The undisputed Queen of comedy. But she wasn't a stand up comidienne. Despite that I won't give her less than five.

anyone who rates above a 1 is an idiot, on the basis that lucy was not a standup. great show, but why are some of these people even on this list? lucy rocks, but not a standup.

She was downright funny in I Love Lucy. Im not sure if she ever did anything else besides her show, but her show lasted a long time and was a success. I love the I Love Lucy marathons, which offer hours of comedy. One of the funniest aspects of Lucy was her extremely annoying voice; my neighbor has the exact same one!

Loud, shrill and obnoxious. She practiced old fashioned comedy in the 1950s and 1960s that now seems totally antique. There's something broad and vulgar about her. A pushy wouldbe scene stealer who always seemed to be on the verge of flopsweat. As a result, she usually did not have very good interplay and chemistry with other actors. And she's another one who stayed too long at the fair: instead of gracefully retiring, she insisted on continuing to annoy the public until she got positively geriatric and her audience tired of her. There was absolutely nothing innovative about her comedy, no redeeming social value, just a lot of lurching about in desperate attempts to get cheap laughs.

I have much enjoyed watching Lucille Ball in her Tv series but we have to get realistic here. She never once did Stand Up, therfore you can not rate her in this area. If you disagree with my post send your argument to me via private message and I'll consider your opinion and change my rating.

See my comments on Lucille Ball in the Classic Actresses section.

Lucy was the best actress in the 50's and 70's. Her television career is like no other, and there was no stopping her.

She didn't do stand up, but since she's on this list, she deserves to be number 1!

She was a genius and a truly liberated woman way before her time.

One of the funniest people in the history of comedy. Her work in I Love Lucy is timeless and still loved today, more than 50 years later.

Whether Lucille Ball was a comedian or a stand-up comedian, she IS A COMEDIANNE. Rateitall doesn't have its own category for comedians but instead, has stand-up comedians. How about the rest, how about those who didn't need to do stand-up comedy to prove that they can be funny? Lucille Ball is in a class of her own, one far better off than any stand-up comedian. The best characteristic about Lucille Ball is that she was a natural, whether she said something funny or not. She can never be compared to because other comedians have to try to be funny in order to get a good laugh. Lucille Ball doesn't need to try, she is a natural.

Throughout the century, from new comedians to old ones, no one has the ability to prove what true comedy is better than Lucille Ball. Although she was never a stand-up comedian, that shouldn't limit her from being included as a comedian. She was the first woman to introduce comedy and she will always be a tremendous role model to many comedians now. We have to realize how comedy all started and what is its true origin.....that origin began with LUCILLE BALL-QUEEN OF COMEDY.

Lucille Ball is NOT a stand up comedian. Having said that, her television comedy was funny the first time, less funny the second time, and decidedly stale the third. She went to the well once too often when she appeared in "Life With Lucy". Nevertheless, she deserves credit for being one of television's first (but not necessarily best) comediennes.

As a TV comedian, Lucy reigns supreme. Too bad she wasn't nearly that good as a human being, but that seems to be a common failing among the paid-to-be-funny. VitaMeataVegaMin is one of the greatest TV sitcom sketches, ever. The magic of the first show, I Love Lucy, was never matched by her subsequent shows, which tells us that the other three- Desi, W. Frawley and V. Vance- were not carried by Lucy, great artist though she was.

She's the best of the best. her show was the greatest ever! it holds up really well, even now it's funny. It's incredible! No one has the star quality that lucy has. Everyone can recall their favorite episodes. I love lucy is and should be a universal favorite.
ButterDuck 03/19/2001
I don't see the appeal here. "I Love Lucy" should have been called. "I Love An Unhappy Controlling Old Meglomaniac Bitch".

Lucille Ball was a rare gift that only comes once in lifetime if at all. No one is better than she. She is second to none. She set the standards which all other comedians (male or female) would be measured by. She is truely the comedy ledgend of the 20 century. Her brand of comidic talent is now studied at the top comedy/drama schools of the world. Her top rated shows will never leave the air. Her "I love Lucy" show has and continues to be the most popular show in television history.
CastleBee 02/01/2001
Whatever you may think of her comedy in comparison to today's anything goes humor, her work was ground breaking for female comedians. Her best vehicle by far was the "I Love Lucy" show. Once she and Desi were through, her comedy suffered. It may have been because 50's humor didn't carry over too well into the 60's or it may have been due to the lack of Desi's direction and ability to know what worked best for her. Either way, she hit her peak and then tumbled a bit. But she always remained a classic favorite.
isoldekh 11/24/2000
Her goofiness and slapstick always classic examples of good clean comedy. I Love Lucy is tremendously funny with its chaotic disaster romps. Too bad it doesn't air more.
cheymon 11/22/2000
She was the queen of comedy! I have much respect for her because most women didn't do what she did on television. Sitcoms were brand new and she made them popular. The show she did, I Love Lucy, was so well written and Lucy fought hard to get her husband on the show. I also admire her strength when times were tough for her.
Ruby 02/27/2000
Lucy remains a classic. Pretty great that she was doing her thing back in the pre-Friedan 1950s. Has there been a funny female comedian since??
SamIAm 02/26/2000
I can not understand why she is rated so poorly!? She is a comedic legend. Her humor and physical comedy are the basis of many of today's performers. Lucy is an icon, and she has a right to be. She NEVER failed to make us laugh!
