LEGEND! one the greatest musicians of all time
leftfinger 07/21/2006
I think this guy set the standard for country music. His tunes had the country twang but had a rock n' roll attitude about them.

I credit Hank with getting me into country music. I first heard him on a juke box in a hole-in-the-wall bar and I was instantly hooked. People point to his "below average voice", but Hank still manages to make people say 'wow' 50 years after he died (as TLMiller aptly points out), and isn't that what's important? I personally don't think country would even resemble country without Hank's influence. His music will never get old.
twansalem 04/18/2006
One of the best country artists of all time, definitely one of the top five.
TLMiller 12/11/2005
Anytime you can listen to music made over 52 years ago, and causes a person to say wow, speaks for itself.

Simply the greatest.

Theres only one Hank Williams, friends. There is also Bocephus, aka Hank Williams ,Jr. ...but there is no such individual as Hank Williams,Sr. If you say Hank Williams, I know who you are talking about, because theres only 1, and he's the greatest of them all. I was hesitant to add a comment under the title of Hank Williams,Sr., because it is a pet peeve of mine. No disrespect to Junior, of who I am a casual fan only. But he would be the first to tell you, as he so poignantly stated in his song Standing in the Shadows: There'll never be a another Hank Williams, friends.

Randyman 10/27/2004
The absolute King of Country & Western, Honky Tonk, Saloon singing, whatever. This man is to country, what Elvis is to rock.
fierce_pajamas 09/13/2004
Hank Williams was one of the first true musical artists.
LadyShark4534 06/15/2004
My grandmother listens to him all day. I have to listen to Poor Old Hank crooning Hooooooooooooonky Tonk BLUES!
musicman539 12/10/2003
Hankis one of the greatest all time country music singers. It is because of his works that country music is so well received today.
tvtator 11/05/2003
This guy should be much higher on the list. He's one of the all time greats. He epitomizes country music next to Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, Waylon Jennings, Merle Haggard and George Jones. His "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" is one of the greatest country songs and one of the greatest songs every written. When Hank sang it you could feel the emotion. He was only around a short time, but his impact and influence was wide spread.

Hey, after 50 years no one even comes close the Hank Williams Sr. Popular music in the Western world as we know today, can be traced back to the Williams art and legend.
Moosekarloff 08/18/2003
Perhaps the greatest songwriter country and western has ever seen. His relentless output of finely crafted songs in such a short period of time is astounding: dozens of standards came off his pen. A very fine singer, as well, who defined the postwar C&W style more than anyone else. Why this guy is not #1 on the list, and douchewads like George Strait are ranked higher indicates quite clearly that many users of this site have taste that ends in their mouths.
the transgressors 06/10/2003
So good he brought country out the woods forever, but never got too far from the roots.
getback 05/09/2003
One pof the Music's greats. He belongs with the Beatles,Bethoven,Gerswin.A true legend.
cordzk 04/30/2003
Hank Sr. IS country music. #1 folk, come on!
TritonAgain 04/08/2003
No greater figure in music, and worth all the praise. (I just wish his bonehead son would fall off another cliff.)
MedgarEvers 02/11/2003
As old-timey and depressing as it may sound at times, I've grown to enjoy it. Hank is truly the king of country/western. Get a load of the slide guitars in his songs! Anybody who's interested in becoming a fan, get "Move it on Over" and I'm sure you'll recognize and love it.
Hektor007 01/31/2003
To call Hank Williams Sr anything less that 5 stars is a catastrophe. I am not a country music fan, but this man is a genius. He is one of the very few songwriters in the same pedastel as Dylan, Guthrie, and Springsteen. Plus, Hank was rock and roll before there was a rock and roll. Move it On Over proves that. If only he hadn't created the rock star death in the process...
lukskywlkr. 12/26/2002
Definitely an influence on many artists, and had quite a few classics to his credit. I just don't care to listen to that high, nasally voice for very long.
oldcrowx 12/13/2002
if you don't like hank williams...
Jason1972 12/03/2002
I can't believe this guy is so low on the list. His music is timeless and sounds good even today.
Johnny Roulette 01/04/2001
This list would be a joke without Hank Sr. at the top. Most of these people wouldn't have a job if it hadn't been for Hank's deserved popularity with non country fans.
init10288om 09/02/2000
Patsy will always be Queen and this great man will always be King !!
Drap9458et 08/07/2000
he has got to find better songs and he has got to develop a better voice

Just put together a 90 min tape of the best from my Hank CD box, and it was sooo tough to cut it down to 90 min! My personal fave is "Why Should We Try Anymore." One song I don't have but am looking for (need I buy the bigger box?) is "Please Don't Let Me Love You" which I only know from a great cover by the English band, the Mekons...
