It was often said of Johnny Cash that no matter where he went, he was always the coolest man in the room. Cash travelled his own road throughout his career, and along the way gave recognition to artists who needed a boost, like country greats Rodney Crowell and Marty Stewart, as well as hosting Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, and Eric Clapton on his TV show. But his legacy will always be the bluesiest collection of country classics since Hank Williams. And each of his hits stand the test of time like no other country artist of any era. His simple and honest music crossed the boundries of country, folk, blues, pop and rock without ever pandering to demands of the music business.

Johnny Cash truly is one of the greatest of all time. His list of great songs just goes on and on. However, I am somewhat perplexed with the recent influx of Johnny Cash bandwagon fans. I don't know how many times I've read comments like "Country music sucks, except Johnny Cash." A true Johnny Cash fan should be able to appreciate Hank Williams Sr., Waylon Jennings, George Jones, etc. It's like someone flipped a switch after he died that allowed Johnny Cash to be poplular in mainstream society, without affecting country music as a whole.

The Man in Black! Lots of people can appreciate his music. Even hopped up on meth this guy performed amazingly. I wonder how great he would have been not hindered by drugs

The King! The Emperor! The Boss! The everything else!

I starting listening to him in the mid-1950's. I attended his concerts and bought his records and now cd's. He was great--he was a part of America now gone.

I mourned his death.

Cash's guitar playing is badly over-rated by his fans. He was a good entertainer and lyricist. His voice was one of the most distinctive in any genre. He is beyond mimicry; no one can do Cash right.

If there is still any doubt out there as to how great Johnny Cash was, only look at his entire performing career. Cash still defies being defined to any one music genre, whether it is country, blues or rock. But in a nutshell, just look at old clips of Cash's earlier performances (playing 'Folsom Prison Blues' and 'Walk The Line') to his final, heartbreaking rendition of the original Nine Inch Nails song, 'Hurt' (which seems to serve as a summary of his legendary career, as well as his obituary). The Man in Black was indeed a legend!

Whenever people ask me who I'd most want to see live, whether or not they're still alive, I say Bob Marley and Johnny Cash. Very different musicians, I know, but similar in that they bring an energy and unique sound, the likes of which I doubt we'll ever be lucky enough to witness again.
