He used to be really funny in a great oddball sort of way. The bits he used to do with Rupert & the Hello Deli were great, and "Will it Float?" was a highlight. Now all he does is make nasty derogatory, and unfunny cracks about any politicians (or their families) who do not conform to his ultra-liberal views.

I always enjoyed his standup comedy before he became a talk show host. He is still funny in spots but his true talent was writing and performing his own material.

Hahahahahahah I LOVE David Letterman. I wish his show was on a little earlier :-)

In the late 70's early 80's when he was making the rounds as a stand-up and a frequent guest on The Tonight Show, I thought he was mildly amusing at best. As a TV host his bemused everyman point of view found a far better platform, giving a comical outlet to the type of reaction that you and I would have to the world of the famous and the imfamous.

conceited, crotchety old man

He's a very likeable guy,the reason I like him is because he doesn't pander for a laugh like that fathead Leno, I can't stand him, Letterman is the man.

David who?????, minus 0...

Not really a stand up, but I guess his monologue counts..

Still funny but not what he once was.

I have loved the David Letterman show since I was a child (I'm now 25). This man is so funny without really trying to be. His skits over the years were somewhat outlandish but well thought out and humourous. I'd watch him over Jay Leno also. Jay's a little pompous to me but Letterman is one of the most wonderfully humble comedians ever. Someone that can make fun of himself but still maintain his dignity is legendary. Although I haven't been watching him too much lately, I remember him during his prime, the 80's when I was a kid and boy did I laugh a lot. Stupid Pet Tricks, his self-defeating jokes, The Top 10 Countdown list. Hilarious...

no longer funny

He is getting old has lost it not funny anymore needs to retire.

He's the only one of those late-night guys I like! He's hilarious, quick-witted, intelligent, and, oh, such a first-class asshole, and I love him for it. All of those late-night people insult others, but the other ones all seem irritating and pompous and snotty when they do it. Not Dave, and I think this is for two principal reasons: A, he's an old guy, and this gives him the permission to be a cynical old curmudgeon. B, he insults himself almost as much as everyone else. I don't understand people who dislike him -- he has so much infinite charm for me. As for people who watch Leno, well, they're either really stupid or a bunch of masochists.

He's just not funny. Even Leno is funnier than him, but Conan blows 'em both outta the water.
kolby1973 09/12/2003
First, this guy really needs to do something with that gap in his teeth. Come on now, he has money for it I am sure. And 2nd, he isn't funny. And finally, there is a reason why Leno got the Johnnie Carson spot and not him. Even though Jay Leno sucks almost as bad. I never watch his show, and am not gonna start now.

The funniest guy ever on late night TV. There's no comparison between him and anyone else on today. Leno (a truly brilliant stand-up comic when that's all he did) now plays the chump nightly at 11:30 on NBC. Conan...please. Letterman's hero, Johnnie Carson doesn't hold a candle to Dave. I knocked a star off cause he's not as great as he used to be, but he's still that much better than anyone else.

As far as comedy goes, he is a quick-witted and funny guy. The writers for his show are terrible, and he lets them know it with his facial expressions. Sometimes he talks to much about nothing, especially when its a simple skit. For god's sake we get it!! You try to see if an object will float in a big tank! Jeez!
Moosekarloff 05/30/2003
You have to say one thing about this guy: he's been totally unfunny, cynical, and self-impressed for over a quarter of a century now.
Cosmo Renfro 11/14/2002
Even though Dave doesn't do anymore outrageous stuff he is still the king. He can afford to be lazy now because he has already proved that he is the funniest man on television today. Leno could learn a few things from him.
Mahattma 07/13/2001
Although he does not convey it in his monolouges, David Letterman is not only a comic legend but a master of his craft. He and Steve Allen paved the way for other comedian talk-show hosts. I once heard someone say of him this: "Without Dave there would be no Leno, there would be no Conan O'Brian there would be no Craig Kilborn, there would be no Jon Stewart.
Plumpbottom40 05/17/2001
Letterman is one of the most quick-witted people in that whole talk show scene. When I used to watch him, he would just amaze me at how he could say something so funny and sardonic without even thinking. And when the writers gave him something stupid and unfunny to say in the opening monologue, Letterman always frowned, paused, and kind of shook his head as if he was wondering how much the network is paying these useless people. Leno, on the other hand, has a very funny monologue, but he himself is not! Letterman IS what makes his show so hilarious and NBC should retitle the other one "Late Show with Jay Leno's Writers"!
Auldearn 05/16/2001
I FIND HIS SHOW TOO NOISY AND TOO SLOW.
CastleBee 05/15/2001
Letterman has the ability to completely crack me up. The closest I can come to telling you why is to say that he has a kind of Bugs Bunny wiseacre quality about him that I have always enjoyed. The kind of natural-born class-clown you pray will show up in your most boring class in high school. I can vaguely remember when he did the weather forecast back in the early '70's in Indianapolis. Let's just say he has always been very unique leaning toward the bizarre. This is definitely one guy who found his niche.

Boring, boring, boring, boring, boring. zzzzz. zzzzz.
dfay 12/15/2000
History proves it all, he's been on the air forever. He loves to screw with people and laugh at their reactions. Dude is just plain hilarious.
Dorohasgas 10/05/2000
Best on late night t.v.!!!!!
init9859om 08/18/2000
such a funny man but his bitterness is starting to overwhelm him... Take a slight chill !
Wiggum 10/27/1999
Nobody can say Letterman is edgy any more, but I'll watch him over Leno any day.
