john belushi was hilarious and his life was cut tragically short, sure he brought it on himself but i dont think that makes him any less of a comedian.

Overrated slob comic who destroyed himself and wasted his talent. He was well supported by SNL writers and co-stars during that period, and his role in Animal House was custom tailored for him, so big deal. Remember that he also made dogs like Neighbors and Continental Divide, and he was notably unfunny in each of those. Had he lived longer, he might have established himself as one of the greats (though I doubt it: his talents were limited and as such, would have been prone to relentless typecasting), but he liked the Red Devil and Peruvian Marching Powder too much to have any staying power.

Too bad he wasn't as good at life as he was at comedy! He was a living symbol of the era... EXCESS.

Although better than his brother Jim, his only true highlights for his career were from SNL.

Anyone that has died of an overdose or has used drugs, does not belong in the public eye to influence our younger generation. He was a funny actor but blew it as a human being.

I can only echo what the other fine people here have said. Belushi was brilliant and soooo very, very funny. His performance in 'Animal House' had me in stitches, especially the canteen scene. it is such a shame that his life was cut short. R.I.P John.

First off, I loved Animal House. Just wanted to get that out of the way. John was a great comic with killer impression of Joe Cocker. Many believe that comedy is tragedy, Belushi was the perfect example of this.

Nineteen years after his death, he is still hilarious in reruns of skits from the original SNL and now classic movies like "Animal House" and the "Blues Brothers". He had a unique blend of physical and maniacal humor which gave the characters he portrayed an air of insane confidence (i.e., Jake Blues, Bluto Blutarsky). Sadly we were only beginning to see his potential with more serious roles (such as Ernie Souchak in "Continental Divide" - 1981) just a year before his untimely, drug-induced death.
