIM SOMEWHAT OF A LEGEND, ONLY BECAUSE THAT IS A STATUS HE WAS ON HIS WAT TO IN LIFE.
Sonny Boy 03/20/2001
What a gigantic loss to the world of blues/rock and music in general. He played so many styles of different blues so well and so effortlessly. He had Hendrix down pat and went beyond.I enjoyed Stevie Ray most when he shifted into a jazz/rock mode. His all-star band,Double Trouble, didn't harm his approach either.I'm so glad I got to see him in concert months before his passing.I still get a lump in my throat sometimes when I hear certain songs of his.He was getting better all the time.
dka64 01/23/2001
NEVER WAS THERE A MAN OR NEVER WILL BE A MAN WHO MADE IT LOOK LIKE HE WAS BORN TO HIS GUITAR WHO COULD SING THE BLUES LIKE HIS HEART WAS ON FIRE!THAT DAY IN 1990 WAS INDEED A BLACK DAY FOR ALL HIS FANS WORLDWIDE SUCH A TALENT SILENT FOREVER,BUT AT LEAST WE STILL HAVE HIS MUSIC HE LEFT BEHIND TO ME THAT WAS THE DAY THE MUSIC REALLY DIED.WE MISS YOU STEVIE PLAY ON IN HEAVEN BROTHER PLAY ON!!
fran 11/18/2000
I continue to think what a great loss to music today.
init9859om 08/18/2000
one of the very few white guys who could actually sing the blues, wrote them, felt them, and sang the hell out of em...
bara2389et 12/20/1999
Way too young to die and leave us wondering what he would have become, he still left us with a clear and transcendent legacy.
LOST501OM 10/29/1999
Best damn player to ever rip the chords up
PORS477OM 10/28/1999
