Like his stand up better than a lot of his movies. Or too be fair, I like his stand up better than his more recent movies.

I really liked him in " Trains ,Planes and Automobiles" Thought he was REALLY good in that. But as a stand-up, well...he was ok.
PCPeter774 08/06/2009
Way too silly to take seriously. Come on where's that sharp stand up comedian wit.
CanadaSucks 08/24/2008
Better in the movies than as an actual comedian. This isn't meant to slight him or his career- I just found too much of his stand-up act a little dated and stale.
Spike65 08/23/2008
Five stars for innovation and fearless enough to try anything for comedy. Four stars overall as his frantic persona wear me out. He has made some truly excellent movies but most of the more recent stuff is crappy remakes of films that didn't need to be remade.
BenCohen 08/01/2008
His style is unique and his delivery is genius. He also seems like a genuinely nice guy.
XAgent 02/26/2008
He's stuff is okay, his movies are better.
edt4 02/26/2008
He's undeniably talented, maybe even a genius, but for some reason, I've just never been able to warm up to this guy. He became wildly popular while I was still a teenager, and I found him excruciatingly annoying back then. Later, I saw more of his work on TV, and laughed. Occasionally, I laughed heartily...very occasionally. He's clever and witty and inventive, but I tend to think of him as I do Robin Williams-- often veering unsettlingly close to comedic brilliance, but it just doesn't work for me, for whatever reason. While I respect both men, I just don't find them all that funny. I console myself with the thought that humor is often subjective...I don't like to think that everybody else is "getting" something I'm missing.
angryjed 12/24/2007
his stuff is dated, but in the 70's he was great. Great banjo picker
FranksWildYear s 12/11/2007
When he hit the big-time as a stand-up he was fresh and weird and had an impact on comedy that was not unlike what Monty Python did for television. You see elements of his old stand-up style in a lot of places still today, the overtly serious pose of a well groomed guy in a white suit suddenly subverted by flights of strange whimsy and the outright weirdness. While he is still one of the wittiest men around (Especially when he shows up on Letterman), I don't see it in much of his film work. Hopefully one day he'll hit on a run of great latter day roles like Bill Murray.
jaywilton 12/04/2007
I saw him in Detroit at a folk club called the Raven's Gallery, which closed years ago.He was great-at one point he put balloons on his head and went outside and started yelling at cars.
fb61200893 11/04/2007
Poor stand up (he is American, after all), but good movie roles.
doobiesNhof 04/02/2006
I happen to like him a lot but he is one of those comedians that some people just don't like because of his silly antics. To each his own.
Silver Eagle 252 04/01/2006
Ok, so maybe being a "Wild and Crazy Guy" is not so funny anymore, but in the late 70's, there was nothing really intellectual going on anyway. Great comedian for his time. His acting is ok even though the movies he's been in have not always been the best, Pennies From Heaven being the worst.
perfectsona 04/13/2005
he's really funny. his comic timing and dialougue delivery is excellent. one of the finest
Several Licks 04/12/2005
Used to like him better but his comedy is too forced and unnatural!
ralph vincent 04/10/2005
ok, he's not as funny now as his old stand up was, but the early work is as good as anything any stand up has ever produced. the white suit routines are timeless classics. but sadly, yes, the movies are mostly terrible. oh well, you can't be great at everything.
chano66 04/02/2005
He tries hard, you must give him that.
tocwelsh 12/28/2004
Terrible, say no more!!!!.....
sfalconer 12/10/2004
One of the few standups who made the transition from stadiums and night clubs to a movie career. He has made some stinkers in his time but Steve is very funny and should also go back to Standup like Robin Williams has.
Rater04 06/29/2004
WAY OVERRATED, HAS LITTLE TALENT! ALMOST AS ANNOYING AS ROBIN WILLIAMS.
marcm9999 06/18/2004
Was once the best.
Working-Class_Hero 06/09/2004
He has some good pops sometimes .. but he still can do better .. like his face expressions though ..
CapAnson 04/30/2004
Good, but not a true master.
oceanspray 04/30/2004
A very dynamic and thought provoking comedian all wrapped up into one. Nothing beats his wit and spontaneity.
e-bone2 04/29/2004
I think he was one of the best comics ever. Mostly silly stuff. Then he left before things went south. The best of all, he never did any white guy/black guy crap.
Moosekarloff 01/08/2004
Isn't very funny. Never was. When I first became aware of this guy over 25 years ago I thought he was about as humorous as uncontrollable flatulence. I considered this Comedy for Retards. However, as there is no end to the depth of the mental retardism of the American popular culture market, the monogoloids continue to support the manic antics and plain stupid attempts at being funny of this guy. The only times he has been funny was way back in the SNL days when he was well supported by comic greats like D. Ackroyd and G. Radler. His movies, except Pennies From Heaven and Black Men Don't Wear Plaid have all sucked, to the point where he's doing remakes of old chestnuts like Father of the Bride and former piece of crap flops like Yours, Mine and Ours. Spare us already, Steve, and retire gracefully!!!

At least Steve Martin had a significant stand-up career as opposed to many of the others on this list; nevertheless, I never really cared for Martin's stand-up work with all the rabbit ears and stuff. (The King Tut song was pretty funny though.) However, anyone who is responsible for adding phrases to the common lexicon (ie I am...one wild and crazy guy! and Excu-u-use me!) cannot be completely discounted. Moving on to his movie career, it is certainly filled with equal amounts of hits and misses. The former including The Jerk, Little Shop Of Horrors, Planes, Trains And Automobiles, Parenthood, and Father Of The Bride. The misses (in my opinion) include The Three Amigos!, Bringing Down The House, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, and Bofinger (though the critics liked the last two). The bottom line is that Martin has matured to the point he is best suited for the straight man, deadpan humor and should stick with those roles. Steve Martin was born on August 14, 1945 in Waco, Texas.
raybo67 11/18/2003
Here is a very talented comedian who can't seem to pick out a good movie script for himself. His good movies are too few and far between.
comedyfreek 09/29/2003
hes really good fun...full of enthusiasm.. love him in father of the bride..he a good comedian..his movies are really funny...i love mixed nuts ...altogether hes had some pretty strong performances
Sharon3802 08/31/2003
Whether it be "The Jerk" or "Bringing Down the House", Steve Martin always gives a great performace.
kahfess 05/17/2003
Steve Martin is a wonderful comedian, actor and writer. His expressions, even when he is trying to be serious, leaves me wondering just what is about to pop out of his head. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve ever seen him in, whether comedy or drama.
getback 05/09/2003
LA Story has to be one of the best motion picture of all times. If he had done nothing else this would have been enough.
southernmissta te63 01/28/2003
NOT FUNNY
Cynical Sam 02/20/2002
Martin was an excellent stand up comedian, but his movie career leaves a lot to be desired. Every picture he's done since The Jerk have been hackneyed and unfunny.
stooge 08/13/2001
Steve Martin is not only a funny stand-up comic, a talented actor and brilliant comedy writer, he is also a darn good banjo player. We know he is smart, but his routines still convince us he is simple minded. He has the rare ability of dead-panning an absolutely terrible joke so well that it becomes funny. Not every comedian could do the "wild and crazy guy" stuff and make us laugh.
Mahattma 07/11/2001
An truly innovative comedian who forever changed the face of comedy. Steve Martin was once quoted as saying "I noticed how much anger there was in this industry. I said I'm going to get up there and I'm just going to be silly." But this is not all there is to Steve, he also puts a lot of thought into his act and everything else, for that matter. He recently wrote a book entitled "Shopgirl" which flopped because critics couldn't accept that he didn't have to always be "on" and write non-comedic stories.
Molfan 07/10/2001
I think I would give him about a 4.5. I have followed his career for a long time. I saw him in a concert in my home town waaaaayyyy back in the 1970s he was funny then, and I remember seeing him a lot as a return guest on saturday night live as the "wild and crazy guy" yet he is a good actor too. I loved his work in parenthood and All of me. He is quite versatile in his talents. He is even a good banjo player.Oh yeah, I liked him in the Jerk too.I think he is a talented guy.
CastleBee 03/30/2001
What little I caught of the Oscars the other night convinced me - I was wrong when I implied in an earlier rating that Steve had "lost his momentum" when it comes to standup. Nobody can do the self-confident, sappy nerd like this guy who, I'm pretty sure originated it in the first place. Forgive me Steve wherever you are. You should have been able to expect more support from someone who was laughing at you even before you did the Wild & Crazy Guy. Oh, and I still stand behind my earlier remark that he's evolved into a good actor with a great talent for writing.
cajunlife 02/08/2001
Original - original - original. A great funny writer, actor, and comedian. Love this wild and crazy guy!
jai7321 01/27/2001
Very funny, also a talented playwrite.
THOMASSNOT 12/15/2000
STEVE IS GREAT. NOW TO FIND ALL 4 OF HIS ALBUMS ON CD.
Stephanie M 12/14/2000
I really don't like his style. He is not funny at all. His comedy is old and stupid.
wesk10089om 08/24/2000
He was good in a lot of movies and I really enjoyed his work... Then I saw "The Out Of Towners" with him and Goldie Hawn... major disappointment. Where's the talent I saw in "Planes, Trains and Automobiles"??

what legends are made of.
Shroomwoman 06/08/2000
It's hard to believe that "a wild and crazy guy" like Steve Martin could also be an incredibly talented writer. From his humor pieces in "The New Yorker" to his comedy drama play, "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," Steve Martin has shown that he can write. "Picasso at the Lapin Agile," which was based on an imaginary meeting of Pablo Picasso and Albert Einstein, was a creative, highly entertaining production. I only wish Steve Martin had starred in it!

Please be more selective in your movie choices. Bowfinger was really bad!

Much more than just a wild-n-crazy guy

Hasn't made a good movie in awhile because he's been writing essays, plays and movies.
