 | HelloKittyHell (47) 07/15/2008 | Eddie Murphy hasn't been funny since the 80s. Now his shtick consist of bathroom gags and fatsuits.

 | edt4 (99) 04/02/2008 | The only stand-up I ever saw him do was his film "Raw", which came out in the late 80's. At the time, I had nothing against Murphy-- I didn't watch him a lot on SNL, but I had liked "48 Hours" and I thought "Beverly Hills Cop"-- while no great comedy classic-- was pleasantly entertaining. I happened to be in Salem, Massachusetts, at the time "Raw" came out and it was the only thing playing at the local cinema. I remember laughing a few times during the first 10 minutes. After that first 10 minutes, I didn't laugh once. Now, I'm not a prude or squeamish when it comes to language; Richard Pryor is one of my favorite comedians and he was never hesitant about using crude or obscene language in order to make a comedic point. The crux of the matter, for me, is that the material has to be funny on its own-- all the obscenities in the world aren't going to transform chicken shite into chicken salad, as they say. Murphy's stand-up...at least in that film...just wasn't funny, or particularly interesting. Murphy's not untalented, but he's extremely over-rated, in my opinion. I think he happened to be in the right place at the right time, appearing on SNL when it was at its unfunniest and creatively bleakest. Considering that, he shone like a beacon, and people began referring to him as some sort of comedic genius. The 30 or so years that have passed since then have proven conclusively that those folks were way, way off the mark.

 | CanadaSucks (45) 01/23/2008 | A breakout first album. . .but that second one wasn't nearly as funny and that was the end of Eddie as a serious stand-up act. . .

 | louiethe20th (74) 01/23/2008 | I could do without the very strong and pervasive language, but his stand-up has to be in the tops of all-time.

 | doobiesNhof (21) 04/02/2006 | Mr Robinson's Neighborhood and James Brown in the hot tub on SNL were hilarious. The first Beverly Hills Cop was good. his standup was funny but not as funny as Pryor.

 | Silver Eagle 252 (8) 04/01/2006 | Gotta agree with most of the previous comments in that his best work was SNL and stand up. Ok as an actor, but he's most on top of the game when he's on stage.

 | PlanetaryGear (52) 11/21/2005 | "Eddie Murphy Delirious" was a great stand-up debut by any measure. It was fresh, irreverant and offered up some very telling commentary of the weird decade that was, The 80's. His follow-up, "Raw" had it's moments, but wasn't nearly as funny or fresh as "Delirious". Eddies canon in the field of stand-up comedy is not great but his influence is immeasurable, and his talent was undeniable.

 | southparker9 (0) 04/19/2005 | Really good stand-up comedian. One of the funniest guys to ever grace the stage of Saturday Night Live. Movies have not been the best. He should be more selective with scripts.

 | uneek (0) 11/27/2004 | Ah the good ole days when Eddie Murphy was funny and not doing movies like Haunted Mansion and Daddy Dat Care. What a choke job on this guys once promising career? Anybody remember when he was a real actor in movies like Harlem Nights and Trading Places?

 | sfalconer (21) 11/01/2004 | Eddie should go back to standup as it is what he does best. If you have seen Delirious you can only agree. I have realtives who still talk about it when it was first shown on HBO many years ago. Eddie needs to let the acting go and go back to his roots.

 | frogger20190 (3) 09/17/2004 | Gooni Goo Goo!
His 4th of July cookout routine still cracks me up and I've seen it about 10 times. He had (note tense) this great ability to take seemingly true stories about his family and make them absolutely friggin hilarious. Sort of like an R rated version of Bill Cosby, who has the same talent.
Like Robin Williams, he dwells on the male anatomy too much, but his Delirious video is a keeper. Why is that not on DVD? (Raw, his other concert film, is less funny).

 | Indio70 (0) 04/29/2004 | Richard Pryor's comedic son & the greatest player to come off of the SNL set. However, if you are not familiar with his early work, you probably would not appreciate his talent. Eddie has three types of works: 1. The selfless, like Bowfinger 2. The arogant. Like Hey I'm Eddie Murphy (now laugh mutha f*@%*%) 3. The Big Paycheck: Hey I'm Eddie Murphy getting paid (I don't care if it's not funny -- got your $8.00 though). I think his work on SNL is his best, Bowfinger his best work in the last several years.

 | Nyro (0) 04/23/2004 | In my coutry wish is France, this guy as never been equaled, he is one of the most well in he's shoes funny black artist of all time.
True is acting performance were somehow desapointing for some of is public, do not forget that these things event have a root, therefore as a public we get to see the concequances of it... but is fondamental good work as produced repercution that are there to wipe all the negatives feed back that conglomerate and shareless of it's success dusty pocket critics are inflicting to this guy.
One veeeerry (dure et difficile) place to remaine in the world is a stage.. so when you got it veery right like this closely retired guy (is nearly finish) you keep it that way!!

 | Redoedo (39) 06/06/2003 | Both "RAW" and "Delirious" in the 80s were hilarious. His impressions of celebrities and other comedians, including Richard Pryor and Bill Cosby were hilarious. He's absolutely hilarious- its a shame that he doesn't seem to be able to recapture his comedic glory that he had during the 80s.

 | Moosekarloff (17) 06/03/2003 | Started off great on SNL, but had considerable help from the writing staff of the show. Did some remarkable work in his early films (especially Trading Places and Coming to America), but lost his way about 15 years ago. The only film of recent vintage that had anything going for it was The Nutty Professor, which was pretty good as far as remakes go. His standup act is adequate, and I think he's a scream when he portrays white people.

 | reeny (3) 06/23/2002 | Absolutely one of the greatest comedians of all time. He stole the show on SNL with his buckwheat, gumby and Mr.Robinson's skits. His one man shows Raw and Delirious were outstanding and he always delivers in his movies. It would be nice to see him do a stand up special again. His movies have diminished somewhat, but you can't count out his talent.

 | afterglow70 (0) 06/10/2001 | The best comedian of our time. He is truly hilarious and when he gets on stage, you can tell that he knows that he is there to make you laugh. There are good comedians out there now, but no one can touch Eddie. For someone like me who grew up watching him on SNL and all of the movies, he is a guru of Comedy!

 | faheymon (0) 03/30/2001 | Eddie Murphy is just great. No one does a better James Brown, Delirious is quite possibly one of the funniest movies ever. Coming to America, another great flick. Some of the naysayers claim that he has lost some of his touch, but this is an ignorant opinion. Yes, you are ignorant if you disagree with me. That is correct.

 | CastleBee (81) 01/31/2001 | Who can forget "Kill My Landlord", "Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood", Gumby or Buckwheat? Unfortunately, things have apparently gone downhill for him since those days. He's a natural comedian though so I really have hopes he'll pull it together and do something great again.

 | jasonjt (0) 12/17/2000 | I love Eddie Murphy. Watching his stand up videos, Raw and Delirious, is great fun. My friends all get together when we need a good laugh, and watch his performances. He does great impersonations, original comedy, and talks about real world situations. Eddie Murphy is also the star of Beverly Hill Cop and others, great comedies which I own.

 | lthomas (0) 12/16/2000 | He is so talented. He went from Saturday Night Live to making his own movies and starring in them. My favorite movie was Coming to America- that's his best movie. He was especially funny in that movie. I go and see all of Eddie's movies.

 | Boricna (0) 11/22/2000 | I like the variety of comedy he has to offer and how flexible he is. From Sherman Klump to the Grandma in Nutty Professor Two. His laugh from the Beverly Hills Cop series shouldn't have been dropped, very entertaining, but I guess he didn't want to be known for just that laugh. His Raw video was one of the funniest videos that I've ever seen, it was just like the title, very raw.

 | PoorOldEdgarDerby (4) 03/30/2000 | I gotta admit Eddie Murphy does have his funny moments, I think the last one was in about 1984 or whenever that swath of movies - 48 hrs, Beverly Hills Cop, and Trading Places came out - ever since then he's lost his wit. I'm not saying he's the worst or that I don't enjoy some of his films but it's just not there anymore, they're just bits and pieces.

 | Munson (7) 03/02/2000 | His concerts from early in his career are some of the funniest ever. They were definitely pretty raw (as his last concert movie was called) and not for everyone, but my friends and I still laugh and repeat lines from "Delirius". Unfortunately, as he got older, he became much less funny and only recently regained some of his comic touch.
