I can say she is the brightest, shining star in the world of country music. Her artwork deserve a gold medal if not appreciation. Welldone Dolly and keep up.

Dolly Parton is a true legend in country music, and while she hasn't had any major hits in a while, she is still recording, and she still makes a lot of appearances. I'm somewhat undecided in how many stars to give, as she seems like a five star as far as talent goes, but for some reason I have a hard time listening to more than two or three Dolly songs in a row, so I guess I'll give her four stars.

You have to accord Dolly a lot of respect as shes been in the game for a long time and scores high in this genre for a variety of reasons: first, is her longevity, as shes been writing & performing music now for over 40 years and has acquired a canon of significant artistic heft. And while clearly past her music-making prime, the quality of her output has at least remained steady over the last twenty years or so. Further, while considered a pop artist in some circles, she has maintained her artistic honesty, in that, she hasnt given in to the lowest-common pop denominators and has remained faithful (for the most part) to that Smokey Mountain-style of hers: a style which is rooted in East Tennessee folklore (a superior form of country music, in my view, that uses a narrative-style of lyricism). Her voice can be fatiguing at times but when she hit the mark, there were few in country music that could match her when she was in her prime. Best work was done in the late- 60s and throughout the 70s with stuff like, Coat of Many Colors, Put it off until Tomorrow, Jolene etc., and of course, her paean to lost love with I Will Always Love You (which was kicked, stabbed, shot, blown-up and left-for-dead by Whitney Houston in her ill-advised remake some twenty-years later). Also, her philanthropic work in the areas of literacy, conservation and AIDS prevention & research, (while not germane to my rating) are duly-noted and speak well of her character.

A great talent. Good songwriter, better guitar player than what she's given credit for and a very distinguishable voice. Her songs can paint a picture.
trebon1038 06/22/2006
I don't like all her songs but I sure appriciate who she is and where she comes from. She is tallented and never forgets her roots.

Dolly Parton is an American icon. She can and does do it all. She took country music to the masses. I think her voice is even stronger today. A brilliant woman in every way. I think she makes her fans feel they know her personally. It's hard to find anyone who doesn't like her. I just wish she got more attention for her amazing talent, than her persona. It's shameful that radio thinks she's too old to play, because she hasn't even peaked yet.

I have rated Dolly five stars cause she definately has the whole package - looks, talent and personality!!! She is absolutely amazing!
GenghisTheHun 08/15/2005
Where would Country be today without Dolly?
BBinfen 08/12/2005
She has written a lot of great songs. I liked her better before she underwent all the plastic surgery. I don't think she is attractive anymore.
neverenough08 07/16/2005
dolly is one of those people that without her we wouldn't be where we are today in country music. but on the other hand its her personality that gets all the credit. i think she writes good songs and has a great personality but she shouldn't sing as far as im concerned at least not today. maybe back when she was ok but not today.
adc103051 05/19/2005
She's as phoney as a three dollar bill, Well maybe not her boobs but everything else is. I have always wondered what she would really look like without the wigs and makeup. Scary.
kattwoman 04/07/2005
i have loved dolly since i was a kid. i will always love you has always been one of my all time favorites.
Chalky 01/23/2005
the thing i like about dolly is that she pens most of her own songs, which gives her extreme credibility and sets her apart from a lot of other singers.
dickmac 12/23/2004
It's nice that an old, long-time liberal like Dolly Parton has not yet been banished by the True Believers and the religious whackos controlling the media.
LadyShark4534 06/15/2004
Probably the only country singer I like. Also the most beautiful one out there. She makes the Dixie Chicks look like monkeys!
coleslough 05/26/2004
just want to get lost in her chest
Dirty Harry 05/01/2004
Another one of the great original country stars. I'd take her any day over these country hunks or tarts that Nashville wants to shove down our throats. Dolly has a wonderful voice and is truly a country/pop icon.
AndrewScott 04/11/2004
I love everything about her. Especially her #1 hit from the 80's Islands In the Stream. Legend has it that she wrote that one while reclining in the bathtub and looking at herself.

Dolly is fantastic. She writes great songs and is a wonderful singer. She also is incredibly beautiful. What a magnificent body and what a beautiful face! Also a fine and underrated actress. She also is a great humanitarian and a very class, kind person. In an age in which stars only care about themselves and are so obnoxious, it's good to see a caring and sincerely benevolent individual. She is what a star should be!
Dawnsdinos 03/09/2004
She's had some really good stuff over the years. Seems to have a really good personality.
DPs#1Fan 06/21/2003
Dolly is the greatest person to ever grace the Earth! I absolutely love her! There's nothing that she can't do. She can sing, write songs, compose songs, act, write movies, found charities/foundations, write books, produce, entertain, etc. She has her own theme park, Dollywood; her own water park, Dolly's Splash Country; four dinner theaters - Dixie Stampede. Dolly is a member of the Country Music Hall of Fame, Songwriter's Hall of Fame, and many more Hall of Fames. She also has her own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Dolly has won 7 Grammys and has had 44 nominations. She has been nominated for Golden Globes, Emmys, and even Oscars! Her voice is an angels. She is an angel! Her music is beautiful and so is she. There's absolutely nothing that she can not do, and that she is not the best at! Dolly is a legend and a world treasure!

Is no where given the credit for the talent that she is a great writter and sing. And a voice of an Angel.
leroyneiman 05/08/2003
I love her last 3 Bluegrass albums. Her less heard material is much better than her commercial work. Dollywood is fantastic too!
SM16 04/30/2003
She's helped shape country music into what it is today. She set the standard and paved the way while being a very genuine person. The reason I give her 3 is because I don't care for her music, personally, but she has done a lot for the business!
klytie 04/03/2003
She is THE best!
greekamerican 04/02/2003
What would country music be without Dolly Parton? I would never know. Would country music even exist? She definitely set the standards and influenced many musicians to become country singers. Her songwriting is great, she plays country instruments and her voice is very lilting and soft! Gotta love it. Dolly Parton is a singer's singer, and a living music legend.
mikeholly93 02/05/2003
one ugly country brat! her voice sucks!
Bryonb74 01/22/2003
Dolly has brought more people over to country music than probably anybody else. Plus she writes most of her own songs. A true talent.
buttrfly88 01/20/2003
Dolly Parton is a classic and a legend. She can sing, play guitar, act, write, entertain, etc. She has done it all. She is one of a kind.
Burntisland 12/30/2002
What a doll and probably the best female American songwriter in history.
lukskywlkr. 11/14/2002
Not only the singer of too many classics to mention, she also wrote hits for other legends. Merle Haggard had two huge hits with Dolly's songs "Kentucky Gambler" and "In the Good Old Days When Times Were Bad". Even Elvis Presley wanted to record some of her songs including "Coat of Many Colors", but she turned him down!!!! Elvis wouldn't record the songs unless she sold him all the publishing rights, and she gave him a flat NO. Now that takes guts.
Dolliac 03/19/2002
Dolly Parton is by far my favorite musician. She has become a mega superstar, but seems to keep her back-woodsy up bringing close to her heart. There is nothing to dislike; beauty, brains, talent, great ability to market herself and products, and wonderful voice! Grant
CastleBee 01/04/2002
She seems like a nice person, apparently can write a certain type of song very well - but that VOICE! I won't say it's hideous really, just very twangy and slightly nasal. As to her acting - what she lacks in range she makes up for in personality. She was born to either exclusively write songs or just dabble around successfully - as she's been doing.
MedgarEvers 09/17/2001
An excellent voice. Her version of Guthrie's "Deportee" is a gem. She can sound light and soothing with a slight vibrato and the same voice can have so much drama and character behind it. A really nice set of..... um..... vocal cords.
callmetootie 04/08/2001
Dolly Parton has a beautiful voice, and she's also a great actor. 9 to 5 is my favorite song by her, and I can always listen to it, it just makes you move, and you can listen to it over and over again.
Drap9458et 08/07/2000
I will always love her!( I'm really good with these puns) this girl just might be crazier than all three of the dizie chicks. but she too has kept the tradition alive and she never forgets where she came from may god continue to bless her
erik3962et 02/06/2000
A wonderful singer and entertainer. She and Kenny Rogers put on some great shows! Her acting isn't bad either!
rick3908om 02/04/2000
SHE'S DONE AS MUCH FOR THE BUSINESS OF COUNTRY MUSIC AS ANYONE ELSE ALIVE.SHE ISN'T AFRAID TO KNOCK DOWN DOORS.
Ruby 11/11/1999
Dolly rules! "Jolene" especially. I cant believe there's people in the world that like Whitney's version of "I Will Always Love You" better than Dolly's. Whitney is like a gynamist finishing a vocal exercise saying "I nailed it!" Dolly's is rich with sadness, regret and unquenchable affection.
john430et 11/07/1999
I didn't even know she was a singer, though I love 'dollyland,' or whatever the hell it's called.
